Saw this trailer over the weekend. I'm actually excited - could be the first GOOD fps game to come in years.

Trailers only show what's good in the game sadly. Never fall for them.
I myself am a HUGE Duke fan however sadly I think I may pass on this game. Watch some of the other trailers released in the past 6mths - the gameplay looks very boring. The animations are VERY stiff. You can tell this game was designed for a joystick and not mouse as events that were shown which should of been ALOT faster (like that giant creature throwing things at Duke in another trailer - they were flying at him at what - 10km a hour?). That and the graphics for a game being developed for so long are incredibly dated - HL2 dated. Sure still great - but for how long this game has been in development - it should be groundbreaking; not "passable". I will bring Gears of War 3 for example. It's been in development for 5x LESS time than Duke Forever and it looks better - how is that?

Don't really see how its designed for a joystick when the only version they had before gearbox picked them up WAS a pc version. They had no intention of porting it to consoles until they were sued.

It's subtle things - it's mainly the games speed. Like how fast things happen. Consoles are generally slowed down due to the limited speed of the joystick.
Also Forever has been designed for the consoles + PC at the same time for the past couple years. Was announced back in 2007 that console development started and caused further delays:

So the game has been developed with console gameplay being a big factor.

I have to find the trailer of where Duke is fighting what looks to be a GIANT octobrain - the things it throws are incredibly slow - it's almost like watching gameplay in a rail shooter.

Just because they make console versions doesn't automatically mean it was developed with consoles in mind. I completely understand your skepticism, but (yes i was wrong about the console gearbox thing) but 3DR did develop it for the PC primarily, The decision to make ports was made well into the development cycle already. Those projectiles might be slow, but there are different difficulties - hell, the original is piss easy on the lower difficulties, but one of the hardest oldschool fps games ever on the harder difficulties. And things are done for trailers to show off stuff - like some of the Crysis 1 trailers, they showed gameplay which was shown later that the player had god mode on in one trailer, or was playing on easier difficulties in another.

Now, I'm not saying Its the best game ever, nor should It have taken this long to make (although, realistically, it took however long since they switched to Unreal engine 3) But all the things that make duke, duke - is in the game. The one-liners, mature (or rather, immature) humor, and the violence are all there.


Now, I would like to know - why pass this game up? I could understand if it was entirely different from Duke 3D and what the game was, but It's very much like it IS Duke 3D in a future generation. Yes, it might end up being slowed or whatever, but you can guarantee it won't be as slow as most other console shooters on the market.

And all of the things that were in the original DN3D multiplayer are in here too - except I would like some info on if we get a map editor or not, because 3DR stated several times in the past we would, but Gearbox is running the show now.

I'm going to be honest here, the graphics are CRAP, they're using Unreal Engine 2, why? The storyline sounds CRAP, the animations, guns, models look CRAP. It looks like an 8 year old game with whores and cigarettes. It's got nothing to do with me liking Duke Nukem 3D, this Duke Nukem Forever looks completely crap. When I saw earlier trailers, it actually looked better, Gearbox has obviously nixed it.

I don't need UE3/idtech5 level graphics but the trailer looks really weak and I don't like the whole style of the graphics. And yes, it looks like a console game.

I still hope my impression from the trailer is wrong though. Duke deserves better. I'll wait for a demo or until a friend has it before judging it. But after that trailer I won't pre-order it right now, that's for sure.

It seems DNFs MP is going to be very old school. I find this to be very good news, as it will be similar to playing games like Quake, Duke3D, or UT - which is extremely rare for a game to do in this day and age.

You still get XP, but it goes to customizing your duke, not unlocking new guns or enhancements.

You guys couldn't seriously still have Duke3d already on your computer, or still have the original CD. Unless you paid the 6 bucks on that site. None of those 3 are an option now for me, but i may have something up my sleeve... Haven't played since the mid 90s

actually, i do still have the original duke3d CD-ROM
bought it back when i was 10 or so and still have it original and undamaged

Funny how after 10+ years of hype, DNF has been forgotten about so fast.
I still haven't got it, since... well I didn't want to pay too much for a game apparently so mediocre.
But does anyone know if it's been modded to be more oldskool?
E.g. no health regen or 2 weapon limit?

meh, it got some update but it changes the weapon limit to 4 instead of 2, which is still lame as fuck.

totally not worth it, doesnt make game suck less.

thats cuz its a game that sucks so much you wanna forget it was ever made.
