  • Holy Crap. Quake!

After recently completing Quake (using cheats because the damn thing fucked up, i wont go into detail, its all in a thread i made a few days ago), I decided that not enough people talk about the single player and their all about Dark Places and Qrack blady blady fucking dar. I'm all for multiplayer but i also love the single player.

Anyways this thread, I'm hoping, is going to turn into a massive "Stradigy and Tips Guide" that will be writtin by you, for everyone else to see. You can talk about the monsters and best ways to defeat him but that wont go far because I'm a Quake and I know every weapon that is best used against any monster.

But anyways, this thread will be mostly about single player where you can give tips about the maps and even talk about your personal experiences with certain areas (it goes without saying these experiences can only be worth reading if they happen on Hard or Nightmare, i dont wanna hear about the time you couldnt get past a single Shambler on Normal like a girl).

I didnt see the Quake reference, but maybe I was looking to hard.

I think you should consider re-downloading (Steam purchase right?so you should be able to re-download,no?Check your PM's)

It's too bad after beating ep1 through ep4 it only restarted you at needing to beat ep1 2 and 3, again. Thats a bummer, I am thinking that im going to download quake for psp,and then make it full version.

thanks for the help but I didnt download Quake

i bought the original disc off Amazon with the manuel and big box (all in prestine condition). i then used DOSBox to make the exe file work on Windows XP.

also that link you gave me came up with that 404 error (page can not be found).

Concerning the PSP download site you gave us on Pee Ess Quake, i just want to know if they will work on my original fat psp. As much fun as Killzone: Liberation is, i'd love to take Quake on holiday with me for when I get back to my cabin and have a couple of hours before the evening starts.

          oh man dosbox...

          might i make a suggestion?

there has been a lot of work done to update quake..
even if you dont want the new textures (which i highly HIGHLY reccomend)

you can definately use a more stable engine, especially one you dont have to pair with dosbox.

its a simple procedure mayn.. just pick an engine, download it,
and drop in the id1 folder

          bam bingo done.

ALSO optionally (again, highly recommended) is to get yerself some textures,
rygels texture pack comes in a mini pak thats likely what you wanna get.

          happy quaking.

          engines:

          LordHavoc's DarkPlaces Quake Modification

          Fitzquake

          QRACK

          ProQuake

            i appreciate your help.

from past experience i know DOSBox is 'unstable'. it would regulary freeze on me when i'm playing Dark Forces but over the past 6 days i have been playing Quake, there hasnt been a single problem (apart from the cd music).

besides i have spent 26 buying the original cd's of Quake, Scourage Of Armagon and Dissolution Of Eternity so i'd prefer to use them with DOS than download some file from the internet (mindf! calls them half-ass anyway )

            thanks anyway.

err, perhaps somebody else can explain it better than i can...

the original quake engine, was rushed and has bugs, running it through dosbox doesnt help.

the fact that it was built for 16 bit windows (i think) and is being run on a 32 bit windows platform helps less.

these engines are rebuilt from the ground up specifically to run quake better.

better and in native 32 bit mode, meaning you dont need to use dosbox, which is a bit hackish.

its a cleaner meaner approach and is actually easier.

oh and the engine replacements...most assuredly are not half assed.

                Vores!!!! >>><<<<>>><<&l t;

Back to the topic at hand.

One of first encounters with a Vore (not counting the ones at the end of episode 2) was extreamly irritating. I think there was two and i used the last of my lightning gun or perforator ammo so i was stuck with the shotgun.

When ever i tried to go round the corner to shoot, she would attack and she was so close to the corner, no matter how fast i stepped back, the energy ball came around towards me so i ran to this room with pillars where i easily tricked the ball into hitting a pillar.

The Vore is the only enemy in the game where you have to take a shot then take cover before she even attacks. Even shamblers are fine because you can easily take cover before their powerful attack, but unless your super fast at putting a wall in between you and the Vore, your toast. Its made worse by the fact that the Vore's attack does over 25 damage and if you let her, she has a quick rate of fire.

If anyone visits my page, you'll see my favoirte monster is the Vore because i love their attack. If we could play as monsters on Multiplayer, i'd pick the Vore everytime. They also look sweet.

Howabout downloading WinQuake off the ID FTP site then? ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com

CD music (and it's bloody excellent CD music), better stability, more resolutions available, all the rest. You don't need to worry about it being "some file off the internet", it's straight from ID themselves.

Tip number one from me, and it's from the Quake manual: "stay alive and get out of wherever you are".

my favorite quote from the manuel is...

"Easy: This is meant for little kids and grandmas."

although id havent really taken them selves seriouse about this game since the whole book is full of sacarcasim. I chose to play Hard because they said they play Hard and Medium is for most people and i'm not most people.

I play the CD music off iTunes so i can play DOSQuake with music, thanks anyway for your help.

You can run faster than Voreballs.

Keep moving, kill the vore, then dodge around a corner to explode the whole string of voreballs following you.

Even better, collect some voreballs, then make them hit another monster.

                        :-P

I hate Vores- probably the nastiest things to fight- if I have the option, I ALWAYS use explosives on them- it's easier to bounce grenades around at them or catch them in a rocket blast than to spend the next 8 minutes shooting two nails at them per 10 seconds. Which is a pity, as fighting them always happens around corners.
If I were to redesign them, I would probably make their homing balls way faster but steer awkwardly so you can face them in the open and dodge- well, sort of.

Death Knights are another distinct monster to play against. Lots of mappers throw these guys around as a 'hard' substitute to an ordinary knight- except they're really not- just one of them takes a whole large box of nails to take down and can plug a hallway with his blast. I rather see them more as Quake's answer to Doom's Barons of Hell (although they're more on-par with Doom2 Hell Knights, they fit into the Baron's niche).
Although I've found an awesome trick is you can often jump over their magic volley.

How about the Tarbaby Spawns?? In my opinion they're just too fast- you either pop em before they get started or just shoot wildly and accept an explosion in your face. I actually preferred Q-Zone's blob monster- it's slow and weak, but it moves so erratically that facing a bunch of them is quite an experience- sadly the mapper decided there should only be two in the entire game .
