  • Unreal vs. Quake

To me, Unreal is Quakes younger brother since are almost like twins from a certain point of view. But which is better? Obvously Unreal is about two years younger than Quake and techniqually is out classes Quake in every way from graphics to gameplay.

But which one do you prefer? You cant look at it from a techniqual aspect since Unreal would win. Think about how each game is the same...

They both have you treking across Alien words
They both throw many type of monsters from the weaklings to the near impossible death machines (Quake, Grunts. Unreal, Brutes) (Quake, Shamblers/Vores, Unreal, Skaarj)
They both offer a good range of weaponry, each of which has its uses against certain enemy.

Theres a few example to think about.

Anyways, state which game you prefer and explain why.

Unreal obiously looks better and has nicer features, but Quake gets my vote, its just fun. Unreal feels a bit slower then Quake.

Both games are awesome, both engines are awesome. Most new games are based off one or the others engine(somewhere down the line). Overall I'd give it to quake since its the community where I've had the most enjoyment.

There is no way I could put one of these games in front of the other. I'm involved in both the Unreal and Quake communities. Both communities have active projects in the works. Unreal has quite a few massive Single Player projects close to completion. Quake doesn't have a whole lot of maps being worked on these days, but people sure are pumping out the graphics/skins lately, which is awesome.

I actually don't play Unreal in the vanilla Unreal engine anymore, kind of like how I use Qrack for Quake. instead of a user made .exe file for Unreal however, I use Unreal Tournament with a mod called "Old Skool". This mod brings Unreal to UT99 with no differences, except a few nice additions like permanent decals and carcasses, as well as a score board for SP (oh, and you get to use the UT99 Opengl render). Most of the big projects being worked on are for the UT99 old skool mod.

This is basically like the Quakeone of Unreal sites. The upcoming map page shows pretty much all the major projects currently being worked on in the way of SP for Unreal.

Has anyone noticed how the trend to put down rival games from the same time as Quake has mostly ended? I mean, back in the day - people always had Unreal Vs. Quake Vs. Doom threads, but they usually ended with people bashing one game and saying the other was awesome. These days, people seem to better appreciate all older games. I know in my case, I tend to despise most modern games instead. I love all the older games.

What are you talking about? They are all the same game, unless you are talking about "Unreal Gold", which simply includes the "Return to Na Pali" expansion pack with Unreal, along with a fancy new menu. The RTNP expansion pack is a new Single Player campaign with something like 20 maps. If you are going to purchase Unreal, you may as well buy Unreal Gold.

It's only an added bonus if you happen to own Unreal Tournament, because you can simply drag the Unreal game content into the UT folder, run the old skool mod, and play the Unreal missions in UT. Like I said above, you get a few new additional features with the game if you do this, like a score board, telling you how many monsters of each type you killed.

If this isn't what you mean, then I don't know what you are talking about.

The original Unreal was one of those games that just left you in awe when you launched the game.

I can't really compare one to the other. Not any more than I can compare, say, Half-Life to Quake.

But if forced to pick one over the other -- but why should I? -- but I'd pick Quake.

But that's like picking apples over pears? Why pick?

I have never played Unreal. What is the multiplayer portion of the game like? Is it as popular as Quake's? Is it as competitive as Quake's?

                      @Lightning_Hunter: I think spooker was referring to Unreal, UT 2003, Unreal 2, UT 2004, UT3, ...

I agree that Unreal 1 looked great when it came out while Quake was all brown. I never got into the Unreal community though and I love Quake movement. Haven't really played Unreal in ages, only at a friend when we were drunk or something. Recently gave UT3 a try and didn't like it. Bought it for $15 but already deinstalled it. I wouldn'T say it's bad, just not my taste.

Comparing Quake 1 and Unreal 1, I'd say Quake for MP, Unreal for SP.

I quite enjoyed Unreal up to a point. For the time the graphics were utterly astonishing, and at least at the start of the game it was quite interesting. Unfortunately a lot of those interesting twists it had turned out to be (IMO) annoying novelties; stuff like 19 weapons each of which had 57 alternate fire modes rather quickly made me long for some purity and simplicity.

Also, and more seriously, the SP game seemed to lack any sense of progress. At least with the episodic nature of Q1 you got the feeling that you were getting somewhere, but Unreal just seemed to go on and on and on interminably, with too many "samey" levels. This is something that (again, IMO) Half Life (and Scourge of Armagon, incidentally) also suffered from.

This. I've been playing both Quake and UT-GOTY a lot lately and They're both great games. When I junior in high school I got 25 of the 30 people in my computer class; including the teacher, to play UT-GOTY when we were done with out work. Good Times . And then I got suspended for 4 days for it because of 'copyright' violations.

Unreal was a great game, but it didnt offer much in the way other than better graphics, except for its CTF portion. Facing Worlds CTF was absolutely the 2nd time I fell in love with capture the flag in a first person shooter. It filled a rather large void when Hating went down, because I couldnt tolerate trinicom at all.

I preferred launching incredible amounts of bouncing saw blades, that weapon was just plain groovy in tight corridors.
