CRMOD -- aka perfected public server deathmatch -- is a very popular mod among old skoolers. And supposedly there are a great number of players that like vanilla deathmatch.
But you don't see any signs of that on the servers.
Why is that?
I always thought the answer was A, maybe with a little bit of D.
But then the other day on the United Kingdom server, GCHQ (gchq.quake1.net), I got to play some DM on UltraV against a European player.
That map is extremely fun. I'd love to do some more 1 on 1's on that map.
(There is a installer here for the dm.clanhdz.com maps - get them - aerowalk, fragtwn5, macarena, ztndm2, ztndm3, ztndm3q, trimp, ultrav, sofdm3, q1edge)
Btw ... the OFQSP servers are running MUCH better custom maps than the HDZ server, IMHO. The OFQSP servers are running some ELITE maps.

My answer ... B = same tired 6 DM maps that have been played to death for 10 years. And this makes little sense, the most skilled players (CA, CRMOD) are the types that know how to install maps.

Why is that?
A. Vanilla deathmatch is dull
B. Standard ID maps are boring for deathmatch and have been played to death and suck compared to maps like ultrav.
C. The present lack of a server where "everyone shows up."
D. The players that like deathmatch knows the maps too well and therefore anyone except the best get owned.

DM6 is "elite" for 1 on 1's, but the problem is that DM6 can be learned to almost a science where a veteran player can control the map without any hope of a competitor of even the slightest skill level difference having any chance of getting frags.
The other day, we decided to list quake.crmod.com just to list a CRMOD server. More or less what prompted this is that we noticed it is scanned by GameStatus.net.
But the weird thing about quake.crmod.com is that unlike dm.clanhdz.com, dm.clan-rum.org or the numerous OFQSP servers, quake.crmod.com has no custom maps running on it!
quake.crmod.com is an Essentrix server, meaning that most North American players get excellent ping to it. And I hope that maybe there is some way to get custom maps running on it, because otherwise I don't see why it would end up getting much play, barring a complete miracle.
