Just tweak the settings until it runs smoothly. I get 200FPS with average settings and 40 to 120FPS with quite high quality settings.

I know you can reduce the quality to get decent fps, but that's not the only reason I avoid Darkplaces. I stick with Qrack, because it has many features that Darkplaces does not - some of which I requested. A skybox config file and individual map configs are a few examples.

Don't get me wrong; Darplaces is awesome. I just prefer Qrack for its stability, and those few extra options that make it great. Sorry to take this thread off topic once again...

          • I have a question for those who have downloaded the Quake skins. I am making a new pack with skins that stick more to the classic Id look and I want to know which skins out of the original pack need to be redone. I have already made new versions of the grunt, dog, ogre and enforcer that look more like the originals. Here comes the question now: Which other monsters need to be redone?
            Let me know.
            Thanks.

            • I say finish all them in faithful, this can go down as one of the most important 24-bit skin packages ever.

Darkplaces will skip bumpmap if normal is present, but from the screenies it looks like it utilized bump map instead of normal, did u applied alpha chanel on normal map?

                • No. What does the alpha channel do?

                  • It stands for transparency in general but in darkplaces in normal maps, its vital for parallax maping, it makes the bumps look more realistic and "deeper", get yourself crazy bump its an app used to render normal maps and others.

                    • I think the 24-bit and lumas are more important. I like how this is only focused on faithful remakes and not over the top bump work. I guess if it really convinces you, you can always make a darkplaces version of your releases for those who want it..but you know

                      • I got over 40 fps in dp so idc about other engines tbh.

                        • Actually, I tried the normal, bump, gloss thing just out of curiosity, that's all. I think that a solid pack with faithful skins that can be used without the need of a high-end computer will be appreciated by more people. I have been adding "fake" 3d details to the skins that can be seen without having to go on dark places at 3 fps (like my zombie). The "classic" skins will have lumas (like the grunt) and be in 24-bit tga format. To save space, the lumas are smaller (for a texture 1024 x 1024, the luma is just 512 x 512).
On the other hand, I got a demo of crazybump and played with it for a while. It's a cool program, but I would have to create several normals with different levels of detail and then edit them in photoshop to create something I can use. I may do it eventually, but not before finishing the faithful skins.

                          • I understand your point of view, actually i have to say you got killer skills when it comes to design, i can help you out if you like with dp version. Im really curious how your skins would look like if they would be utilizing all available rendering techniques ...

But keep in mind that people can disable additional textures or even resize them manualy if they got issues with frame rate

                            • I agree with Fragger. I am absolutely against making these skins bump-mapped messes. First of all, it's bad for people like me who don't even use Darkplaces. The skins made by d1554573r don't work in Qrack, unless you sit there and apply the gloss, glow, and norm to the skin using photoshop. Making faithful skins with just a luma is the way to go if you want to support ALL Quake engines out there, and not just Darkplaces.

Fragger is doing a good job here. I think he chose his methods wisely.
