Axe is an underarm deodorant in most of Europe!
Vim sounds like a cleaning product!
Tremor does not sound too impressive and also gives me the image of that cheesy horror movie!
Quake is something that describes an earth shattering event!
The name is extremely important, it should be catchy, something large sounding and easy to google/spell for website address.
Blasted, Impact, Shattered, Aftershock,
or maybe pick some lovely Cthulhu monster instead, as it should be Lovecraft inspired in art style!
I completely agree with you Sock, I couldn't have said it better. I'd thought about a Cthulhu monster name... some of them are very long, convoluted or just plain weird. There are a few cool ones, here is a fairly comprehensive list, if any of them stick out to anyone - Please Comment - It's all of your input that will make this project great.

This is actually a great suggestion, "Free" emphasizes it being Open Source, "Q" is a nod to Quake, I like it. The phonetic sound "Freak" - can be a reference to the hideous monsters fought; & sometimes a hero feels like a freak, Heroes often feel lonely after the deed is done.
Anyone else have feelings for this name, or an idea from it?
I'm also partial to: Iconic Idea
It rolls off the tongue.
Though that might be a bit cheesy.

Warning: Most modders associate "free" = dog poop.
Your project will need a message and the ability to recruit people. The name doesn't matter as long as the name doesn't do damage.
I would offer the idea that putting the word "free" in the name would do a significant amount of damage. You are saying the primary characteristic of the project is that it is free.
Which implies ... "The only redeeming characteristic of this project is that it is free; in all others way this project is pale imitation of what it intends to replace".
I think you would have difficulty recruiting for a project with such a subliminal message. A project must project that it intends to do a high quality job of what it aims to be.
"Open" does not have the same negative connotation as "Free". "Open" is more of a concept.
/One opinion, maybe even wrong ...
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I always appreciate your input Baker. I do see what you mean.
My favourite name for a quake project so far has to be that of AMFQuake (fuhquake with a few new particle effects etc).
AMF stands for Add More Frogs.
While the thought of substituting the word quake with a single q letter is in our minds, I quite like fuh quake's name also.
Which kinda goes to show that names don't really matter.
Have some fun with it, you might as well. If its memorable, it'll be remembered.
If its a random collection of letters then you might get a few people interested in what it means, but they have to actually care about your project for them to actually care about the name.
The mission statement is often more important, and will often inspire people more than just the name. Stick to your goals and people will know what to expect.
'free' is ambiguous. It either means free as in freedom where you can do what you want but you'll have to wade through 500 pages of manual to figure out how to use the damn thing because there's no sane default behaviour forced upon you, or its free as in shovelware that is either crippled so you buy the full product, or free as in supported by advertising, or free as in 'we couldn't make money from this even if we tried'.
Steve is a fairly bad name, I suppose.
'Bob', that's a much better name.
And since you (QuakeRoot) asked, nothing really inspires me any more.

Name's do matter, anything "Quake" in the name is a no-no. FuhQuake as far as I know is just an engine, and the goal of QuakeRoot is to supply a 100% replacement vehicle thats offered for free 100%.
This might anger the Id/Bethesda gods in of itself alone, regaurdless of name.....

Open Arena is straight up Quake 3 with all replacement content. They will be fine with any legit total conversion that follows the rules. (Other examples: Urban Terror, Xonotic, Nexuiz, World of Padman, Warsow .... probably many other examples).

Give me some mission statements.
You're right, Bob is much better than Steve.
I'm sorry nothing inspires you, you inspire me.

Project: E1M1
Evil Koala Quark
Dark Bob - (my favorite so far )
Quickly Quantify

Great Galloping Frollicking Fafnir
Wait a second... this is a completely new game right? If I read the other thread correctly it's not a Quake related game at all, is it? Quake and the Quake/Mod community are just the inspiration, no?
If that's the case we can be creative with naming without trying to be Quake'ish!
Name's damage_inc, and killing is my business. Don't worry though, it's nothing personal! Oh wait... maybe itis
