Get MS Security Essentials - it really is quite awesome. No resource hogging, lightweight, installs in a snap, sits there totally out of your way, and proven reliable too.IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/

avg is the best there is. use it in combination with spybot S&D and adaware 9.6 and you got the best security there is, and 100% free
just dont get adaware 10, it sucks, eats up your cpu
so find a download for adaware 9.6 instead, and dont update when it asks you too.are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
> then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

I use Avast, I used to use AVG until one day I couldn't eradicate a virus off my PC , and was stopping my AVG from running/just a whole fucked up ordeal.
Installed Avast,it saved my ass and my current Windows installation / uninstalled AVG , used Avast ever since.
In all truth, ALL free Anti-Virus solutions are A+ because well, they are free, and saving you $60 bucks,or more,at your favorite software shop, where ever that is. Spend that money on your woman ,or a game.Want to get into playing Quake again? Click here for the Multiplayer-Startup kit! laissez bon temps rouler!

spybot search & destory uses alot of resources, as does mcafee which comes with a lifetime free subscription from my isp but i hate it, avg is really good and free, and i like superantispyware , malwarebytes use their trial versions which make it fully featured for 30 days and then reinstall it, is a good choice too. Don't pile too many antivirus and anti mal/spyware because it can freeze up your pc due to the resource overload. Had that happen to me.

another good antivirus suite or firewall to add to an antivirus is Agnitum Outpost you can find it at Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

I find that throwing salt in the air and screaming "OOGAH BOOGAH" works pretty good. You have to do it right before a page loads and it works best if you use kosher salt.
downside: It can get pretty messy if you do a lot of searching
upside: you can do a sweep up and reuse the salt.
Another method is to loop your router so whatever is sent to your computer gets sent right back to where it came from.

Microsoft Security Essentials, plus Malwarebytes Anti-Malware if you feel MSE's real time protection and virus scanner may have failed you, plus Spybot Search and Destroy.

@Syluxman - The technology has actually been out there for thousands of years, but it was suppressed because TPTB wanted to convince you that you need a paid membership and a cpu consuming software (that actually spies on you) to be safe.
Microsoft couldn't PAY ME to use their software for security. I do not trust Microsoft or Bill Gates at all when it comes to MY best interests.
