  • Duke is back !!

This might sound like a blaspheme here or a too long lasting joke for some, but this is
absolutely real, it's opensource and working terribly well on all modern OS (including 64 bit ones) !

    Come get some !!

    EDuke32 - Duke3D for Windows, Linux and OS X
    engine: quore.free.fr

    Cool.

To hell with the Duke vs Quake thing, that's so last century. Duke is enjoyable stuff in it's own right, and for different reasons to Quake, and there's room in this big world for both of them.

    Yeahhhh, kickin' baby.

Actually, I played Duke almost to the end, where I only played Quake singleplayer mid episode2.

You guys couldn't seriously still have Duke3d already on your computer, or still have the original CD. Unless you paid the 6 bucks on that site. None of those 3 are an option now for me, but i may have something up my sleeve... Haven't played since the mid 90s

I'm glad you guys like EDuke32. Funny to see the mhquake guy comment since I actually used mhquake for a long time ~9-10 years ago when the choices for engines with a lot of new features were pretty much mhquake and tomazquake. I'd also been reading the stuff on that mhquake development blog for a few months recently when I found out about it--some of it is a pretty good read because you clearly know your shit.

Wow Terminix is on our forums. I picked this up today, and it's really impressive. But for some reason Polymer lighting crashes after about 15 mins of gameplay. Eduke32 with HDP and regular opengl works fine for hours...

                        Wonder what i did wrong.

Still have my Duke CDs, and all the expansions too.

Haven't installed them in years though, so I'm looking forward to pulling them out and giving this one a spin. (Also looking forward to seeing if there's any neat code tricks I can steal! )

mhquake: If that blog is any indication, we need to be stealing tricks from you, not the other way around! :p We're not in the best place in terms of rendering performance at the moment, though the old renderer without the lighting and other nicer features still flies. If you try it out and have any suggestions for improving performance we're open to hearing them.

turtlevan: got an eduke32.log? You probably didn't do anything wrong, Polymer is still a bit picky about what video drivers it wants to run with sometimes. It's generally fine on NVIDIA since our rendering guy works there, and the current generation of ATI drivers is reportedly fine, but as soon as you start getting into stuff like the older ATI DX9 cards that don't have new drivers coming out anymore, you run into problems where EDuke32 relies on newer functionality that the driver fails to implement properly or advertises as supported when it really isn't, etc.

Yeah, I have my logs. I found that it maxes my 2GB of system memory until it freezes. Used some versions from march 2010 to 7-19-10 of Eduke. It crashes with polymer on, but doesnt when polymer is off. Ati HD4890. Performance is kinda 'meh' considering that I'm playing Singularity (a 2010 release UE3 game) with 4xAA at my native res v-synced at 60+ FPS. I can also max doom 3 and borderlands.

On the positive, the graphics are amazing. I played the original DUKE without mods and addons to see how improved the visual quality was, and it was impressive. It usually sits around 38 fps at my native res, no aa. Without polymer it's 150-200 fps
