If we are talking about Quake 2 engines, Just Jims homepage must be mentioned.

Just Jim is a dedicated collector of many things.
His Quake 2 page shows many engines and gives details.
    My first choice is Quake2XP.
But that is just a matter of personal taste of course.
Widescreen support is a standard feature in these engines.

      @seven

lol thats the page through which i found egl quake2 long ago.

shame a lot of the links on the site are dead now though cuz most of those engines he lists have been abandoned years ago
      .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
      > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

played some q2 a week ago for first time since 2002 lol.. rail arena. Quake2 is just as dead as normal quake, but those tastyspleen server's stay pretty busy, almost like shmack. My resolution was standard 1024x768 but i think i'll mess with it a bit.

@Seven, Nice resource, I'll try all these and see if I can strip them down to get the look I want.

@splitterface, I think this might be EXACTLY what I've been looking for - I tried software mode in 1920x1080 and the image is corrupted...does this happen for you? I'm hoping this is because of my hardware so I have a chance of fixing that issue...If I'm able to than this is all I need. thanks for finding this for me

The source for alien arena is Q2 I think and it has been updated very recently as well. The svn is here

I tried running Q2 with the alienarena engine and it didn't work.

Old versions of FTE have software renderers and should run Q2?

erm, i actually hadnt tried it before in software mode.

but i just did and yeah the colors wer messed up.
turning fullscreen off seems to fix it though.

let me investigate more though, cuz it seems that theres something more up somewhere, cuz it seems its also trying to set color-depth lower i see on my second screen while running it in software mode in fullscreen

hrm couldnt find anything, but then again im not really a expert on those things, lol

perhaps try though to use opengl and enter 'gl_texturemode gl_nearest_mipmap_nearest' in console? mebbe that looks ok to you too?

i dun really know the difference between software and opengl save for that texture filtering, since i personally have always since i first ever played it always played it in opengl mode

or else you can always try running it in windowed mode, that completely seems to fix colors being messed up too from what i could tell
                      .

Ok, so I played Quake 2 for about 3 hours last night using the latest DirectQII that was released yesterday. If you've been wanting to run through Quake 2 for a while, I suggest you give this source port a try, it's great.

As a purist who prefers high resolutions and smooth gameplay with no tacky, game-changing frills, this is exactly what I wanted. I'm really trying not to man-crush too hard on MH, but damn man, YOU DA BOSS.

I want to note, I haven't been able to get the game to appear like software mode using gl_texturemode, but with with the VASTLY improved lighting, it's totally fine.

MH, if you do read this, I'd like to get a list of cvars from you. I'd like to be able to cap/uncap/hide the framerate. It's capped at 83 (Q2 default?) and I get some not-exatcly-micro-stutter...feels like out of sync frames. Vsync "fixes" this, at the cost of lag. I'm hoping capping at 60 will solve this.

Previous experience elsewhere indicates that it's impossible to cap the framerate reasonably without invoking vsync. That's something that really sucks, and it seems to be a technical/OS/driver thing so it's probably not possible to fix in engine code if so.

I went to your blog and took a gander at the cvar list for DQ, hoping some would work with DQII.

cl_maxfps worked like a charm...no micro stutter when capped at 60...uncapping completely, however, makes the game explode.

                            Unfortunately, these don't work:
                            scr_showfps
                            show_fps
                            showfps

As a total shot in the dark, I bound MWHEELDOWN to weapprev and that also worked...so anyone wanting to set up Quake 2 for a good play through, just keep that in mind.

I'm currently about 2/3 through the game with no hiccups to speak of. It plays smooth and looks great (the lighting is so much better). I'm using the unofficial 3.23 patch BTW.

Shit - I forgot to remove the FPS display for release. There's always something.

Pretty sure that Q2 has cvarlist and cmdlist available, and use r_uiscale for the HUD size.
