My first modem was a 9600. I thought I was going big when I got a 14.4. Wow how times have changed.

I will find you... it's only a matter of time.

      Dialup

      Still on dialup for now...

      The pq_lag cmd muahahahaha

I remember 1v1ing a lpb and since alot of the netquake community thought I used a fake ping, I would ping + 200 my ping would then be around 400.

So they thought I was lpb with fake ping. By pinging +200 , even if i was lpb , with the +200 I was hpb either way.

      I won that match

maybe I'll share demos some day

      ^^

        dialup

i used dialup in quake from 96 to 99 i believe... most of us did. i had been using dialups in general since way before the 9600 baud modems.. back around when compu-serv and prodigy just beginning

dialup wasn't so bad either, some people were very good with the higher pings. phragz (unafragger) was so good with a 200+ ping that we used to play him in our lpb matches even over our regular lpbs..

I forgot about that class of players.

Even 3 or 4 years ago there were scores of power-HPBs all over the place. Of those that still play, most of them are on broadband now, of course.

A power-HPB was the most dangerous of all players.

They studied the map, the angles of grenade bounces, the timings of everything and had Quake down to a science to make up for their ping.

All I remember of Dial up days is being in different servers trying to find a good one with at least a stable ping and some Jamoch giving me the BSOD..

Until I Patched the damn thing. I was thrilled when my neighbor got a t line in and allowed me to run a cable from his basement to mine. I was thrilled to be able to fly instead of curse you all for your bottage!! In the mean time I kept hounding my village officials to get something.. ANYTHING.. in here other then dial up.. Weekly emails asking for updates seemed to do the trick and within 9 months.. In came AT & T. woohoo.. I had my own. Now.. I feel like dial up again.. lol. went to a laptop for my games. You all really need to stop botting ya know!!!

To be honest, event though I'm on Cable in the UK , I still get something similar this when playing on US servers in that although movement is usually okay there is often a delay between pressing fire and something actually happening on screen. During which time Monster has usually blasted me to pieces and danced around the remnants of my still twitching corpse. Still, the things we put up with for a game of quake eh?

              Kind regards

Years ago I remember asking spectre in mIRC if he considered me the best hpb, his response was unafragger (phragz)

That describes what I did Baker , and probaly many other hpb's. Cause I studied DM3 - A few fellow net-quakers noticed my labour in DM3 and typed : stop doing tricks :]

Must be similar to me calling out that way... There is always a second or two delay in phone conversations!!! I had to call my sister who was stationed in Cuba.. omg.. how annoying. Finally gave up and told her that we can converse via web cam or something where the delay woudln't be that noticable as we were jumping into each others conversation.

I tried playing quake online back in 1997 or so, but I found it un-playable. First of all I was on AOL and second of all I lived in Wyoming so I got pings near 1000 or so. Often time I would loose my conection to the server entirely. Even now that I have 3 megabit cable I only get ping rate in the 150-200 range though I do occasionaly get pings in the sub 100 range.

I know Brazilians and Europeans that get pings on US servers better than that ... that's terrible.

I played on DialUp,for awhile there while in clan [MFR] all of my DialUp ISP options when nutzoid with gay pings.

Normally I would ping 150/180 area, from VA to WA.

I was dialup for quite a long time too,I remember when downloading 5MB was incredibly long waits, and anything above 20MB was destined to fuck up before your download finished

I always used to be hpb until about january of this year I believe. I pinged 180 (on a good day) to 260. My ping was constantly spiking and was getting icons, but on the rare occasion that I wasn't lagging, I was t3h own4g3.

Sorry, pinging 180 to 260 is still lpb by my standards.
Try sub 33.6 connection, if you go under 500, it is a good fucking day for Quake then.

The thing is, you can adjust to ping, not packet loss.

As a commuter college student living at home, I'm stuck with the whims of my parents and one of those seems to be "sticking with dial-up" They know they reasonable broadband is as cheap as or cheaper than good dialup (which we have, thankfully) but they're afraid that if they switch over, I'll spend all my time downloading warez and playing online games... They're right too If the other 3 people who say they still play over dial-up come forward, maybe we can get together on a small map on a good server and play in an environment where we won't get owned by people simply because they have a better connection... Otherwise, I'm stuck observing and doing SP.
