    There are pros and cons to both sides of this, but the key point is that distributing pak1.pak is currently illegal.

    I think ID Software should release pak1.pak for redistribution, as developers have and continue to invest hundreds of thousands of hours in engines, mods and other things that, for the most part, simply cannot be used without pak1.pak

    The $25 download page is the ONLY place in the universe you can buy Quake firsthand. That just is not right. People should be able to buy it on the cheap in stores, ID used to sell Ultimate Quake, which had Quake 1, 2 and 3 on it for $20.

    It is this kind of stuff that causes the Quake community stress. What are we supposed to do? The 100,000 maps we have and the 10,000 maps and the 1000 mods ALL require pak1.pak to be used. Of course we want our creations to be used, want people to play our maps, and try new engines on a server.

    A fair percentage of those things are still used and developed, yet ID Software doesn't sell Quake 1 at a reasonable price and does not let retailers sell it for $3.99 or with a pack of other old games for $9.99.

      that's why openquartz exists, but people avoid that because it's "gay" and do nothing to improve and "decrapify" it.

        Warez is very wrong, I would not advertise anyone cracking software here, the feds ARE watching. Besides, you risk getting hacked everytime you visit a crack site.

        Baker I agree with you 100%, I think we should all petition ID software to start selling the software RIGHT FROM THIS SITE, special offer for $10. We have the power of the people! Let's do it!

          I think you are right, we've been talking about this idea for years and yet never followed with anything.

          Anyone know how much ID Software lets that one cell phone company sell registered Quake for whatever cell phone can play it? I'd bet it isn't $25.

          I'll spend some time tonight and draft up a petition asking ID Software to do one of 4 things to allow the Quake development community to reasonably be able to continue their work.

          I've thought of four different options ranging from ...

          a) Making pak1.pak available
          b) Changing the price to something that more reflects the fair market value of Quake in context to its 10 year old age
          c) Permitting the distribution of pak1.pak at sites that agree to some form of free advertising for ID Software on their home page.
          d) Allowing communities to purchase bulk licenses, like 5,000 downloads for $1000 or something and allowing communities to do fund raising drives to try to raise the $$$.

          I would like to believe to there is a legal, honorable solution that would actually work.

          I'll work on something tonight and get it posted for discussion.

          If anyone has additional thoughts on this, feel free to add your 2 cents to this thread.

            I don't think id would be willing to do that, though they might have a Quake4-bundle with it up their sleeve much later. (They do it with every Quake game produced)

                Why don't you think ID would do that? We're the only ones keeping it alive and it would be profitable for them to partner up with us.

                    How is pak1 REQUIRED, for modders?
                    Code:
                    void COM_CheckRegistered (void)
                    {
                    	Cvar_Set ("cmdline", com_cmdline);
                    	Cvar_Set ("registered", "1");
                    /*
                    	FILE	*h;

                    	COM_FOpenFile ("gfx/pop.lmp", &h);
                    	if (h)
                    	{
                    		Cvar_Set ("cmdline", com_cmdline);
                    		Cvar_Set ("registered", "1");
                    		fclose (h);
                    	}
                    */
                    }
                    does this infringe any agreements??

                      Pak1.pak contains Hell Knights, Vores, Rotfish, Enforcers.

                      It is not hard to make a multiplayer mod, like xCTF that avoids using all that. It would be easy to make a DM mod or RuneQuake mod that avoids all those unavailable models and sounds.

                      For some multiplayer mods, like the one that runs at fear.lokinetworks.com or Beatdown Alley, removing those models would be removing 1/3 of the modifications.

                      For single player, maps like 2005's Kinn Marcher, Concentric Devastation, Quoth, Masque of the Red Death, the Wind Tunnels sequel that I can't spell without looking it up, or the other hundreds of worthy maps, they all employ those pak1 models.

                      Mods. Well, myself, I'm not much into single player mods. Nehahra requires pak1, QMatrix doesn't require pak being a total conversion, and beyond that someone like CheapAlert or one of the many other developer types that have registered here would be more qualified to comment.

                        Ah, well scanning thru the source, as that code above shows it looks in pak1 for pop.lmp, and sets the registered cvar true. So pak1 is required to set that cvar in the true state. But the only check for that cvar to be TRUE is for starting a game with an expansion pack. I though for a minute that they disallowed ONLINE gameplay entirely without a registered copy, (then again maybe they should have)...

                          so you're telling me the shareware installer that you make available for download is the same one that ID software released 10 years ago?

                          because you can't modify that package, it's in the license agreement. and making an installer out of the zip is just that, modifying the package.

                              It's the fact it's illegal. I don't care if this introduces any new people or not.

                              Try installing the original shareware installer with Windows XP 64.

                                Prove it, pretzel boy!

                                Show us where it that is in the shareware license agreement. The shareware license agreement is very permissive in the grant of redistribution.

                                and making an installer out of the zip is just that, modifying the package.
                                The FreeQuake shareware installer package installs every single file the original does, nothing more and nothing less.

                                And our package has been featured on the PlanetQuake home page under news, among other places. We don't have anything to hide and went to great efforts to make our install legal, including making it into 3 installs because the GPL states that you cannot combine distributions.
