  • Something that should've happened

There should a Quake 1 remake with the idtech 5.

Id should temporarily rehire John Romero, Sandy Petersen, & American McGee and make a Quake Redux or something.

Because seriously, HD Quake monsters from Quake 4 & Doom 3 mods look nothing like the critters from Quake.
Shamblers tend to look like muscular or fat beasts (depending on mod)
instead of the cute fluffy ceatures from Quake.
Scrags & Vores are made to look like zombiefied freaks; seriously, those 'things' from the mods look nothing like the originals.

As long as they keep the monsters looking like the originals. Look at Doom 3 and Quake 4. If you took the new versions of the monsters back in time and showed them to people, they wouldn't know what they are. They look that different. I don't want cyborg knights or hybrid ogres. I don't want to see any of them missing either like the Arachnotron or the Pain Elemental.

Id should temporarily rehire John Romero
You're just as likely to see Gilmour and Waters reform a band and play Streisand covers.

lol i was drunk, but the satire was they had a big promotion and gave u free beer where you 1st bought Quake.
GibStamps is the parity to FoodStamps, means we are so poor that we have to scrape by to get a game going.

Doom 3 imho is just the static linear gameplay that quake1 had (sorry if this offends you) but 13+ years after the shock and awe of the technical aspects, Quake was just a search and destroy. The only reason ive remained in Quake is for the multiplayer aspects. There's no bot AI invented yet that can reproduce the experience, and then when/if it does when you say "AH HA! IN YOUR FACE" its just doesnt mean as much. remake Quake is fine, as long as you remake the gameplay as well. Would you want to watch a new Clint Eastwood movie at a higher frame rate/ new suit, boots and hat, only to watch him go from room to room shooting people, again and again until u see THE END ?!

                    I hope they don't remake Quake 1.

                    Here is why:

Quake was gangbusters in several categories:

                    1. Incredible moddability: the QuakeC and mapping systems, plus Quakeworld and the skinning

                    2. Great gameplay

                    3. Awesome sounds

                    4. Simplicity. For example, connect to a Quakeworld server and if you don't have the map even on dialup it was just a few minutes until you did have the map.

                    5. Quakeworld skins capability.

They can't remake Quake today. Game media is gigantic and involves a kabillion tga files rolled into a .pk3 so game content isn't modular like it is where Quake 1 a map has "everything you need." Imagine the download times for 100 MB map textures, it would be atrocious.

Furthermore, the QuakeC system and network protocol made everything automatically multi-platform and really easy to develop modified games (anything from CRMOD, CAX, RuneQuake to mods like Slide or single player things like Hipnotic or Zerstoerer).

And much of Quake's success was the SOUNDS. The sounds in Quake are never annoying to listen to and this sets Quake apart from virtually every game.

Therefore, if they remade Quake it would be a failure compared to original Quake.

If they are going to fail, they shouldn't try.

And besides, Quake 1 is great because it isn't all DRM-ed up to death, doesn't take 15 minutes to load a map, doesn't have 75 guns, doesn't have a plot, doesn't have "goals" except get the keycard.

No remake of Quake would ever work. At least at this time. Developers aren't wise enough to even recognize what made Quake special. They sure forgot when making the Quake and Doom sequels.

Quake was the result of "thinking outside the box" by Carmack/Romero and co. Today, it would be thinking inside the box to make a buck. No thanks!

Its a good idea, anythings possible with the right talent. Id like to see it called 'Classic Quake reloaded' or something similar. Keep everything original, but offer different clients and mods etc on the CD, and on the web. Other games ID made like Wolfenstien and ET withthe Q3 engine I think would be interesting if they supported original Quake.

Hmm, I think a remake could only consist of the exact same media just pushed into today's technology. As Cobalt mentioned.
Imagine Counterstrike:source vs Counterstrike 1.6 Why not real-time lighting, bumpmapped etc. but remake the texture set exact just larger definition, same sounds maybe at 44 instead of 11 etc. but this can be done via the community, though legally can we distribute it? Improved AI, i dont want to see the FIEND attacking a zombie for an hour while i sit and eat my lunch on E4M8

Why do you need this when there's Darkplaces, Tenebrae etc?

Personally, Quake's story line was mashedup.
At minimum, a new game would clear up the info a bit.

Say, do you guys know what the story line of Quake is?

In Q1 you see Strogg crates in the slipgate complex,
could it be that Quake is cahoots with the Strogg? The Strogg are giving them their old equiptment? (enforcer's lasers, ogre's grenades/chainsaw etc.)

but then why would Quake bring it's Strogg supply boxes into the complex?

could it be that the Slipgate facility is working with the Strogg and the forces of Quake are stealing their stuff?

but the Strogg hate humans and invade Earth so they wouldn't work together

Actually I think Quake was a result of quite a bit of luck.
I think because it was so rushed it came out raw.
Raw gameplay, raw visuals, everything was basic stripped down.
Like the difference between a cadillac and a chevy nova with its extra seats taken out.
Its had a big engine, and its made of awesome.
