Thanks -Z-, and yes it looks like you could customize your quake with the id1 folder available which is a good thing I have another question.

Are you able to connect to our usual quake servers (listed in the servers page here) or is it just the ones provided by steam? And if there are steam ones, would we (us being non steam quake users) connect to the steam servers?

There are no server supported by steam, although I'm not sure if they plan on releasing any. I was able to connect to Rage after downloading ProQuake 3.5 and the maps used on the server. I haven't tried any other servers and I'm brand new to Quake 1 so I have no clue as to what to configure for better gameplay, what mods to get, etc.

I enjoyed sucking balls though, I managed to get 2-3 kills out of the 15-20 rounds I played xD

I'd like to know if you have any recommendations as to what mods or engines to use. All I've done so far is take the default game given by steam, and added the maps for the Rage server and downloaded the ProQuake mod/engine/thing. I see Quake World came along with Quake, but it's my understanding that QW is quite a bit different then ProQuake and such, so I haven't really messed with it any.

I'm basically just looking for the mod/engine that is most commonly used to play Quake, and if there are any settings I have to personally change (network-wise for example). Thanks for your help ^^

And Canadian... at least I'm not the only one lol.

proquake is the most commonly used and the most straightforward. stick with it for now at least. if you really like crazy graphics you can look at qrack or darkplaces but they dont really add any gameplay

Things you can customize in the id1 folder are textures, skins, sounds, maps, and other things like menu items. Take a quick look at a short video I made showing off my few months old customized quake setup.

The only mod I'd recommend in CTF since those are the only popular servers that require a mod (it uses 4 .mdl files that aren't provided in quake. you need these in order to play in the server unless you use darkplaces). If you're looking for singleplayer mods and maps, I suggest you look into that section of the forum. The Travail pack looks hot.

You can learn more about QuakeWorld at QuakeWorld.nu

Don't heed that understanding, to a regular user, Quake and QuakeWorld protocols are mostly superficial. If your gameplay experience does not rely on exploiting physics tricks, you will probably not feel a difference. In your case, use both, it only increases the number of servers you can try, and thus the maps and mods (aka, you might be able to play on a map that isn't dm3 and maybe something other than CA). You also meet a wider variety of players.

I personally play with DarkPlaces, it can be graphic intensive - if you wish it to be, but it scales down quite well, and can talk with both normal and QuakeWorld servers.

Just in case anyone was interested. This is what you get when you download Quake from Steam. The default executable is winquake 1.09. As you've all probably guessed, there is no music

ah scratch what I said about winquake 1.09 being the defailt. You get a choice when selecting Quake on Steam. I was using the only desktop shortcut it gave me during installation. Note that the quake shortcuts are retarded. They think steam.exe is on the desktop :/

I was going to say the same, 10 bucks just to see how it is. lol.

I was wondering about this one, seems as a Quake 1 remake with 2001 graphics and HL engine. http://www.steampowered.com/v/index....AppId=40&cc=US, but I did not buy it.

Maybe, CS will take the plunge with this one as well.
