2fort. Love it or hate it?

2Fort. It is only fitting that one of 2Fort5's staunchest supporters give his comments on the TFC make over of it. I love it of course. The forts have so much more character. Naturally with the many new and fresh looking textures availible from Half-Life, it only stands to reason that it would come out looking like a thing of beauty. It's like putting new soles on that old worn out, but comfortable, pair of your favorite shoes. Gone are the square ceilings and sharp edges. While the basic design and shape of the rooms all remain the same, the tastefull use of an extra brush here and there to give a smoother look is refreshing. I know many veterans have had their fill of 2fort5, and I assume this will be a continuing trend as the popularity of 2forts will be sure to gain momentum once again with the influx of new players.

A few things have changed, but nothing major. You can no longer shoot through the Grates, nor can you fall through them. It is a tighter grid, and the setting were made so as to not let weapons fire through it. The flag model is very nice looking, and when you are carrying the flag, it is now visible on your body like in Capture the flag. There is a message broadcast when you get the flag, and when the enemy takes your flag as well, so there is no chance of missing the message being displayed on your screen. The water way to the enemy base is much more detailed and a little harder to navigate. At the top of the spiral stairs up from the water way, they left a section with no railing so you can fire down into it.

Another feature I like a lot is that they have put mini turrets in the ceilings in the respawn areas. At this point, I have had very limited playing time but I am assuming they are to defend the area from respawn campers. (Makes sense doesn't it??) The map itself seems a bit more closed in as the Half-Life player model is 10% bigger. (I think) That would make the map seem 10% smaller if I am thinking right.

If I could point my finger at any part of the map I feel is lacking at all, it would be the main ramp room. It seemed a little plain in comparison to some of the other areas. Over all though, I am quite pleased and satisfied with what has been done to my favorite map! I have had a screen shot of it as my background on my desktop since the original shots were released a month or so ago.

So 2fort5 is going to be around a bit yet guys. Hopefully, they already have a 2fort5 type map in the works for TeamFortress 2! If not, just remember, I am now a map maker myself! Bahahahahahaa!!!

The entrance to the blue fort

The flag room, damn fine improvements here!
 The Well, A CTF Standard!

Take a look at the red Well base... slick eh?

The attic type room looks better then ever

The flag room, high tech. And the place of mucho bloodshed
.
Well. (The map) Yes, believe it or not, I actually have played maps other than 2forts! Once again, I feel The Well has had a marvelous make over. The floor plan is essentially unchanged. Being of the 2forts or 2bases concept the areas of conflict are well defined. The open area in between the forts, the entry, the ramps, the sniper loft and flag room all have the "Classic" feel of the standard battle grounds we are familiar with.

The only place I saw with a somewhat major design change was where the elevator used to go up to the roof. That is now a ladder and there is a flat platform from which to snipe from, or what ever your pleasure is! Also the sniper area inside the base is now more wide open, with no columns at either side of the center area that protects the elevator up to the attic. Actually the more I think about, there are quite a few design changes, but they have not changed the floor plan.

The main entry door into the bases now withdraws into the floor instead of opening to the sides. Its action is much quicker now as well. The Respawn rooms in this map have the gun turrets in the ceilings as well, and upon further testing, they are indeed for the killing of the encroaching or camping enemy. The main ramp room is basically the same but a little more detail has been added to the ceiling area in the form of suspended pipes.

The attic is very nice looking! There are columns depicting the elevator shafts that reach to the raised ceiling with sharp, crisp mini red lights on them. Quite nice! The ceiling in the attic is now a see through grate that shows a bit of darkened sky through it. The water under the bridge, (Where else would water be??) is a florescent green color, and when you jump in and look down the water tunnel, the farther you look, the more murky it gets, a nice effect!

The flag tower is rounded, and once again it has the great looking flag entity, a kind of glowing, reflecting colored look that is hard to describe. The choice of textures gives The Well an all new feel and look, and yet has left the actual structure and game play intact. This map is and will remain one of the true TF classic maps!
