  • Quake/Quake Expansion

Fun stuff. This took me a while, but I encourage you all to do the same.

(On "Hard" difficulty) I've recently, consecutively, passed "Quake 1," then "Scourge of Armagon" then "Dissolution of Eternity". It gave me a lot of ideas for my project. Armagon was phenomenal, Dissolution felt like a bunch of nerds tried to make something 'cool.' It was a bit convoluted in my opinion, but still fun, I'll play it again.

Then I passed "Quake II," "The Reckoning" and "Ground Zero." Honestly... "Ground Zero" is amazing, and surprisingly long. I loved the guns that popped out of the walls, kept you on your toes.

I was shocked at how good Quake II & the expansion packs were; I'd always heard it was one of those games "that tried, but sucked," which is a huge discredit. Great games all.

I picked up a copy of "Enemy Territory: Quake Wars" but haven't played it yet. I was wondering if any of you had a copy, and what your thoughts were.

ET:QW imo quite sucks. i got it too cuz im a huge fan of quake and quake2&4 i love too, but when i tried ETQW i was hugely dissapointed

it has absolutely zero to do with q2&q4 except that it has the strogg in it, its a completely different kinda game. it feels to me like they just made a game and decided to pop in the strogg and marine characters just to make people get interest in it.

im love the strogg quake games too, but ETQW is bleh imo

are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <

Agreed, ETQW could have been so much better. Playable, but bleh. Not too many online servers anymore either....

ETQW is at Gamestop every time I go there, and I always have the thought of, "Should I finally buy this?" but after reading what splitterface posted, I feel that I will no longer have that thought. The Quake add-ons are great.. Quake 2 has something more though, try Quake II for the N64. It has completely new levels for the most part, and has a darker theme to it, I think it even had a few new enemies.

Thanks, but... I'm not into consoles, and I was never a fan of N64; if I absolutely had to play a N64 game, I'd port it to an emulator to play on the PC.

I'm familiar with the emulator, I know how to use it and numerous others. There's a reason I don't use it/them.

Console games, console controls, console fans, and to a point - console emulators - just not my thing anymore. Feel free.

                Hello,

Can someone (who played all Q2 packs) tell me if one of them also has fantasy amience/monsters ?
Or is Q2 strictly futuristic Strogg style with robotic monsters ?

                Thank you.

And they wonder why Q2 was not as popular as Q1...
I think that is one major reason why Q1 has such a big fan community.
The multiple worlds and ambience is much more important and fun to play than superior level design.
People with different tastes still like Q1 because it satisfies all.
If the levels always consists of the same type it can get boring quickly. Especially with the size limit of that time.

Doom with its hellish and futuristic levels and monster tapes has the same benefit as Q1: It variies.
That is the key I guess.

I liked the mash of cyborg monsters.

I never understood back in 1996 why they called it Quake instead of Doom3...
pretty much looked like doom at the time...

personally i could care less about the 666-themed medieval junk. I found it disjointed and hotchpotch, only the engine/online play was the interesting part.

Why would monsters in another dimension spray paint a pentagram on a door?
WTf does demonic creatures have to do with a slipgate technology?

If they would have used the marine/alien theme they could have been as big as HALO is now, back then...

time to make a quake2 prequel...

the one great thing about quake 1 is there is so many mods to play and it makes things interesting. and there are SO many engines for it. from graphical enhancement to multiplayer finanza. that is a great thing about quake 1 and even the series.
