The Only Issue with the Pre-release I have is the Setup. It needs DosBox or another Dos emulator to even attempt to start, you need to know how to edit CPU allocation and (Optionally) how to set the program to Fullscreen Mode. After that, you should try launching the game.

To change yor current video mode, type in console or add this line to Quake's .cfg file, "vid_mode [Numbers 0-15]". Number 0 and 1 are both 320 x 200, but one allows slightly sharper pixels. Numbers 2-15 represent higher resolutions. The highest mode (15) is 1280 x 1024 pixels. Before you start a game, you should try each Video mode, and see which fits your screen best. Only small, 4:3 sized screens will have issues displaying certain resolutions. Other screens may simply stretch out the screen to fit your native resolution. Have Fun

Still Searching for the Quake Pre-Release Guys, nothing exists when it comes to a download, so I'm completely Dependent on You 'ers.
The question was what will happen to people who already own it,as in have it

I said nothing, which didnt equate "lets start distributing it cuz developers dont care". Consider this, its supposedly illegal and common knowledge that taking Rail Road Spikes is a no-no.

Same goes for pirating software, common knowledge says u know its illegal.. A pre-release, they never intended you to have it in 1995/1996, same for year 2012. Will you be prosecuted for having it?I Dont know, depends your luck I suppose.

Or Virtua OS, which would be much easier im sure. IDK, I never bother trying to play games this old anymore (lacking proper support in modern windows)

Found the gem, decompiled the progs, noticed that the rocket damage was at a fixed 120 points damage, initially caused 10points damage on impact then a radius of 120 points damage to any entity around. The final version had 100+(random(20) for rocket damage on contact, and a 120 point damage of radius, ignoring the player that got hit. Fun stuff! This was dated 6/11/1996, after the QTEST. Seems the also changed the shotgun multidamage code after this version.
Just noticed demo1 demo2 demo3 are not the same demos as the final release, and the exe version is June 10th 1996 just 12 days before the final release! OH MY!!
The more i play through this beta version the more i marvel at the things id software did in 12 days! minor tweaks in almost every map, theres not even the e2m2 sv_touchlinks bug! lol...
played the end map you cannot kill shub lol 12 days prior to release and the finale isnt even complete! Damn they must been hella stressed!!

I remember a Romero interview where he said that he eventually had to finish the game and release it by just putting it on the web. He said something to the extent of "American McGee had just vanished" or so, which would explain why the episode 3 maps are spotty just a few days before release.

Romero has probably contributed to more maps than officially bear his name.

Everybody ridicules him for saying stuff like "and then I fixed Quake up, and then I released Quake" but it might be true. From what he said in that interview, id Software was in disarray shortly before Quake was released.

Wow, that's some amazing stuff to happen only 12 days prior to release. I was expecting more like several weeks, or even months, prior to the final release.

Sounds like no one was actually playtesting what was being created, and then when the release was just over a week and half away, someone (Romero to the rescue?) finally said we need to actually test this shite, and upon playing the game realized that there was too much ?WTF? occuring. It makes sense.... and plays nicely into the "Well,it wasn't finished......" story. The real question is, did we REALLY miss out on anything of significance ? Is there anything differences besides subtle game mechanic changes / End map differences?

i saw on func msgboard some people talking about reworking the prerelease progs to work under modern engines, that would be a nice little novelty.

BUT i really wish that someone would hack this damn thing, i've always wanted to play arcade mode!
