Wow, it feels like I hit raw nerve! No offense was meant but as a designer I like QC because it helps me design stuff. Telling me you are going to replace it with Java because there is huge Java crowd that might be interested in programming games seems odd. I am not against anything evolving (you certainly like to insult people as well) but why replace QC with something that is just another code language, think bigger, evolve, the games industry now uses graphical languages like Unreal Kismet or Cryengine Flowgraph. Create something that allows designers to design stuff and not get stuck with text scripting. Create a small visual editor (in Java if you want) that has design entities that people can link together to make gameplay.

If this is what you truly want to do then drop the Quake connection, there is no point in having the link, you will just be compared all the time. You are obviously creating something different and like you said, evolving, then drop the baggage and start a fresh, create your own game identity. As many people have said already, Quake already exists, move on and create something better.

A Quake community is just that, about QUAKE! When it becomes NOT about Quake... it's a <insert something not to do with Quake name here> community! You should go back and read what you write, or... have someone else read it and then maybe you'll see how odd it reads!

After you're last post, updating us on your "phases" and asking for opinions all I could think of is your project is only missing three things at this point:

      1)Location(Office space)
      2)Employees(To fill needed office space)
3)Money(to make payroll to pay employees)

Your plan lays out the creation of a full blown NEW game! In every aspect now.

This isn't hating so don't go there. And yes, as others have stated, move on beyond Quake and quit bashing the communities inability to "evolve". It's freakin' Quake dude.. so it's either a level, a mod, a TC or an enhancement of... Q U A K E!

It's had a long run as it is, but honestly, 30 MORE years you're worried about, c'mon?!

      ...

Look at killpixels thread, this makes sense!

Anyway, no harm meant just stating my opinion, take care,
      - damage_

this project is not quake. its something to the effect of bringing the spirit of quake (all that makes the game good) to a new generation. inevitably, there are those who will play this game and will wonder, "what was the original quake like?".result of this= fan base increases, the universe is saved. end of story.

you will have to excuse my rambling and speculation.

          QR

You should definitively tell an idea of your calendar (schedule) cause... why anyone would hurry to propose/do something when there is not deadline or tick tack tick tack??

You could 1st tell us here you open which positions for when... you plan to start having meetings or material or objectives etc.

Put the pression ON man... it always help!

          P.S.

By the way... is quake dying... well if it is it didn't start Yesterday but many years ago that's why I believe in a new growth in coming months like if we have 2-3-4-5-10 players that will come back to the scene... then we go from 100 to 200 every year.

What you have to remember is the great number of people who tried this game and who are willing to come back soon or later to a kind of "GOD" in game industry... do not underestimate this symbol.

            Howdy Sock,

Sorry... I may have gone a bit overboard. You & golden_boy have a tendancy of 'telling it like it is,' and it deflates my sails. Then I re-analyze everything, I ask myself why I'm doing this, what I'm trying to prove, and all that. So, I have hit it harder, or I'm just blowing smoke.

Quake will always be Quake; but everyone has forgotten what Quake is. It was the first. Now everyone wets themselves talking about COD, Halo, - there'd be neither without Quake. (Even the sequals aren't Quake, what the hell kind of a sequel ISN'T a sequal?)

I like your points - they're 'on the level.' I've thought about making this a different game - but it makes me feel like I abandoned my kids in the middle of the desert.

You inspire me to get back to "parsing delimiters" and start working on the real meat and potatoes.
You're awesome MG. Thanks for always encouraging.

Thank you GB. You give very effective constructive criticism - and you seem to care at the same time. I appreciate you.

This is a sad and a good day.

I have to shelf this project for now. I just got an internship, ("on the job" computer programming) I applied for it months ago and fought very hard for it. I was certain I didn't have a chance in hell. I got it.

Ironic - it's a paid internship that has better compensation than my current job, which I need to keep. This means 60-70 hour work weeks. If this project had more of a following, things would be different. Please lock this thread, my site will remain open, but the forum board will be closed.

On top of all this, it's hit me very hard that I don't know as much as I should. I can't run a project when my skills aren't enough to be a major asset.

lame - I believed in you, man. Why does everyone "realize" some bullshit AFTER they make a big deal? You know what I realized? I realized that I can do anything I invent in my head, no matter how complicated or unrealistic. I realized that I can do this because I refuse to realize that I can't.

Congrats on the internship and by itself that is enough reason to shelve your project, but you can keep all this can't bullshit.

The really cool thing about ignorance and lacking skill sets is that they are both great opportunities to learn and grow. Sounds like a bad Hallmark card, but it's true.

Here's to actualizing one's potential! Huzzah!

                        EDIT:

Just yesterday I quit my current job as a graphic designer to do something totally different and acquire an entirely new skill set. Saying that seemed relevant for some reason.

You can still believe in me - you can do this because you refuse to realize that I can fail. This isn't an "END" it part of the process. Just, a process that's taking longer than I thought. A process that involves me becoming, not just more skilled, but a better person.

Your belief in me helps us both. I believe in you. You make things. I'm a maker too. If you feel this is just a cop out.... I invite you to a round or two of fisticuffs, then maybe a beer.

                          ---EDIT---
Bottom line, I don't have time, between wife, kids, internship, & work. & I've done ALL KINDS of "insane" to sabotage this from the beginning. This has helped me out a lot, I've a much more detailed course of action now. I hope that can be respected.
