  • Looking to upgrade my PC (Video Card)

Hey If there's anybody out there who can give me some serious help I'm wanting to upgrade.

    My current specs are

    Windows XP
    NF6G-VSTA (1 x PCI Express x16 slot)
    AMD 64bit Athlon 3800+ (2.4Ghz) Single CPU
    3GB DDR2 (3 sticks)
    SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS
    GeForce 6150SE (Integrated Video)
    500Watt PSU
I'd like to be able to play games like Borderlands, Prototype, Mass Effect with more then my current FPS ( 5FPS ).

Basicly I'm looking for a video card upgrade! I've had my eye on the 7900 and 8800 from Nvidia whaddya think?

I know integrated video sucks but this computer was given to me.

    Anyway, help is appreciated! Thanks!

Really I'd just like to have decent FPS in some of the newer 2007-2008 games... I don't wanna play Crysis on Ultra Detail, but I'd like to play Crysis at least, ya dig?

I'm lookn to spend about $70 to at least get this pc a video card until I can afford to build my originally planned rig

That's not a problem. Every video card I've ever gotten has shipped with DVI/VGA adaptors.

Well, here's one of the origional 8800GTS 320MB cards on ebay going for just that. PNY Tech NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB - FREE SHIP! - eBay (item 140361000352 end time Dec-18-09 20:41:43 PST)

I don't know if he's selling the DVI/VGA adaptors with it or not. If you do buy this and there's no DVI/VGA adaptor in the package, I'll send you one of mine, free of charge.

Intresting... I wonder if I should not be cheap and get the 8800GTX? It seems superior to the 8800GTS while only costing about $30-$50 more

The 8800gtx has 768mb memory on a 384-bit bus and it has 128 shaders. The 8800gtshas 320mb (or 640mb) memory on a 320-bit bus and has 96 shaders. It's enough to play Crysis on High without problems. Ultra quality or whatever the hell it's called unlocks the DX10 features and it should be playable but it won't be exactly smooth.

Whats up with the Radeon lineup? I like how Radeons create shadows in games over Nvidia, Nvidia shadows look hard...

since my chipset is Nvidia does it matter which side I choose? Would an Nvidia video card preform better on a Nvidia motherboard and vice versa?

Nope. The only thing that matters is if you plan on going multi-GPU (crossfire/SLI) you have to make sure the motherboard is compatable. There are few motherboards that do both. Image quality is really a moot point since the 8 series, although the 5xxx series did just come out (with support for DX11) and Nvidia seems to be stumbling all over themselves trying to get thier new card out. The only other thing is that only Nvidia cards support Physx, but Physx is a bullshit technology that eats up gpu power to make stuff move nicer (oooooh). It's really being overpowered by Havok, which is cpu-based physics processing.

I just kept picking out Nvidia cards because people in the Quake community tend to favor Nvidia. This card here is a real performer and is stronger than the 8800GTX.
                      Newegg.com - HIS H485FN512P Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

I picked the 4850 because the cheapest 5xxx series card worth getting is about $300. If you don't get at least a 5850, you'll be running underpowered hardware if you try to run stuff in DX11 mode.
