  • FOQ's commentary...

    5 years of going downhill.

I recall previous sites like TLTQ and Singed having what he have here, and more. True, this site is better structured for help and support in regards to quake, but in the last 5 years the community has boiled down to pretty much nothing but CA***s who sit around and argue for 20 minutes before ever playing. There's loads of internal strife left in this already very small and further withering community for god knows what reason... check out the CTF thread for examples.

5 years ago there were not any CA players or CTF players to argue.

max.essentrix.net (CA+) went offline in 2006 and Trinicom died in 2005.

Let alone any CTF tournaments, or CA tournaments.

No one asked you to read the posts from certain users, in any thread you will potentially have people who are going to stir up problems.. this is a worldwide internet phenomenon, it isn't exclusive to Quakeone forums only.

Seems someone doesn't handle criticism as well as he said he could.

GL reviving this community Baker; I wish you luck trying to bring new players to a community that abuses administrative power to cover up the truth about how shitty it is.

So your personal need to trash up a thread on how QuakeOne.com turned 5 years old today and want to complain about CTF players arguing is beyond the needs of all the other members of the community?

It was plain and simple negative trolling, you could have continued to post in this thread --- but continued to try to trash another thread.

[3 day forum vacation for FOQ for being a butthead and requiring administration time twice]

Btw ... FOQ I have no idea what your issues are? Are you still upset the FVF server was removed by mistake for a while because it looked like the server was down for 2-3 days? Or because last year a high-bandwidth RQuake server with a fat pipe was chosen to represent that mod in the server browser? I really can't tell what the source of your negativity is.

Consider how long Quake has been alive. We're in 2011 with console/PC/cellphone gaming at an all time high and yet this site has maintained a game created in 1995. The game would be long dead and the servers empty if it wasn't for the contributions of some of the people here.

Ban reduced to a 1 hour ban, but would it be too much to ask for your to not be a butthead and quit trying to Osama Bin Laden the 5th Anniversary of this site? You've long been one of the most valuable members of the Q1 community ...

Just because you are unhappy, certainly doesn't mean others aren't.

And this community is going to grow. This year, the frenzied pace of development is finally going to be translated into the kind of wins we have all been waiting for ages. If you do not know this or realize this, you've been living in a cave of your own personal choice.

Someone like you has been a valued member of the Quake community for 5 years should not have to be moderated and shouldn't be trashing community-oriented threads.

[Btw ... the TLTQ site over 3 years managed to get 99 members. In **3 years**. We had 113 members in the first week in March 2006. The Singed site had 36 members over 4 years. That's like comparing an insect to King Kong. It doesn't even make sense. I'm not disparaging the important community activity at those sites, but this site gets more traffic in a single day -- BEFORE NOON -- than either of those sites would get in 3-4 months.]

So, we've got 30 pages and counting of posts in the CTF tourney thread; some negative, some flames, some on-point, so what. I'd be just fine with 300 pages of the same thing because it would mean more people (who care about the game) are participating.

Maybe in strawberry shortcake's adventure-land forum, people are entirely civilized. But this is Quake, and the goal is to kill the other guy. I think it's clear that human ego, sometimes to amazing degrees, becomes involved in that.

For every year that passes, this game will continue to decrease in popularity. That's just the fact of life for anything. As technology gets better and games get more creative, older games will deteriorate, and the fan-base will eventually move on. I will admit this happened to me, as I stopped playing Quake for a few years and played games on my Xbox 360 instead.

In addition, people grow up. They upgrade their computers, misplace their Quake CD, or otherwise don't have the time to play the game anymore due to having an occupation and/or having a family to take care of. Again, fact of life.

To many, many people, this game is obsolete. It's 2011, and to have this continued dedication to a game that came out in 1996 is pretty tremendous on it's own. I'd consider that a blessing, FOQ. It may not be the former glory Quake had, but many of these players bought this game when it came out (or a few years later like in my case) and still play. 15 years of dedication, what more could you ask for?

It was a good run, and quite frankly, I don't see much more interest in a 15-year old game happening. I've almost graduated from college, I played this game in elementary school, and when it gets to the point where I have more important things to do than play this game, then I will move on for good.

As the old Quake saying goes, "Deal with it!"

I didn't even realize this thread existed. I assumed my comments were merely deleted and not moved elsewhere. I still don't agree with this, as we can't pretend that through 5 years nothing bad has happened and everything is great. This isn't fantasy land, there's lots of negativity here. You've got to see the good AND the bad. Sure, 5 years later and we're "still here" is great, but we've got lots of deep rooted problems that ain't going to be fixed by administrative controls. Ideally, Kimp should have ran off this community like water, but he stayed around, dug in and caused lots of shit. Never mind external troubles, we can't even get along with each other within the community, outside of troubles like Kimp.

Baker, as for your questions, no, I'm not upset about FvF being removed from the server list on the front page. I really wasn't upset in the first place, and now it's back. It's a done deal now. As for the Rquake server, yeah, I was upset when someone started up an Rquake server when mine already existed, then having my server removed from the list. Mono knows how that is, although his server wasn't removed... however, I haven't given this issue any thought for months now, so no, I don't care about that either. Hell, it's one less thing to keep after on my server box, I don't mind seeing someone else taking care of it.

I will be reminding you of this statement later in the year. If you are still around.

Chess is hundreds of years old, Monopoly is nearly 100 years old.

The difference between Quake and other games is that Quake is almost fully open-source.

The fact that this website will easily get 700,000 visitors this year is one shoe. The other shoe that is about to drop will be revealed later in the year.

As I said before, I wish you luck in that project. I'd love to see a resurgance in activity, but I remain pessimistic about that actually happening.

Don't know how much this will help, but I've been taking screenshots of Quake in Darkplaces using Steam, hoping to attract players who look at screenshots on my profile and think "hey that looks pretty cool!"...
