Quake was a test for new 3D software! They read a few short stories by Lovecraft, stuck in a few monsters, and drew up a few maps. What to you is a "positive trait" I see as sloppiness. You always tell people that they miss your point, did you ever maybe consider that you arent making one to begin with?

I like quake for it's technological aspects, but I dont give a rat's ass about the story. Quake came out and I said "great, a 3D game", and I respect it for it's impact on technology. But it certainly changed nothing in the way we played single player games, but its strive into easier online play is notable.

You talk about Doom's completeness, and that makes quake incomplete? Games can have as many sequels as they want, but if they arent DONE to begin with, then they are just that, INCOMPLETE. I dont eat food that's three quarters cooked, I shouldnt have to play a game that isnt done. Whether its the story, or the game engine.

Quake can be fun, Doom can be fun, but when it comes down to the better game, it's obviously Doom. And if you cant see that (between the revolution into Computer games, the FPS genre as we see it today, or even the inspiration for Quake *which it is*) then you should look a little more carefully.

I'm done with this stupid argument, I have better things to do than counter and be countered every two minutes. I'm too old and rich for this anyway.

      Well phrased!

Actually, here is my take on Doom. Doom revolutionized everything and was the game that put the world in awe.

The graphics don't matter and I enjoyed playing Doom II in cooperative on a LAN, it was a lot of fun and more so that your run-of-the-mill average Quake map.

Truth be told, I don't see much of a reason to compare the two games and say is better than other -- I don't see them as in competition.

But I did run into other games that I liked nearly as much as Doom. Blood was outstanding and Duke Nuk'em I actually liked a lot better than Doom II.

Quake, on the other hand, is unique and unrivaled in the single player aspect -- EXCEPT from a cooperative point of view where Doom II is better for cooperative play than most single player Quake maps (but not all, Insomnia absolutely rocks in cooperative and so does Forgotten Tomb by Trinca).

The multiplayer in Doom II can't be directly compared to Quake, but I'd describe it this way: Doom II has a lot of easy kill weapons that add to excitement in the game. The BFG was fun because every newbie could have his day with that weapon and catch an elite player off guard. And a skilled player loved the supershotgun which could drop-kill a player with no armor in a heartbeat. It was fun chasing around sucky players with Berserk and punching them, heh and humiliating them with that.

Quake, on the other hand, has grenades and the lightning gun which add some incredibly complicated game play ... plus the 3rd dimension. Grenades and the ability to bounce them around corners and thru holes and leave as presents at teleporter pads and airshafting make the dynamics of Quake multiplayer very deep.

Doom better? Quake better? That is in the eye of the beholder and there will always be a lot of different takes on that. There isn't a right answer -- it depends on what you like.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Considering Quake's design documents were written before Doom was considered, and they put it off because they didnt have the tech to accomplish, I call fucking bullshit on your claims of it being merely a 3d test. It was too ambitious at the time, so they settled with Doom which was more appropriate - Doom could compromise in its degrees of freedom, Quake as it was originally designed demanded the 3d technology. However time constraints occured and the game became extremely handicapped due to external pressure.

You are trying make an objective claim to your subjective opinion. The difference is you are saying Doom is better, and I am saying that I like Quake more than Doom. Not that it is better, that I derive more joy from it overall and thus will prefer to play it.
