    Deus Ex?
Deus Ex did have a decent story, if a bit ridiculous at times, but I'd hesitate to call Deus Ex a pure FPS. Particularly because, a lot of the time, shooting was optional.

Captain John "Soap" MacTavish , Modern Warfare. Excellent story!

All the "blah blah CoD games are simple wash/rinse/repeat" doesnt mean dick when talking about the first Modern Warfare.

That's basically saying the same thing in a different way though, isn't it?

I'm sure anything with a story can be broken down to the same level as "evil man enslaves his people"; i.e. you can often sum it up in a single sentence, but that doesn't mean it's easily compared to a porn flick.

Finally, not all gamers are the same. Some of us like story with our shooting; and not everybody likes the same stories.

        It's just not that simple.

        Half-Life 2's story was stupud.
More power to you, but opinions on such things can differ.

Woah there! He said that some people in the company were thinking of the possibility of doing it, but there's nothing definite yet. Read: ‘Quake 5′ Coming From iD Software? Maybe, Says John Carmack - don't be getting hopes up only to have them possibly disappointed, now.

The porn movie quote comes from 92-ish or thereabouts, and was as a rebuttal to Tom Hall's ambitious plans for the original Doom. It should hardly be considered relevant nowadays.

HAHA, yea, no reason to 'worry about them abandoning Quake' , they did that years ago with the introduction of Strogg/Stupid Robotic enemies/ETC.

The closest they have ever come to a "Tip of the Hat" was including RANGER in Quake3..

In my opinion, they should just hire their team of lawyers to legally be able to offer "The first true 3D FPS game" for free in some fashion. I really don't see how they would please ME, a true Q1 fan, with a sequel. I mean, Q2,Q3,Q4,ET:QW,all of these damn QUAKE GAMES that had shit all to do with the original Quake1, means you should expect the same in "Quake5". History is on my side of the debate....

Games with a story are among the most successful, e.g. Half-Life 2.

Carmack really pandered to the lowest possible denominator with that porn film comparison.
I don't think the real problems iD had with their recent games could really be applied to story elements but rather game design and/or marketing/advertising. E.g. Doom 3 indecision between being a horror game and an action oriented shooter, and people expecting Rage to be a Borderlands with decent graphics.

Sure, but the (infamous?) phrase can be applied to many genres, not only FPS.

That's like saying, "If I don't agree with something someone says, I just wait a few years and say 'that was a long time ago.'

Are you kidding me? Any quote can be taken out of context, and I don't believe this was - however - John Carmack said what he said, and he meant it.

But.... there are so many similarities...
David was a trash talker, so are you.

"I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth.

Then he backed up his words with action:

David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion dead, they fled."

Goliath is kill-able. The 'Bad-Taste' of society is not a stink we have to live with. We can make changes ourselves.

I'm surprised no one posted it here (or created a new topic) yet, but there's a few possible hints iD is starting to work on a new Quake based on the first one.
Things that probably have nothing to do with Quake 5 (Page 1) / News / Quaddicted.com Forum
I don't know how those sources are reliable or either if there's really something going on, but one can dream.

I think that this should be a community effort.
basically id_software just makes good engines, and bad games. so lets take the good and make it better.
