Valve Licenses Intel MRM Technology for Team Fortress 2
Highly detailed, realistic looking models will make gameplay 
even more immersive


Kirkland, WA (March 16, 1999) - Valve LLC, the makers of 
the blockbuster PC game Half-Life, announced today that 
they will be using Intel's Multiresolution Mesh Technology 
for their upcoming title Team Fortress 2.  This technology 
will allow Valve to create a "scaleable" game with highly 
detailed, realistic looking models that automatically adjust 
performance to the gamer's PC.

said Gabe Newell, Valve co-founder and managing director.

Now Accepting TFC Clans for Season II

I wanted to get the word out that The Inferno is now 
accepting Team Fortress Classic clans to begin Season 
II with as soon as Team Fortress Classic is out. Since 
TFC is due out in a few weeks (around March 26th), I 
thought starting to accept clans early would allow me 
to get the 10 needed sooner rather then later.
 
Season II will consist of the 10 clans as I have already 
mentioned, with matches 8 vs 8 in size. This season 
isn't strictly double-elimination as Season I was, but 
still has some of that characteristic. There is a map 
containing 8 territories/countries, and each clan can 
select the one they want (if it's not taken) to initially 
control. The first week, I will pick which clan fights 
which, and the losing clans get their territory taken 
by the winning clans, and have one week to beat that 
clan and regain the territory, or else they are out. 
That's the double-elimination area of it. The winning 
clan will be the one that controls the whole world, so 
there is no set week limit on how long this season will 
go. The days the matches will be on still needs to be 
decided. A poll will go up on the site shortly for you 
to vote.
 
Head over to www.planetfortress.com/inferno and sign 
up your clan by hitting enlist and filling out the 
information that is wanted. The clan will then be added 
to the list, and have the map territory, and be ready to go!
 
The Inferno has been around since December 26th, 1997, 
with the first successful season in November of last 
year. Trying to stay on the forefront of new things, 
Season II, unlike season I, will be a TFC tournament, 
and one of the following seasons (probably IV or V) will 
be a Team Fortress 2. Inferno is currently looking for 
some form of help, most likely with getting match results 
and rankings and such. If you wish to help, email

SailorScout has decided to start up a new clan...here's the information:

After a lot of thinking and a heavy heart, I've decided to leave my clan
of Wolvesmoon for another. But not just another clan, but one of it's
members. 'The Exalted' is that clan..


As would be expected for a new clan, we are recruiting both HPBs and
LPBs. There are a few strict rules however, mainly centering around
attendance and guilds, but nothing the average player needs to be
concerned about. By the same token, since this is a new clan I'm willing
to be a bit flexible, and also will put these rules up on a page for all
to evaluate shortly.


It would be greatly preffered if you are an East Coast player, can make
games at 10 PM EST or later during the week and/or weekends, and have
actually hit adolescense.

My friend Lummoxx had an idea... ;P It's been kinda brought up elsewhere(not here) but i thought i would just put it up again..

I want to start with a couple questions for you server admins. First, what's your cost for running that server? You don't have to answer to me, just figure it in your head. Figure in the cost of the machine. The cost of the software. The cost of your excellent internet connection. Last question, why are the majority of your servers completely empty? I've got one reason for you. It's because there is nobody there to kick the little bastard(s) who is ruining the game for everyone else. Ok, so I haven't said anything new. All that is been there, done that. Now, how about the solutions to the problem? Guess what...I have an idea. There's actually quite a few server admins out there. Refresh your gamespy listing, and you'll see. There's quite a few servers. My idea is this. Some of you admins could get together, and start sharing rcon's. Develop a network of trusted admins who have the ability to get rid of problem players. Eventually, by word of mouth and recommendations from other server admins, it's possible to have an admin on a game server almost constantly. Yeah, it's not foolproof. But a trusted individual could only mess up once, and be quickly blacklisted. I believe that it is the minority who cause problems on servers. With a network of trusted individuals, it's possible that lame public servers could become a thing of the past. Anyway, feel free to let me know what you think, however, I'm not the one to get this going. Someone with a bit more time and webspace would be better suited to handle this. HME Rambles! -HME [1:02 am 12/28/98]

Well back on that anonymous email topic. I just recieved a nice four page rebuttal from whoever sent it in the first place. Seems many of the sites he/she sent it to hacked his/her argument to pieces and in some cases resorted to name calling. Anyway I'd just like to mention that I find some of his/hers arguments illogical. ie: the ping issue. Yes ping can be an advantage but that is an advantage that can never be stopped. Its not illegal or immoral. The hacked walls were a big advantage even more so than ping. Someone could prime a grenade and hit you dead on before you have a chance to even see the guy. I for one am hpb and yes lpb's can be annoying but they can be stopped. As for the illegal activities engaged, I agree with the writer of the email on that. It is every bit as bad as the cheater. An effort should be made to remedy the problem not enhance the will of the cheater. And to finalize this I'd just like to say that unfortunatly cheating is something that can probably never be stopped. As long as there is a will there is a way.

As you can read from the front page of Planetfortress front page, the fellows have asked some major questions about TF2 and the whole situation. I myself have some of my own that I would like answers too but do not plan on any formal email.
To VALVe
1) Does you ever plan on doing a massive face lift on the Half-Life multiplayer? It seems to me thats what it's going to take to fix the laggy peice of sh*t they call multiplayer.

2) Drop Sierra like a bad habit? IMO if VAVLe wants to ever make a Half-Life2...they need to get rid of Sierra and WON.net. I understand wanting to cut down on the warezing of HL, but it's not worth all the crap they just put the paying customers though.

3) That thing they call gamespy lite that Half-Life comes with....are they going to fix it so it works well? Rather then give the player what the server pings to the master, give the client the ips to ping for themselves to ping. It only seem common sense to me.

4) GOOD updates and information flow to the people? please? Also some GOOD patches for the hl stuff could be cool. the hl1006.exe was a joke patch. it fixed no MAJOR problems that really needed to be addressed except for the ident to WON.net(what a gay choice. won.net is CRAP) when doing a lan game.

To TFS:
1) Are you doing this for the money?

2) Are you going to keep TF2 up to date and playable? or rather are you going to release it so it's play able rather then some laggy ass peice of sh*t for us to try and play and then bitch at you for? then try to fix it?

3) TF3? for Q3 maybe? no more Sierra!

I'm probably going to be flamed by the whole TF community for these but damn it i want to know. i'm sick of this crap we get put though and then they expect us to pay more for what we thought we were gonne get in the first place...I was on irc last night(at least i think it was irc) and I heard this analogy about the whole thing: The whole HL + TF2 "add-on" thing is like going to a car dealer and you buy a car for $10,000...then they charge you another $10,000 for the keys...but since your bought the car...they'll give you a rebate for the keys...so instead of costing another $10,000...it'll only cost you another $5,000.
But in all actuallity, it's like buying the car and then they tell you it'll only be another $150 for the cd player, when its really gonna be a full $500 but they'll give it to ya for $450. Just a thought.

When News Pimps gather we have a hellova time. SailorScout(whose status in ANY clan is still "in a state of flux")....the bastard that he is...got us all on the TKN server and a fun time was had by all. Billings joined it and told everyone he is on crack. I for one belive him. ;P Then he began to recomend what I should refer to him as...."The Fonz". Well his partner in crime didn't agree with that and prefered something else. It was a fun time....I owned. ;P Sniped that crap out of everyone hehe. Here is the final screenshot and the SpeedStats. Cross4?-MwhahahA [10:28pm 11/29/98]

[MM]Sniper[A] has "fixed" Someone's map Border1. I love border1 emensly....but I cannot say I like this Cross4. He killed the truck by "redesigning" it (I think he needs to goto engineer school or something) and the curves in the land :( I'm always giving Someone flack but damn it border1 was a good idea! And it just got ruined with this Cross4. Also there is a lovely bug with the truck...if the truck goes and you get off and look where it used to be, there are 2 diamond shaped polys there. Oh and you can get squished if you jump between them and the truck ;P I don't really care for it at all, but feel free to download it and test if for yourself.

every change from TF version. Key figures in the TF community, and words
from the mapmakers who make this all possible.

All this and more is what I hope to put up, and it will all be possible
with your help. Please spread the word among your peers and try and
gather up any substantial past you can on TF events. The further back
you can go on this info, the better.

Thanks, with the help of the community which makes this history
possible, we can all represent ourselves in the best way. When TF2 does
indeed show, there will be a source for factual data on the first game
which made it all possible.

teamkills on, and we've had some rather hot matches there...

extra practices to focus on ending this streak and the sacrifice we had to
make was HSW)

Download Map Pack 1 (6.55 meg) and get some genuine map culture in your blood!
The instructions (MapPack1.txt) are in the zip file, READ THEM! If you install it incorrectly, it will not

4. You never make it out of you base with any grenades
5. You sit on the sniper roost tossing grenades over and when you sniper shoots you off the edge you start to grenade him.
6. You use spam instead of sugar on your breakfast cereal.

MPlayer Tourny-MwhahahA [12:05am 10/24/98]

Mplayer's Quake League the Mplayer Xtreme League has restructured taking a
year's worth of experience from our previous league and improving upon it to
a new age. Currently we offer Divisions in Quake: DeathMatch, Q-Ball, Team
Fortress; Quake 2: Deathmatch, CTF. and we will be opening a Rainbow 6
division within the next couple weeks. (Rainbow 6 play on Mplayer is FREE!!)
Our league structure consists of a ladder for each division, and upon the
end of our pre-season (3 weeks left) we will place the top 8 or top 12
clans, depending on the size of the division, into it's own league which
will have scheduled matches for an 8 week period, followed by a single
elimination tourney to determine the season champion.
Mplayer has recently improved their server infrastructure to get rid
of the problems they were having by increasing their servers by 2 fold,
restructuring their network, and having plans to quadruple it's capacity in
the next couple of months. Take a look at the site, it's still located at

In our never-ending search for something to stimulate the TF community, we have begun using our "final solution".

Last night the Organization voted and unanimously decided to thaw the man known as "The Sentinel" from his cryogenic coffin. A message in Real Audio format was posted, and control of the domain was handed over to him. On October 12th at 9 pm EST he will make another public address to proclaim the First Lady of Brimstone (aka Ichi-Onna) the "Queen Of Team Fortress". His Royal Badness demands that all listen to both of these addresses.

After a long deul with my computer....I came out on top. I'm now the proud owner of a p2-300 :) Anyway....here is some news. Last night, IRON took on KoQ in the Hell Spawn Wars and came out with a victory. They played on 2tech4 and the final cap score was 2-0.

New Tournament- HME [3:57pm 10/7/98]

Well I stopped over at Inferno today. It's a new TF tourney. I thought it was an interesting idea.. they decided to do a double elimination and the last two clans go head to head for the championship. From what I could tell it is going to be an ongoing tourney. The one thing I do not agree with though is that they have a no spam rule... the question is what is spam. Normally we define it as a bunch of random grenades tossed on the ground.. but what if those grenades are for a strategical reason. Say maybe that you need to go get some health but you don't want to leave the flag sitting there unguarded. So you do what most people would and toss down a nail grenade or a napalm. I had to comment on this topics: Ethics and Sportsmanship.

I agree with most everything that sailor said, however I have another thought to put forth regarding this issue. That is anonymity. Most people in TF or any internet game have the luxury of feeling extremely comfortable because they can exude these ridiculous, and if you would, as sailor put it, "racist" statements with out the fear of reprisal. It's easy to call someone a name or accuse them of some sort of indiscretion, since they are not doing it face to face. This is where people need to think through their thought patterns and ask themselves if they would do this in a personal environment. Most likely, it would be no.

Sportsmanship has always been the topic of debate, and it usually stems around those making another irrational statement and that the problem lies with the "younger" players. I don't agree. Again another stereotypical idea being thrown against the rocks, stemming from a few younger players trash talking while on the publics. But older players trash talk also. No one points fingers at them and says they shouldn't be allowed in clans or games. Granted, older clans tend to be more, lets say stable, but not any better or more established in proper ethics.

I think that leagues have tried to establish rules that deter unsportsmanlike conduct, such as the ban of no MM1 chatter, referees and the such. But ultimately its is the responsibility of the clans themselves to "police" their own members and dictate what is acceptable and what isn't. Until then, the pubs will boast these unsavory conditions, but as more and more clans adopt more sportsmanlike rules of conduct, then it will spill over into the public servers they play on, and most people will defer from unpalatable remarks towards other players.

I received this email today from Kinlord of Braveheart reguarding my news post about the sentry code:

Like to clarify something with you I read on your page today.

The sentry tracking code was unchanged from 2.6 through 2.81

Gudlyf only tried to adjust the tracking with new code in 2.82 and 2.9 betas to fix what QW had apparently messed up with its ability to track clients.

Reports have been coming in of both the 2.81 and 2.9 sentry being faulty in QW2.3

I believe we are just eliminating one problem up front by removing the new 2.9 code so that we can now focus on what might be wrong with the older code.

All feedback regarding this issue is appreciated on the TFBFP.

New Models for TF2.9 :)- MWHAHAHA [6:17pm - 9/21/98]

Well this is kinda old news for those who know about the TF Bug Fixing Message board...but for those of you who don't know...Someone by the name of DOX (who from what i've seen) is a kick ass mdl maker. Well anyway he's making new mdls and new grens for the different classes (a new dartgun and flame thrower is the works). Here is the message board message if you would like to see some screenshots. They are awesome looking. DOX is also the guy who put together the Engineer Cool Crap upgrade that can be found on my files page.

Also as an update on the DS info I reported yesterday, I found this on PlanetFortress buried down on the bottom:

After a little over 2 years of clan life, Dark Shadows has decided to disband. It was not an easy decision but everyone thought it was best. With school becoming increasingly more in some lives, work in others, the time had come to close up shop. 16 ex-DS members have gone on to form Predatorz, others have joined various clans, and a few have decided to leave the TF scene and give it a rest. Good luck goes out to all of those DS members who are pursuing other clans and/or goals in life. It was a blast for everyone and we are all sad to see the era come to an end.

Well i was screwing around on The Takens erver Gibbles 'n Bits and if you ever have a fun scrim...I recommend setting serverinfo rj 100 ;P...anyway alittle update on how my level is doing. It's coming along slowly. I estimate it'll be done either this week end or sometime early next week. I have no idea for a name yet...But I think It'll be "The TF Syndicate's house o Pimps" or something. The outside is a 2fort clone but the inside has some new ideas that HME and myself have come up with. I'll see if I can get some screenshots up when I get it nice and pretty.

This map is >based< (based, not copied) off of Someone's "engbat" (Engineer Battle). Improved architecture, textures, and gameplay has gone into this fine piece of work :) Engbat was a LOT of fun, and I'm trying to make that experience come alive once again. Please read the readme file to completely understand how this and his map where meant to be played. Trust me, this is a LOT of fun.....

Scrimmage..?- HME [10:04pm - 9/13/98]

Well who better to add to the lull in news than me :) Well my clan, The Ancient Souls, had an uneventful scrimmage tonight against Wasps. Unfortunately we ran into server problems. The first server we were on crashed then we moved on to the backup one which when the map was restarted cut the players down to 3 each clan. We went on playing, and throughout my clan members reconnected while the Wasps didn't. The result was 7on3 and a pretty well pointless game. Oh well.

Well I was reading on Sailor Scout's Page and he had installed a NeXt-style interface for his windows. Now I have been known to use linux from time to time so I decided to go and install it. Anyway here is the url if you want to go look at it's info for yourself: http://www.litestep.net. Anyway it's an AfterStep clone for Windows95/98/NT. Now I wouldn't recomend it for people who 1) have an extremely long listing in your Start Menu->Programs or 2) run at anything lower than 800x600. Even at 800x600 some stuff still gets cut off. If you like the X-Windows shell AfterStep go d/l this thing. It's pretty cool.
