My cheapass x1600 does everthing fine (sure FPS could be higher lol!).
Even when I had my old then-top-of-the-line PC which was a x1900+x1950 going in Crossfire I had ZERO issues with any games. Sadly the power supply in that PC blew, and took out the the processor and damaged my RAM and cards in the process.

I have a ATI Mobility Radeon 5870 HD Graphics and, it runs games fine, and it runs quake fine as well. It also handles openGL well too.

I use Ubutnu 11.04 and Windows 7 on my Computer.

could be several things and i hate typing. its a lot easier if i can talk on the phone.

1st thing i would do is download driver sweeper and run it( im sure old nvidia drivers/dlls are still in his system). might as well delete the current ati drivers as well. then reinstall the ati card with newest current drivers. download and reinstall directx just to be sure.blah blah blah blah. call me or i can call you.

is your PSU strong enough to handle it? whats your current PSU and what kind of nvidia card did you have?

              javimars,
I never had an Nvidia card, but I'm getting an ATI 6870, AMD 1090T under Win 7 in the new system I've ordered. I've had issues with ATI drivers on an older system that I keep to play old games which uses an AGP ATI X1650. I'm just not wanting any issues with this new system using the newer ATI card. Hopefully the newer drivers will not be so bad, but I'm concerned as many here claim issues. Any suggestions welcome.
              Thanks for your response.

x1650 was a good card in its day. I have mine still with a replaced fan. ATI cards I think will last a long time you just have to replace the fan when it gets loud as fuck.

I bought a new desktop with an Radeon 6870. I'm running win7 and dx11. So far I've gotten Proquake dx8 4.51 to run and the latest version of directq. However the problem I've been noticing is that when I try and raise my max fps I tend to lag out. My understanding is that the higher your fps the more data you have to transmit to the server which in turn lags me out. So if this is the case how can I find my happy medium?

                    start at 400 rabbit.

I've found this to be a great rounded off number.adjust your sensitivity afterwards as well.

I personally can't do any higher than 400 on most server's,as my connection is rather limited, although "top" of the line around here. (I want ATT Uverse. The cheapest Uverse package = Faster than the most expensive current service = at a cheaper cost.

It all depends on your connection speed, so the only real way is to pick a number then dial it up or down until you find what works best for you. Connecting to a server that nobody is currently playing on can help a lot here as you'll be free to test things without anyone disturbing you (or without you disturbing anyone). If you do that you might want to then drop the number you pick a little so as to give yourself some headroom for when things start getting busy.

Alright I am home now and on most servers i ping 50-70 and so 400-600 fps is manageable. However my mouselook won't work all of a sudden. Any ideas?
