  • Steam Powered?

Just a rant... but "Steam", in my humble opinion blows. They need an easier way of retrieving lost information... user names, passwords etc... I have counterstrike, CS Source, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and probably a few other "steam powered" games, oh yeah, half life, HL2, and yes I've lost user names, passwords, MANUALS that have the friggin key printed on them. I guess my main problem is that I have multiple Steam accounts and I get frustrated trying to get them to delete all but one of them. Oh yeah, and I've changed ISP's sense creating said steam account(s), so my email address(es) don't match any of their records. I guess these are self inflected wounds... but damn! Quake = connect 000.000.000:26000 that's so nice...
And in the future... I'll look for games that are associated with steam... and spend my fifty bucks somewhere else...

I agree, its one of the reasons why I never finished HL2e1 and HL2e2... dont feel like dealing with Steam's BS interface.

I haven't come across a service that won't let you change your password or email address. Maybe you shouldn't have made multiple Steam accounts with different passwords and email addresses. Try contacting Steam customer support and have them help you sort your problems out.

What's nonsensical about Steam? An online retailer for video games that generally has lower prices in general and ridiculous deals all the time, and doesn't require swapping discs out to play different games makes sense to me.

It's an online retailer. Why would you need a hard copy? You download the game from Steam's servers. If you really want a hard copy that bad, Steam has a backup function where it backs up your games into compressed image files, which can be burned on a CD, DVD, whatever. There's your hard copy.

Gamers shouldn't use Linux. Most game developers use Direct X, which Microsoft maintains an iron-tight grip on, so you'll never see Direct X being used outside of Windows, at least not without some funky emulation. In short, there's very little money to be made from the Linux market when it comes to video games, so it's not going to happen.

Not to slam Vivendi, but Steam has it's place: a very half-lifey everything wrapped up in an iron curtain kind of place. Quake belongs in the wild.

Mapping for Source is an absolute nightmare if you don't use WC / Hammer. HL2 and source mods and maps take forever to produce, and even when you put a **** ton of time and effort into a glorious looking map, people on Steam would rather play rockboxes that took 2 seconds to throw together. As a developer, it's like banging your head against a brick wall for years and getting nothing out of it except a ruptured brain.

Also, playing any game in Steam is an open invitation for every 13 year old CS playing, no skilled nub under the sun to call you a haxor ****** every time you kill him. Don't waste your time unless you're specifically playing HL. OZ DM is also still fun. Peace.

                      /end rant

Turn off VOIP. The in-game VOIP function is, for all intensive purposes, bad anyway, not to mention the 13 year olds. Aside from that, it's pretty easy to ignore text. Keep in mind that whiny 13 year olds who cry cheat are not exclusive to Steam. They can appear in games such as Quake, with names such as Scoffer.

Gamers shouldn't use Linux? Sorry, I'll have to call BS.

I've looked at Linux as a hobby, considering that most of us demand out-of-box functionality, and that just almost always never the case with store bought games with respects to linux support. Nearly all game manufacturers target their product being played on a Winblows system, regaurdless of hardware configurations. Wine, essentially,is just a windows enviroment from within a linux enviroment.

Lob it into the "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should..." category.

I think that is what the FOQ was trying to say,but it came out incorrectly.

If you usually buy the newest games when they come out, yeah - then Windows is better. Or an xbox.

If you settled on a couple favourite games to play or even mod, and most of your time goes into those, Linux might work fine. A combination Linux + console is also very viable.

Wine is a compatibility layer pretty much, and it runs a lot of stuff from L4D to WoW.
