I voted for Free Discussion.
And the fact that we can already BOTH support a free discussion AND prohibit personal attacks means that there is something more important about this poll than the way it's been represented.
Every reasonable person knows that reducing or eliminating personal attacks fosters more fruitful discussions and allowing personal attacks poisons the discussion. And it's easy to spot a personal attack. When someone directs a critical comment to a person's identity or character, it's a personal attack. And when a person directs a critical comment toward what someone does or says, it's free discussion. This much is easy.
So it's not important to have a poll pitting free discussion against personal attacks, what's important is the purpose of this poll. Most are aware of the recent history. And please pardon me for any errors or omissions, because I'm attempting to keep this brief. Kimp had been a long-time abuser on Quake servers and on this site. Many people demanded Kimp be banned. Several polls were taken in which the vast majority directly expressed a desire to see Kimp removed. Master Splinter accused everyone, including the administrators and moderators, of many things from being part of some conspiratorial old boys network to being Nazis. Kimp was subsequently banned from this site. Solecord acted to allow Kimp back onto the forums, dismissing the polls and many people's voiced frustration. This sparked a new wave of protest. Solecord persisted in upholding this decision, while Baker publicly praised Master Splinter's creativity and stimulus in the community. The antagonism escalated. Threads were summarily closed. Kimp was re-banned. And now, out of the blue, we're being asked about whether we want to choose between free discussion and "no drama."
Candidly, in my judgment, this poll represents a ruse to shift blame for previously mistaken policies on the part of administrators and moderators onto the members. So the real issue here isn't whether we should have free discussion or "no drama", but how responsibly the administrators & moderators will honour and support what the members choose.
