  • Your favorite oldschool servers?

Anyone want some nostalgia? Post up your favorite servers from when you first started playing Quake. I'm curious if anyone played on any of the ones I was on.

    Here's my list:

quake.zebra.net <-- my first quake server
    quake.zebranet.net
    quake.fundy.net/org
    quake.1st.net
    quake.zip.net
    quake.ziptex.net
quake.argon.org <-- Runequake server I grew up on, always a favorite
    quake.widomaker.net
    quake.dread.net <-- ctf
quake.petronet.net <-- Headhunters server I also grew up on
    quake.intertex.net

There were others but these were the ones I can remember. Mostly played on these back when I was in the clans The Tremors (TT), Angels of Death (AoD), and Guardians of the Heavens (GotH). Back then it was really difficult to keep in touch with my clanmates since we just didn't think about having a forum or a website, so I lost contact with many of my friends that way.

You can also tell that I mostly played RQ and HH so I never really developed for CA, DM, and CTF like more of the 'pro' quakers.

So what were your favorite oldschool servers?

      quake.argon.org <-----

Back when RuneQuake was Artifact Quake RJS and it wasn't about spamming gas grenades and you had to find a hook. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with gas grenades or a grappling hook, but Artifact RJS was FFA deathmatch with runes providing some help and flavor and if you found a hook, that was a bonus.

You had to navigate the map, rocket jump for advantage if you were so lucky to get an RL and it was more deathmatch than an emphasis on finding runes.

And you had to earn your guns.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Mhmm, I remember it being called Artifact Quake. I even remember when some runes weren't even invented yet, like the spiky cloud of death, which appeared one day in the server and completely blew my mind. I believe the Rain rune was introduced there but was taken out later. I also remember death spots being more transparent and grey-ish, making them harder to see.

Yea, I was playing with you and BTA last night on the new DM server. First server I ever connected to was a co-op , cant remember the name. The co-op servers quickly faded out of existence shortly after. I stayed away from plain DM servers, and played on hating CTF alot, and also the Rum clan CTF server, which is still up. Probably my Fav was Pirahanna CTF, running the Pirahanna mods with alternate weapons on the keys...flame thrower, lava gun, pipe bombs, proximity mines.

First server I ever played on was X-Men's FvF server. Some of my favorite servers were FvF, Chuck's Slide server, Widomaker/Singed RQ, and rocket arena (forgot which server).

The administrator of quake.argon.org was Roderick Shertler. He was running Artifact RJS (his initials), a heavily modified version of Singe's Artifact Quake.

                  Reference: Artifact-RJS Quake

I even remember when some runes weren't even invented yet, like the spiky cloud of death, which appeared one day in the server and completely blew my mind.
Was actually a rune in the original Artifact Quake by Singe ( Artifact Quake see Rune #37 ). But the Rune was laggy as hell for dialup so the rune wasn't used online until maybe 2004 by Slot Zero.

I believe the Rain rune was introduced there but was taken out later. I also remember death spots being more transparent and grey-ish, making them harder to see.

Hah! Baker you know more about that server than I do, and I played it just about every day back then!

I also remember mtown and clanberries, though I don't remember playing CA all that much back then. I mostly remember RQ, HH, and DM in my early years.
