Maybe they do play Quake, just not with you? Or does that bring the feeling and emotion of sad sad lonesomeness on to strong? Sorry.

I'll check back in a couple of weeks to see if Quake will actually change for the better or if it's just all talk like it's aways been.

So you can not play more either way? ;OOF; I recall you saying it is impossible for you to Quake for (insert reason here). Just making an observation, I recall once upon a time the Souless&Mindz duo ruled the 2v2 CAx Tourneys 3 times back to back.

Expecting change without helping the cause, good game their soldier!

On another note, the idea of clans seems great, but the question should be, is there a need? Most people seem to play alone these days as socialism in the game has died and everyone disagrees with half of what is or what is not going on or in their direction they see it fit. Basically, control issues.

if you want to revive clan rivalry, you need something for the clans to work towards, that feels rewarding to them. More recent games seem to go for things like achievements. At a clan level, that would require registering them somewhere in order to track it so people can't cheat. Which requires some server, and modifiying servers to track that junk.
But the real challenge is figuring out things that are actually rewarding, that feel like they are actually attainable, and that allow for people to actually still have lives when they're not playing quake.

Clans are good because they give a sense of community and real involvement.
Clans are bad because they require dedication, predictable/scheduled play times, not being a dick to your clan mates. Not being in a clan can also weaken your motivation to play.

Not really any different from an MMO.

There simply is not enough active players to have clan matches.
Just having a group of like minded Quakers will have to do if you are serious about a clan.I should Know mine is the largest with 20 and only about 3 are ever on at one time.Of those maybe 2 have the same interests.
But I would be glad if someone else could form one and compete with us at any level would be better than the nothing that I see as it exists now.

Some random ideas to fuel the fire:

If the goal is to separate the good players, then have those players be captains (and vice-captains, maybe) of a clan. If the server can track win/loss stats (percentage?) by player, then people can show their worth for the position. If players were somehow placed automatically via ability, then there'd be even teams. If we're lucky, it could calculate odds of a team winning based on the slight "unevenness"....

I think if these clans were only sort of specific "scoring" clans for quakeone.com, people could retain their current clan, since I doubt many want to leave. Perhaps monthly scored groups with top ten on front page? Then, the top n groups' members become leaders of next month's clans. Don't forget to record all past wins and rankings.

People are forgetting you don't build ANYTHING by "placing every peice into place at once".

If you start anywhere,it's with the foundation. Two people. Leader/CoLeader.

FOK. We aren't building all of Rome right now,we're just fn building the Coliseum at the moment guys, ONE peice of stone at a time.

edited in later ; I had a post called 'The Clan - Willing Post' , and it highlighted clans recruiting & players willing to join a clan, and at first it worked very well and everyone filled out quickly.

The only way i see this proposition happening is by expanding our player base to larger numbers. Seeing as how we have been diminishing in numbers rather than increasing i don't see a chance of having any considerable matching in the future. Who knows maybe some miracle will happen and ID will re-release quake1 as a bonus feature for whatever game they come out with next....would be pretty sweet with all the new things that have been added by this community and would increase our numbers. But like i say the chance of that is slim to 0.

The blessings of ID software in any scope or fashion would make our struggle easier.

Before we can start discussing reviving clans, we have to get the player numbers back up to a respectable level. We can't even begin to talk about bringing clans back if we have no one to be in a clan.

A few years back, there was wide discussion happening in regards to bam's and r00k's new work on making CAX an improved mod.

The issue right now is that too much of the current emphasis on this website is focused toward single player, modding, mapping, and so forth. Regularly, the multiplayer discussion gets the short end of the stick.

The DM scene is still "well off" all things considered, but also has the last remnants of the player base that was once part of the 'Rome' of Quake multiplayer heydays.

So here we are, trying to figure out how to bring back people, and these are my suggestions:

                          1. Whether underground or what not, we have to somehow make Quake available to download through this website or in some other way. It's ridiculous that so many people who come back have to figure out through some complicated maze how to get their hands on this game. Many people come here looking for a download link, trying to be part of the community and playing online and have no idea how to start playing because access to the game is hard to come by.

                          2. Make it so people can launch their Quake directly from this website. During my time Quaking, I found it frustrating that I would see 3-4 people on a server (CAX, CTF) and by the time I load up Quake and join the server they're all gone because no one else joined the game. There should be a 'Join' button next to each server on the server list, allowing us to launch our client.

                          3. Statistics, statistics, statistics. That website that Mindz used to feature in his signature on the forums absolutely blows. The stats are inaccurate, and count for a lot of 'observer time' which makes a lot of the stats ridiculous. I've been vouching for people to post stats for a long time. There are many capable people here who know how to get this done, and have been lazy to do so. I remember during Mono's CTF tournament, where he'd accumulate all the autostats and manually put them up on the website. I hit refresh on Sunday like a motherfucker. I really enjoyed seeing where I stacked up against some of the best players in CTF (CD, Vis, Bosh, etc.) in terms of flag kills, flag returns, captures, quads, overall frags, deaths ratio, etc. In terms of multiplayer, statistics are an absolute reward for anyone who plays it. If there was direct access to statistics on this website, I think you would see so may people clamour to Quake and start enjoying it again; it would also make it pretty clear cut who the best players are, and it would give new players/worse players something to work toward.

                          3. Force 5 of the most popular maps in a rotation on both CAX and CTF. I've said this numerous times as well, but why the hell in this day are we still logging on and playing DM3 over and over and over again? It's like we've collectively reached some sort of senility and neglect toward the game where its like "ahh fuck it, just keep playing this, who cares, the game is dead any way". It's completely deconstructive, and it only adds to people leaving because they subconciously believe the 'game is over' since we're playing the same stale map in every mod.

                          4. Pool together money, or if someone is wealthy enough, host a Chi server for CTF. The MTOWN Chi server for CTF was an absolute beast. I played there regularly against Frenzy, 'player' (aka Bon - IIRC, he ran the server, fantastic player), and a few other top guys. That server was the shit and always full, after I played there I instantly got better skill wise. It was so different because it was fast paced CTF action, you reach a certain number of frags, and the map is over, you reach a time limit, the map is over, there were the 4 main runes, and you had a quick hook (not a mace like in 3wave, and not a slow chest hook like in rune quake, just a quick regular axe hook which was for me the most fun hooking I've ever had). I truly believe if we can get a mainstay CTF server up again that resembles what MTOWN was, and spread the word around, we can get some of the Shmack guys to bring other dudes back and get the server populated. From there, we can branch off those guys to play other mods as well.

                          5. Utilize the changes that r00k and Bam were creating recently (as of a few years ago). They were adding things to CAX code to make it so you would see 'Podium' standings (ala olympic style) at the end of each match. They were also incorporating live stats that would be tracked for every player. The ideas they were putting together and working on were fucking incredible and possibly would have saved Quake as we know it.

                          6. Start featuring "allstar" players on this website. Disco put together some great videos a while back that really fired up the CAX scene for a short while, a lot of people start playing again in early 2011 because CAX tournaments sprang up, and Disco made some great promo videos which people got into. Maybe have a demos section and feature some of the top players, endorse those demos, tell people to download them and watch some of the top guys play. For the top players, get the help of video people here and put together some youtube clips (as other people have suggested). Having new people get to know the top guys by 'nickname recognition' brings attention to the game. Next time someone joins a server, they may look forward to playing against a Jack Burton (Bib9), a wolv, a sting, a spoon, cata.. so on and so forth

Anyhow, that's all I can think of for now. But if there are some truly proactive people in here that are able to do some of these challenging things, I think Quake enthusiasts would be forever greatful.

PS. Get some of the modders and mappers and single player guys in here to play multiplayer. There are at least 20-30+ guys I see who regularly post here who I've never seen on a Quake server in my life, and I have no idea why. It seems only logical that they'd enjoy playing multiplayer if they enjoy the single player game.
