TeamFortress 2 Training

TF2 will see the dawn of a new class type: the instructor. Although this is not strictly the realm of this strategy guide I took the liberty of adding a few lines to this class as it opens up a whole new way of training.

The instructors first and foremost task is operational training. New recruits to the clan/team can be shown the ropes using the laserdot and the direct comlink.

This makes that the operational tempo of recruits can be increased and the recruit can be deployed in combat quite quickly.

In TF/TFC trainers were still very dependent on textual information, giving instructions and examples separately: first they explained the rocketjump, then they did the rocketjump, and then they watched their pupils fail horribly.

For troops in general it must be said that the only way to win is: training, training, and training. Every man should know what is expected of him at any given point in the battle. An instructor should take care to always keep the goal of instruction in mind.

1. The objective of the instructor is threefold:
- Operational Training: how does a recruit handle his weapons, how does he react to certain situations.
- Evaluational Training: New recruits can be evaluated on abilities.
- Correctional training: A recruit that makes regular mistakes can be followed and shown how to do certain things.

Operational Training:Operational training is that sort of training which has as its objective to increase the ability of other players. Players can be shown not only how to handle their weapons but also how to evaluate positions, how to find best suited spots for defensive and offensive actions, and much more. The operatonal training could take place in a practice match whereby one of the officers, or a specially appointed trainer (a veteran) looks over the shoulder of the trainee. Issues that should be dealt with are:- Dealing with ambushes- Hinderniss courses (run the gauntlet type)- Offensive and defensive position taking.- One-on-one battleFor this it would be best to develop maps with the separate issues in an increasing grade of difficulty.

Evaluational Training:In TF/TFC you basically evaluated new team members on their scores and subjective accounts from your teammembers on how they acted. Unfortuantely it has been known to excel in one match and to be completely out of the game in the next. Therefore this sort of evaluation was always doubtful to say the least. If the teamleader or recruiter takes the role of instructor and hitches a ride on one or more prospective recruits, these recruits could even give verbal explanation for their action. This would make recruiting new team members a completely new experience.

Correctional Training:New recruits and people unknown to TF2 will often bring their behaviour from Deathmatching into the game. Also the famous TF Attack through the center strategy will probably survive in some players before they start to appreciate TF2 to its fullest. To correct this, and other mistakes, a veteran could play a game with a recruit to determine what goes wrong and where. The instructor possibility will give the veteran a much closer and more direct insight into a players behaviour.

2. People excelling in instructorship should be encouraged to enahcne their knowledge and spread it. This could include a regular instruction game for every player, but it could also mean that you ask instructors from other clans (allies?) to have a look at your gameplay. This will not only enhance you, but also adapt you to different playing styles.

3. If instuctors start to roam from clan to clan it would be highly advisable to start up a guild for instructors, within which they bind themselves not to divulge any tactical or strategic information from the various clans to other clans. This would enhance the openess toward the instructor and would make good instructors valuable assets.

4. Commanders should always share their knowledge with their officers and troops. If they have found a new way to overcome the enemy in a map, the operatives must be shown this before going into actual battle. This can be wonderfully done through the instructor.
