Um... why would you recommend getting 16 gigs of RAM? Did I fall asleep for 10 f'ing years or something? Do games require that much now? Having 12 gigs of unused RAM will REALLY help your performance... great idea. I know he said price wasn't a problem but that's just stupid. 6 gigs maximum. Other than that disco you're parts suggestions were spot on.

Why don't you install win7 on one partition, put My Documents on another and bind mount them.

      Oh, wait...

You'll have to pick your own case. If you want a sound card, I hear the Asus Xonar is good. Stay away from Creative.

ASUS products are beyond good to be honest, they are just down right awesome based on my experiences with their hardware.

They are the only aftermarket manufacturer that I have done repeat buisness with, and would highly recommend ASUS (taiwan-based company) in any of your endeavours involving the best bang for you buck..

wait for what? You just need to change the target under "My Documents" properties. No need in complicating it any more than that
(and re-apply the new target with every new os installation)

If you're saying what I think you're saying, you probably need to be aware that the My Documents location is fully configurable in Windows. It might not be called "bind mount" (or whatever), it might not use the same terminology or UI (or lack thereof) as a certain other OS does, but that doesn't make it any way inferior for the purposes of relocating it elsewhere.

If you're not saying what I think you're saying, then apologies for taking you up wrong.

It wasn't when I used windows xp. Or at least it wasn't simple, it was a cheesy registry hack that was a pain in the ass. Maybe it's changed in Windows 7.

I was saying what you think I was saying. ;D

Right-click on My Documents and select "Properties", then "Target"?

OK, in fairness it might be different in XP Home vs XP Pro, although according to the documentation (clicky) it's not.

There's also gpedit.msc in XP Pro for a more powerful variant on it that lets you move other directories under the user profile also.

ON SUBJECT -> NextGen Gaming PC

You don't even need $1,000 for a nice gaming rig. I just pulled it off for around $850, with the option of upgrading for the next several years to stay up to date....

Back on topic and I think that's a nail/head interface. Making sure that you have upgradability and expansion built in to whatever you decide on is quite important. You want to aim for a situation where upgrades of components will see you good at least until the 3D card or CPU interface/slot changes and no newer components will fit. So a mobo that can take that 16GB is an essential purchase, even if you only go with 4GB right now.

16 gbs was just because he said money wasnt an issue so why not get more. I dont know what else he does but getting more ram is not a bad thing

It is the way of the future so why fight it if you have the money? Saying that it is not needed is not really true, there are multiple apps that could use all the ram it can grab. He also may be a program whore and run 22 things at once.

He also might be running a few Virtual servers, playing crysis on one, and going back and forth to another while editing 2-3 10MP pictures loaded into adobe photoshop, playing music in WM while the crazy art is playing in tune with the music, msn and gmail chatting, posting on quakeone, surfing porn and with 9 other chrome tabs open, while the weather and stock quotes are streaming real time to his desktop gadget and all of this while his virus scan program is running in the background.

WHO KNOWS what he is going to do. I just said hey, you want a badass system and to show off your huge e-pene PC, here ya go. To say there is no reason for it is silly. Thats like saying there is no reason for a 600HP engine. Sure, you wont really be using it cruising through the city, but if you get a chance to open up on that thing, you might enjoy it and appreciate that you splurged and bought that Viper.

I like Viper's just fine. I'm just going on what he said Disco. He said what's the best PC for playing next-gen games, not playing next gen games while doing 30 things at the same time. If he is doing professional work and running really memory intensive programs then yeah that'd be fine... but for next-gen gaming, 16 gigs is just way too much. Building a badass gaming pc doesn't need to cost 5 grand.

This is great guys, but you kinda lost me at the RAID part...

Oh yeah, also I just want it to play games (one at a time) and do some software dev stuff. Never can have too much RAM unless its past Win7's RAM limit. What is it? 12 GB? 18GB? I know XP's is 2 GB.

Someone mind, sorta rephrasing the last couple pages for me?
I just got "stay away from RAID and Creative"

If your win7 installation is 32 bit the most RAM you can have without PAE is 4GB with anything other than the starter addition. With Ultimate the most you can have is 192GB.
