  • Opinion: Best Quake 1 GL exe?

Okay I tried searching, and couldn't find any polls about which GL.exe everyone likes the best and for what reasons? I'm currently using Qrack to run malice addon which works pretty well (doesn't completely save all my configs right, but it works never the less). If anyone has suggestions, please post them and why...THANKS!

      glpro v3.50:
      http://www.quaketerminus.com/nqexes/glpro350.zip

While Baker's "fixed up" versions of glpro are steered twards making things more "newbie friendly", I found that all they did, at least for me, was create more problems. I remember practically begging for vertical sync. It wouldn't work even if I had vsync forced in the drivers. Personally I will keep using glpro 3.5 as I see no reason to use Baker's "fixed" versions.

So what about Qrack, Joe's and stuff like that? I've never heard of these you guys have mentioned... Also what (really) are the major diffs between these other versions Vs Qrack. I'm "new" to the GL versions so I have no clue.

        Thanks for posting!

It depends on user preference really. For those that like pretty graphics, Qrack is a great engine that supports lots of nice effects and still runs well on most computers with a dedicated video card.

I myself have an AMD Athlon64 x2 5200+ running at 2.73GHz, 2GB DDR2-533 and an XFX 8500GT flashed with a custom bios with much higher than normal clocks, but I still use glpro because it's simple.

That was added in 3.80 because you asked for it; 3.80 is in every way superior to 3.50 with no new bugs of any kind and the vsync works perfectly.

The higher numbers of the 3.70 series were labelled "beta" and as beta, they did have some problems (which is why I labelled them beta).

Back on topic, to v12v12 .... there isn't a "best" engine for many reasons too lengthy to really mention, but Qrack and DarkPlaces are very well liked for the graphical enhancements and FitzQuake is really well liked as a conservative engine.

(ProQuake is more of a kick someone's ass online engine, if you are playing single player the enhancements won't mean much to you).
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Qrack Def has all the eye-candy one could want! I'm a perfectionist, so I'm just trying to get a better gage of my options. Being that opinions are highly subjective, I figured I'd ask the community of experts

*I didn't see the above topics till a refresh, I see what you mean...* I haven't played online in so long, god I'll SUCK - lost all my alias scripting ablities and tricks! Currently I'm single playing Q1 and Malice (my fav addon atm, haven't seen too many other FULL mods) and I'm loving it!

On an off note... How come under my userCP it says I'm not subscribed to this thread? I started it! lol... I'd like to get emails about new posts (reason I didn't see yours and the others after the 3.5 post...)

I cannot run Qrack on full max with this old rig... the gfx card is fine.. the cpu bottle necks it (I suspect) No way a 7800GS+ at 464/1350 is cramping from Q1 + candy...(?) The old [email protected] just ain't top dawg no mo' hahah

glpro is what i use. On occasions I'll load up a pretty one but always end up using glpro. it's quake!

                      (Bakers likes glbot.exe me thinks.)

if u want an expert oppinion, use glpro if u want blazing and responsive performance in multiplayer.

if u are playing single player, any of the above mentioned engines are enjoyable as they enhance the original look of the game.

and tenebrae is unplayably slow and i would actually consider that the worst for both scenarious (mp and sp).

even if you had one excessively kick ass computer, tenebrae lacks a lot of new features new engines have like Qrack and Darkplaces.

QRACK fixes practically all z-fighting! has shiny effects and amazing decals!
Darkplaces has a powerful separate multi-player(up to 64 players!) and amazing lighting!
Joequake is just your average joe quake.
Proquake is definitely best for people who want the old school classic look, but with optimized features of course.
