second quake anyone? - remaking quake in second life

    but for now ill just be remaking items from quake. already got quite a list of items i have done

    made all the keys, and ammo-boxes, all health-boxes, made the exploding boxes, nailgun and supernailgun, and the grenade-launcher. and ive completely remade the skill selection part of the startmap.

    and ill keep steadily remaking more items from quake. ive already remade the lavanails and the multirockets ammoboxes as well, and made a start on the plasma ammoboxes.

    and ive made a very very early start on E1M3. (only part of the first corridor though )

    and im planning to remake all other weapons too. cant decide though which other weapon to remake first.
    perhaps the lasergun, or the rocketlauncher, or shotgun and supershotgun?
    first i made were nailgun and supernailgun which were my alltime faves.

    what ive made so far is the easiest stuff which just used simple basic shapes and were simply made. only simple things left are the other weapons.

    after that itll get a lot harder cuz of the more complex shapes of a lot of the other items. especially the enemies will be extremely hard to make cuz ill need to use sculpties for those and need to work on fixing up all the textures to fit them correctly, which will be a huge task.

      just made another new thing real quickly a bit ago, ive put together a neat skyglobe with the scrolling quake sky

      was looking at the skill selection map i made and thought it would be awesome to also have the quake sky added to it.
      and so i took the sky1 textures from QRP and used them to make a skyglobe with scrolling sky just like in quake, which adds so much to the atmosphere of the map.

      ive also included a free copy of the skyglobes with my skill selection map

      erms, ignore that preview pic and watch the vid. i unno why the f the preview pic has those fucked up colors but it doesnt look like that at all when you watch the vid

        hey all,
        yesterday i got excited after making those skies, and i started building again....

        and i made 3 of 4 power-ups found in quake:
        quad damage, pentagram of protection, and the ring of invibility

        only power-up left is bio-suit, but i am not much of a fan of the biosuit and it will be a lot harder to do cuz of the shape of it,
        so ill leave it for maybe in a later stage, after first remaking all other stuffs


        i showed the powerups to a friend of me and talked a bit with her about quake, i got to think of what i was going to make next, mainly the weapons were on top of my list to do. and after showing her some pics of weapons and thinking a bit, i decided to make MP1's lasergun first cuz i totally love that weapon

          dun dun dun....

          update: im almost done on the lasergun!
          i got the prim-work completely done after sitting down to work on it earlier, all that still needs to be done is do some work to get the texture put on it and then it can be send to get scripted


          the bottom part was a real pain in the ass to try and make cuz of the strange way its shaped and i worked longest on that to try and get all parts how they are supposed to be, but in the end i managed to make it exactly like it is in-game

          tomorrow ill get to slapping the texture on it, had enough of building for today

          btw in case anyone was wondering, its based on OoPpEe's great hi-poly lasergun for MP1 which is included in his amazing MP1 weapon-pack

            and......mhmm..... im sure you can guess what im gonna say

            just now a bit ago... i finished slapping the texture onto the lasergun
            and i made a last-minute change to the button at back on the grip to a shape which better fits then the lame square button i had before
            and i made the lights glow in the dark as well as make the firing-button slightly glow








            i plan on adding a pulsating effect to the lights and make the lights flash rapidly when firing,
            but ill have to work on fixing up a texture so i can make all the lights out of a single prim,
            otherwise they're bound to go out of sync due to lag and such, which would look crappy

            anyways... being done with the modelling part means that the weapon is ready to get scripted

              another update real quick. it isnt big, but it is for me!

              i made a special holding pose for the weapon....
              which is actually the first time in all my years that ive been on second life that i made a animation. so im quite proud of myself of being able to do it, especially so fast.

              asked a friend for some help, and he pointed me to a program which made it really easy to make the pose, and he helped me by telling me how to make it so only the arms get animated and how to make sure no other poses override the holding pose.

              and here's the result which i achieved after an hour of fiddling and testing and trying and testing again and trying again untill it was perfect:


              cant do much more myself since im no scripter, and i know its just a tiny update,
              but for me it was a huge achievement cuz its the first time ever i made a pose for second life

              so now all that has to be done still is add pulsating lights and flashing lights,
              and the rest of the scripting i cant do myself.


              (( btw yeah i know... im a draenei standing on a beach which doesnt really fit, but screw it, its just a quick preview pic ))

                Great Stuff, Splitter! I don't know what kind of model format Second life uses but I bet you could find a converter to turn .mdls into Second Life format. I also don't know anything else about Second Life but I do know a little something about modelling. You should take pics of an (ex) Ogre from front, side and back, then bring those images into second life and position your sculpture between them accordingly. Then you will have a perfect guideline to follow as you sculpt.

                ex: if you were modeling from the front, you would have the front image directly behind your sculpture.

                I don't know how advanced the sculpture system is but if you can make your sculpture semi-transparent (or wireframe with background occlusion) it would be ideal.

                Alternately you could use a real model editor like blender and just export it in Second Life Format. Blender isn't all that complicated. I built a semi-realistic frog as my very first model, within 2 hours. I did everything except rig it.

                Why do everything the hard way with Second Life Model Editor (or whatever), when there are free programs that make life WAY easier.

                  the standard second life building tool uses simple primitive shapes like blocks, torusses, spheres and cylinders which you can modify with dials, like tapering a shape, or cutting a block to be a pyramid or tethrahedron. or you can hollow out a shape to make for example a tube from a cylinder and such. its quite a brilliant building system, but it has its limitations. mainly that itll only be fit to use for items which use simple basic shapes. for complex smooth shapes like for example the quake armor itll be completely useless cuz it cannot be used to make the complex shapes of the armor, and if i tried using the standard building tool itll end up looking like shit cuz you'll see tons of seems all over the item cuz id have to use lots of 'prims' (objects) to make up the complex shapes.


                  second life also can use a special object called a 'sculptie' which is basically a ball which uses a sort of displacement map to turn it into a completely different shape. like the two pieces of cloth which make up the part of my top which cover the breasts are made out of this special 'sculptie' object type.

                  optionally second life can also import collada .dae files. and yes i have indeed thought about converting quake model .mdl files to .dae but id have no clue how to convert them, and when i searched google for a way to convert mdl to dae i didnt find anything.

                  a huge downside of using .dae models is that it cannot be animated, while if one would use the special 'sculptie' object type, and make each body part of the monster seperately, you could animate them in a simple crude way, like simple as in rotating and moving a body-part, or optionally even make the bodypart 'animate' by using several displacement texture maps for different states of the bodyparts.

                  .dae models can however be rigged to comfort to the avatar wearing it, which is great for clothing or such cuz the clothing will bend and twist along with the movements of the avatar (avatar is what a player model is called in SL)
                  so for example for if i ever re-make the quake player armor in SL using .dae models will be perfect for it cuz itll allow the armor to smoothly move along with the avatar movements.

                  but for simple items like the weapons and ammo-boxes which are basically all build up out of simple shapes using the standard sl building tool is the easiest way. everything ive build so far (except pent, which uses a sculptie) i have used the standard SL building tool for, and they look great. and it gives me a lot of fun building them. and a fun way to spend my spare time, which i otherwise would be bored as hell. and i like building and making stuffs


                  but yeah, for the more complicated models i will indeed use either the special 'sculptie' object or use .dae models. i however have little to no experience in modelling with blender. so before i can build these more complex models id first have to sit down and take a few months to learn modelling with blender and how to export them to .dae files.
                  so until then using the standard second life building tool which uses primitive shapes is a great way to build, and the models will look just as amazing as they would when using .dae models cuz im using all the original textures which i ripped from the pk3's of the model-packs


                  anyways, id love to be able to convert mdl to .dae but so far i havent found a way to do so. if you'd happen to know a way to easily convert mdl and md3 files to .dae id love to know

                    Hello splitterface,

                    I must admit I did not deeply read your thread, but saw your last sentence.

                    If you need/want to use the .dae format, then this is the Collada format !

                    Just type into google: "collada md3 converter"
                    You will get many many hits and programs that can do this.

                    My recommendation to use:
                    - Noesis (this beast can do it all and is FREE)
                    - Milkshape

                      EDIT: hmm i just tried opening the biosuit and applied the texture to it, but in noesis the texture doesnt get wrapped around it properly it seems. ill try milkshape instead

                      EDIT2: milkshape worked perfectly

                      i could import it into SL without problems when i used milkshape to convert it to dae, and best of all, it cost me hardly any lindens at all, and its just 6prims

                        another update.... ive also imported OoPpEe's quad damage model into SL
                        quick comparison pic i made:

                        mesh model on left, right is the version made with SL prims.
                        fun fact... the mesh model is just 2prim equivalents, while the prim version is 8

                        pentagram i wont upload the original model since it wont look any better at all compared to the sculptie version i have now.

                        ill update my pack soon and add the bio-suit and the mesh quad damage, but keep the non-mesh version too for people who use a viewer which isnt capable of showing mesh

                          You mean days - it will not take you anything even close to months to learn how to model in blender. You will probably make a pretty good model your first time within just a few hours.

                          I challenge you to go download blender and find an interesting tutorial to follow right now (there are thousands - all free). I think you will realize that you made blender out to be a lot more complicated than it really is. If you can use a mouse and remember like 10 keyboard commands - you can model in blender.

                            yet another update. while im still waiting to get to talk with the friend who scripts everything for me in SL so he can script the lasergun, i decided to make another weapon

                            and i decided to do the rocketlauncher since it would be the easiest weapon to build, and cuz its a totally kick-ass weapon








                            getting the texture correctly on the RL took me a bit of fiddling, but in the end i managed to get the texture perfectly on the prims
                            but now the prim-work (model) is completely done, so its ready to get scripted too.

                            the rocket i had already cuz it fires the exact same rockets like there are also in the ammo-boxes so that saved me the work of having to make the rocket itll fire



                            btw if you look at the weapon it actually looks kinda funny and weird in some parts. I mean the rocketlauncher in general.
                            like i always wondered wtf that weird part at back end with the yellow-ish grate-like part was supposed to be and such. and theres absolutely no way for a rocket to get inside the weapon
                            but ah well, its quake, we're used to that kinda stuff. and it looks cool, and thats all that matters in the end

                                got some stuff i thought all of you might like to see

                                a customer requested me to completely rebuild both E1M2 & E1M3 in its entirety.

                                so far ive come at like... 20% or so of E1M2

                                the entrance hall is completely done including working secret door, but nothing behind the secret door yet.

                                staircase after main plus the small hall after that with the X-bars ceiling is done, and hall after that with the bridge and water is 75% done, only need to add some pieces to the floor and the doorways to the other parts. the sliding double doors to the right after you crossed the bridge are done too, ive even managed to make them open automatically when you get close, and they auto-close again after 10secs. and both the double-doors and the secret door in the main-hall have the original sounds
