Download: Halloween EZ Installer (0.9 MB)

Autobuilds GLPro shortcut to start Halloween

This is a short and fun Hallowwen-themed single player mod. It was released by IEEE 802.11 in 2003 for the TLTQ community, but not widely known or played at the time

/And two-thirds of the TLTQ players, myself included, barely knew where to put a map -- heh -- so most certainly wouldn't have been able to figure out a zip that required -game in the command line.

This mod has pumpkins sitting around everywhere on The Necropolis and a great in-game storyline plus a surprising "Boss" at the end of the map.

    The Story

While attempting to connect to a server, your connection gets hijacked and you find yourself in single player Quake, facing an old and long forgotten nemisis.

Who is this nemisis? You must play thru the level to find out.

You must kill all zombies in the map to meet the mysterious hijacker.

    The Mod

What is particularly impressive about this mod are the sounds. Halloween features all of the standard Rune Quake-style runes + grappling hook -- since IEEE 802.11 was the author of Rune Quake Plus.

Your movement speed is severely limited in the map, this is intentional to make it difficult. Travel by grappling hook is highly advised.

Having these aliases bound to keys is highly recommended: +hook, rune-use, rune-delete, rune-tell.

    Notes

Halloween works only with ProQuake, Qrack and JoeQuake due to QCCX'd QuakeC. The final boss is very unique, I would have preferred to post a screenshot of the boss -- but that would completely ruin it, so I didn't.

I'll add a link to a zip file in this thread, I did some tests and for some reason, possibly due to a coding mistake in QuakeC, a couple of files can't go in the actual gamedir, so the zip file folder setup is a little unusual.

          Added, zip version

The zip version is NOT for newbies, the folder layout is confusing and easy for an inexperienced computer user to mess up.

/I didn't make the mod and I couldn't get the gamedir to recognize one of the models and I doubt IEEE has the original source code [or the motivation if he does] to tweak something from 3 years ago. The EZ Installer works flawlessly and then you just click Start -> Programs -> Quake -> Halloween

And btw, as everyone can tell, I am extremely sympathetic to the needs of the less computer literate and novices in general. Quake has far too much to learn (configs, settings, command lines, quirks) .

Heh, funny mod! A shame it crashes on saving. Also the runes are flickering sometimes. I died just at the end.

I'll have to try this when I get a chance.

I will find you... it's only a matter of time.

I dont see how it wouldve been confusing to setup... I mean Im confused as to why he would put the mod in that state (hes got duplicate files, the only difference is one set is in caps in the name....), but it was obvious how to set it up really.

However this mod does on top of that receive some big wags of the finger - requiring JoeQuake/ProQuake/Qrack without any good reason, it would be one thing if it made use of features in these engines (Im not seeing evidence of such) but from the looks of it, its just due to dodgy qc or compiling... I can do without using Darkplaces, but if your mod doesnt do anything that requires a new engine, it should always work in winQuake/glQuake. Another big thing is the simple fact that you cant save - this makes absolutely no sense to me, and the mod shouldnt have been released with such a showstopper. Its not just a "you cant save", it is "the game crashes if you save so it is worse to try then to not save". I missed the warning for that in this thread, and thus lost all of my progress when I decided to save thinking "it took me a while to get here, I dont want to die and restart".

My next criticism is the simple fact that the handicap of player movement doesnt make it harder, it makes it less fun. True it is harder as well, but it wasnt a challenge, it was just annoying. Lower the players max health, make the monsters do more damage, give them quicker response times.... But arbitrarily slowing the player just isnt fun in any way. I know there is the grappling hook, but I dont think it makes up for the fact that you seriously dragass if you ever touch the ground.

Im gonna give this one more go, as I didnt reach the boss due to saving, but right now the only thing it has is the simple fun of runes in single player. Sorry IEEE, but some of the choices in this are just... silly.

Baker uses VB, therefor what's confusing to him may not be confusing to the rest of us :d

If you can mess with it in such a way as to make it not require the files in quake\id1\progs, let me know. I tried everything and wasn't able to make it work without the gamedir. That would make the zip simpler.

Halloween was a derivative IEEE made from his RQ+ server mod. There isn't any good reason [that I know of] for it to use QCCX'd stuff, but back in 2003 I don't think anyone was aware that it would not work in some engines.

I'd assume that it's the same issue as with RuneQuake; the QC compiler generates invalid code that tries to prey into the memory internals of the engine.

I've found that even when using the recommended engines (e.g. ProQuake), some of the mods behave unpredictably. One time, I tried to change the coop flag and the engine wrote a screenshot each time ...
