The New Golden Age of Games?

Actually if I may chime in here, I don't think Grim should get so much flak for his response. QuakeRoot's comment was general but it is fairly angry in it's composition and I can see how someone might take offense to it, the words used in it are pretty radical - and Grims initial post was more defensive - though not the most civil, but QuakeRoot's response wasn't exactly civil either, where he said there's no better way to loose respect for yourself, by doing what Grim was defending.
I'm not trying to take any sides, just pointing out that this isn't a totally one-sided, out of the blue affair.

I'm still shocked there is this much controversy over this. What is so traumatic here?
Someone made a statement, someone else disagreed. There is no real 'winning' on the interwebs. Just A LOT of differences of opinion while everyone (myself included) tells themselves "they are right."
No one *truly* cares unless someone becomes genuinely abusive. I don't see anything truly abusive here.

Golden Age of games...
I use to hang out at the space Station(Arcade) in Anchorage, Alaska back in 1985-1986 and seen a lot of games go from arcade to console which usually only worked well for a few games.
(This is a list of some of the games I use to play constantly while at the arcades which also have console counter-parts)
Mortal Kombat
Snow Bro's
Donky Kong
Hard Drivin'
Kung Fu
Final Fight
Pac Man(Puc Man)
All use to be my favorite machines when I'd go play.
To me the "Golden Age" is long gone with those moments I enjoyed so much.
These days it's almost impossible to see a game with great-awesome graphics with some cool eye catching special effect but completely falls short of any real experience or adventure(Its just a game though right?)
I don't like the idea of arcades being replaced by people who are to lazy to go out and have fun but I'm not against the idea either and I always felt that "People should have these arcades in their living rooms" in a sense..
I miss the "Arcade" days.
consoles are cool... But I miss destroying my opponent then turning around and laughing right in their face arcade style... Its not the same talking sh!t over a microphone or typing your boast.
I don't see a golden age for new games. Not until they become so interactive that you don't need controllers, the experience is 100% in your head and your mind is the controller. thats probably the only thing that will bring back the spirit even if it isn't in the ole arcade style environment.
Some of you might not be old enough to remember arcades from the past where watching Soul blazer on the cabinet was like watching Crysis2 when you only ever used a Pentium 3 to play games from 1999. Simply amazing graphics compared to my home console at the time (NES).
I miss those days.

Again... there is no 'winning' on the interwebs; just differences of opinion and some people who just... can't... let... things go.
Often-times life becomes so much easier when we don't allow ourselves to get sucked into our own pride/dumbass cycle. I've been there many times; I've since let that all go. No point in it.
Interwebs has four things:
Stupid idiots
Witty idiots
Well intentioned but misinformed and confused people
Mature Adults
Witty Mature Adults
Now where do you or I fall into there? Only you get to decide, because it's only your opinion that matters; just... don't expect anyone to care. Especially the internet.Last edited by QuakeRoot; 03-20-2012, 10:03 AM.

Golden Age of Games? Games (Entertainment) are a part of balance, they're not a way of life.
What is a way of life that hasn't been some how artificially enhanced to better suit humans and make their life much more enjoyable?
I can't agree with your statement that games make people dumb.
Games become people's lives every day and that's what they choose to do with their free time. If they have so much free time that they can waste it all on games then the game isn't to blame. That would be like a carpenter blaming the hammer for hitting his thumb.
My grandma was not a gamer, however she spent the last 5-7 years of
her life playing video games... because she was a game junkie? No... Because she had extremely bad arthiritis in her hands and the doctor recommended her to play games to keep the blood circulation flowing to her hands and. Some people don't just play games and some people play games to much.
Usually its the assholes who cry because the game ended in their favor and they didn't get to call in their UBER air strike to further establish their E-dominance... It's "virtual reality" where anyone can be anything.. expect people to want to be assholes.
If PSX-PS3 and all consoles in-between are considered golden I do not agree. To me the golden age started when I was a kid and ended when they destroyed arcades.
Nothing beat watching Tron then heading to the arcade... Or watching the Super Mario Brothers Super Show and playing as Mario himself in Mario Bros(NES) or Duck Hunt!
If anything is making people stupid it is not the games, it's their choices and how they were brought up to be.
Only a fool blames their tools.

friends hung out there, you got a sense of "escaping" from the day to day bullsh!t people went through before there were all the devices today to make people's lives "easier".
I've known about making my own MAME cabinet for years now. But why? My Cellphone can play most games I use to play and my Xbox does the rest. It's just the feeling of the past and remembering all the fun times throughout my childhood I spent with friends/family at the arcade, kind of like why people go to bars to drink instead of getting sh!t faced at home, or clubs, or movies, or anything else that involves people leaving the house for a fun time.

Escapism, inability to deal with life. That's the problem, not games, games are a part of balance, without games, life would become monotony on a stick fast.
Only fools blames their tools, I agree, but fools also limit their tools to only one or two. Narrow their life to wasting time, games, gossip, internet, facebook. There's nothing wrong with using "FUN," but when it becomes your only life, you have no life, just a different form of drug.

Some people making their life "games" and are completely content and happy... and smart AND also very well off.
I just disagree games make people dumb... My little nephew learned to read just so he could play Zelda on the Wii (He played the game non-stop but learned to read for the sake of a game, that took devotion and he knows how to read now, but he doesn't play Zelda anymore. That's just one individual but you can see how there's a good side to people playing games.

Your philosophy on Arcades is nice, but it wasn't mine, make an arcade cabinet or don't. I think the links are a good resource, and a good use of time.

This isn't a difficult concept, life is balance. If someone doesn't want to live a balanced life, that's okay... have fun, go nuts.
An imbalanced life has consequences, that's the point.

the idea is cool on a nostalgia level but nothing will ever replace going to the arcade and whooping people in Mortal Kombat (original)
I've considered opening up an arcade here where I live to give the Job Corp kids and other kids who just run around a place to go. It's not the healthiest of pastimes but it's better then having them run around on the streets looking for "fun".
Arcades were like the first true-life multiplayer games to me. Not just you and your bro sitting in the living room playing Ikari Warriors waiting for mom to cook dinner.Last edited by Phenom; 03-20-2012, 10:26 AM.
