I still love doom 3. I used to hate it, until I actually played the game.

It's not nearly as different from D1/D2 as people made it out to be.

Off-topic, but I really want to see a mod like brutal doom for quake 1.

Now it is clear what to excpect, when we buy this BFG edition.
It seems to be (as you already stated) not really a 'must have' for the ones who have the original D3 already...

Please be more specific. What feature do you want to see in Quake ?
I dont know the "brutal doom" mod. That is why I ask.
As you know, there is this little compilation, that I am working on.
It would be sad if you want a feature for Quake, that maybe is already or can be added/implement into it.
Please explain your request in that thread. I am always asking for further suggestions. So please feel free to say it.

I'm more interested in it from a technical perspective than anything else. The engine is seriously fast; up to 5 times or more faster than the original was. I'd kind of expected that it was going to be faster, but how much faster is a shock. I'm interested in getting my hands on the code to see if my guesses about what was done to achieve this are anyway near the mark.

I wonder, if sikkmod is adapted for BFG edition once the source is out and we can mod it, will it actually run better with all the bells and whistles?

Technically it probably is interesting, agreed. It is also perhaps an upgrade for console owners, just PC players should rather get the original Doom 3 from the local bargain bin and download Sikkmod and Wulfen/Monoxead ultra-hires textures.

Modding is to be expected, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sikkmod etc. updated to support BFG, or alternatively the worthwhile features (netcode...) backported.

TBH I'd rather make my own Doom 3 level than buy this though.

I think for the performance alone it will be worth porting Sikkmod up to it, but that's for Sikkpin to decide. All the same, getting the extra graphical niceties while still maintaining a reasonable framerate has got to be a good enough reason to at least tempt him.

It may also be interesting to see how much mileage there is in backporting the new renderer onto the original engine, but I fear that at least two of the changes (skeletal model animation and shadow volume extrusion) may be incompatible with even the game code.

The thing is that many existing mods probably won't be ported to BFG, and many people are reluctant to even get this new edition.

I'd think twice before requiring BFG edition for my mod. Fortunately, the better mods are already beginning to go standalone so in the end this may not be an issue for the end user.

The GPL release is certainly a nice move, although it somewhat contradicts the apparent business philosophy behind BFG. There are a lot of contradictions in the entire thing. It's unclear who out of id, Zenimax or Bethesda actually pursues which goals here.

Oh well. If this gets a few people to play Doom 3, then I won't complain. The game doesn't deserve half the shit it usually gets.

-> If you can find Doom 3 for little money, or if BFG gets a Steam sale before Christmas, it's worth picking it up and actually playing through to the end. It won't be the worst game you ever played.

When I see the way most Let's Players rush through games that took hundreds of people years to create on Youtube, I'm not surprised.

This was such missed opportunity. Yes, BFG edition improves the game on a technical level, but in every other aspect it takes a step or two backward. IMO, Doom 3 is a piece of art and only had a few rough edges to smooth out and a few dull spots to polish, BFG edition did not do that...in fact it gave it more blemishes.

Why id? What's with all the poor decision making these days? I understand that over time people become uninspired, tired and simply lose their touch, but there is no need to go back and dismantle your achievements and triumphs.

At this rate I'm almost afraid of them releasing Doom 4. I feel at this point that game will be make or break for many id fans.

I tend to agree about Doom3, and so I was thinking to buy BFG (if available drm free)... Now I am a little worried, why do you say that about BFG?

Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil and Doom 2 can be had at amazon.com used for little money. Brick and mortar stores also sometimes have Doom 3 for cheap in the bargain bin. IMHO that's the best option unless you really want to give id some money just to support them.
