            I have something to add to this. I was an AS programmer for years and years. I loved programming in AS and made some pretty cool stuff using the AIR extension, but with every upgrade of AIR I noticed that programs I had sweat blood and tears over were being broken. I studied OOP and design pattern books geared for AIR development and utilized top tier programming practices.

            When I realized that Adobe was going to break everything I ever made, I swore never to use their bullcrap ever again. There are alternatives.

              MSE is a fine AV product, and they didn't develop it anyways, they just purchased it. I've been using it now for years, but I don't get viruses anyways. Peter Ferrie is one of the researchers on it, and he's a real nice guy and quite knowledgeable. Heck, MSE even detects ancient dos malware.

              I think the BEST AV is firefox+noscript+common sense.

                  MSE might not be perfect but it'll scan downloads and won't bog down your machine too much. Which is much better than can be said for other products.
                  Remember that MS are the ones that want to demonstrate that windows is not a sloth - virus scanners are a large part of that perception.

                      Foxit Reader, problem goes away.

                      And as for Linux/etc being malware-free? Ha. Haha ha ha ha.

                      Think Linux is free from malware? Think again; it's been hacked. | Computerworld Blogs

                          The article misses several important points I am afraid...

                          - first of all, nowhere it is safe opening unknown files. It is normal and well known, to say ``it applies also in Linux'' is stating the obvious. To say ``so Windows is more secure'' is lying.
                          - one episode against hundred is not very significant. In my line of work I seen hundred of computer of both sides and while I know that all OS sucks for different reasons, Windows do sucks more in security field.
                          - luckily fixed, but as windows fanboy (just check his bio) he omitted in the first version of the article that the attacker would have the power of the ircd user, definitely not root.

                          About the topic though I would go with AVG.

                            Other people look to make/create those same things unsecure. Thats the order of things...

                            Your right, being a smart PC user is the best way to avoid Virus's and Malware. These things lurk on sites like this ;

                            Games + Downloads from the WWW = fail, do not ever download Roms,Games,or in general ZIP's/RAR files/Self-Extracting EXE Archive files from random websites just because "You want something".

                            In my experience using TPB or another reputable site & torrent technology is your safest bet, only trust uploads with green or pink "thumbs up" or wtf ever the icons are of.Avoid porn sites completely!!!

                            Installing an Anti Virus is only half the ordeal. You need to setup regular update schedules (like, mine is set to update at 3am) , Setup also regular hard drive scans atleast once a week and if you have lots of HD space/data make sure your giving your scan enough time to run,and don't cancel it prematurely.

                            Make sure real-time scanning is enabled, most of the damage done from nonsense software is done in the first "You Clicked it / Browsed to a website" and if you aren't using the RT features, you might as well not even be using any antivirus software.
