Frenzy, to get back to the original post, I like the idea of a little more possitivity in the site my friend. It seems a sensible way forward and it would be good to see some more comeradery and good natured, sportsmanship return to the game with players showing respect for each other in game and by extension here on the site.

Perhaps more emphasis on the recent acheivements of possitive influences like Oppee, Rook, Seven, MH and Baker might help attract ppl to the site rather than repel them with negativity.
Perhaps an "idiots guide to... " various quake activities might be good "sticky" threads. E.g. a simple newbie friendly guide to pimping your quake using different textures and skins,
    mod reviews, etc.
I appreciate the free speech principle but I think it was Rook who, in his usual entertaining but concise way, suggested that just because you can say whatever you like on this forum doesn't necessarily mean that you should. The idea of having a dedicated area or a means of quckly identifying the more "negative" or abusive postings can be a) contained and read by those that are interested and b)easily ignored by those that are not, could work very well. I'm sure there are some that enjoy, and indeed thrive, on this kind of enagement but clearly it's not for everyone and one could take the view that their patience has been sorely tested.
[Edit: after wading through some of the other threads some of this appears to have already happened so keep up the good work ]

    Kind regards

    Monty
I agree with you Monty, people should have some self control when they are posting abusive and negative stuff, but the internet provides free filters for foul language to be censored, and this site has an option to ignore users if any of their post offend them. It should be user choice. I think net nanny would be a good choice for the more sensitive users, however not free, but a free add-on from firefox for censorship would help. just some suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions Ninja, let's hope that a little self control and maturity will negate the need

What, really? I can ignore users so their posts never show up for me? How?

I'd instantly put like 20 people on my list.

          Hi GB,

Go to your user cp > Settings and options from the down menu > Edit Ignore list > Enter the name of the person you want to ignore in the "Add a Member to Your List... " field then click okay. This should then hide the response content rather than the response in its entirity for all users you specify. It's not ideal but it's a start.

          Hope this helps

You could simply ignore their posts by not reading them as well.

Damn, I read your reply accidentally Foq. My eyes.

Thanks, Monty. It's awesome; with just a handful of people on the ignore list, there is so much less spam to wade through when reading the forum.

Now if they could just be banned instead of just ignored, that'd fix things for real. Ah well. Ignoring will do.

if this site starts rating people like tv/movies does, then i would be nc-17 or TV-MA. Use your judgement before consorting with me. *period* I carry a warning label ready.. But i still think users should be the ones that have the user side choice on how to deal with this situation.

                      Google rules.

                      - A TV-MA rating means the program may be unsuitable for those below 17.

                      - Rated NC-17 (No One 17 And Under Admitted)

This is going to turn into 4Chan. By the way, oddly enough Frenzy's done nothing to offend me. And I agree with him, this community is going downhill.

Agreed, at least to a point but the addition of a few tools to help automate that process probably wouldn't be a bad thing. I get the impression most us are old enough to deal with reading a few posts with "colourful" teenage language but would only really feel it's worth doing so when it's constructive and there's no better way to express your point with a view to reaching a consensus of opinion.
Looking at some of the comments on this and similar topics it would seem it's probably more a case of some users wanting to read interesting quake news without having to wade through the chest beating that seems to have got the focus more recently. But hey, I'm just a sad old skooler and could easily have misunderstood so what do i know
Perhaps if a thread could be tagged in some way or moved to an appropriate, but still public, sub forum when it deteriorates in to a flame fest or just serves to reignite the same old arguements, then it may solve both problems. Those that want to flame and argue can still do so quite freely, those that want to focus on the other more possitive facets of quake can also do so. Maybe in tandem with this, have a filter checkbox available on the "New Posts" listing to allow users themselves to instantly include/exclude these kind of posts at the click of a button. I've coded similar things in .Net in a matter of minutes so it can't be that difficult to accomplish. Perhaps then, everybody would be happy.

I'm not saying this is the answer, and if there are better suggestions then let's have them. It was just a well intended suggestion to help refocus some of the aims of the site

I think it's normal for forum software to have an ignore feature, although this is the first time I actually use it.

Alternatively, admins could ban about 6 people and remove 90% of the crap. Sounds like an awesome deal to me. But hey, I'm used to internet forums where you can get permanently booted *just* for being an ass. Imagine that.

Our hippie admins have a very liberal definition of free speech. "Everything is great, man. We're all brothers." Except we're not. And this Kimp guy, the ridiculous anticheat argument and the general violent, irrational drunken shit-slinging is your Altamont.

Banning people who just want to stir shit, or locking their threads, is not "nazism", it is necessary to keep a society functioning.

Free speech seems to be confused by some with anarchism, which is what they truly want. But anarchism only means that the most aggressive people get the upper hand. Anarchism is inherently unstable, because it soon turns into gang warfare and warlordism. Which reminds me of the vocabulary that's recently in use here - "guerilla warfare" etc.

gb, that mentality is probably the #1 reason why forums split. I've seen it happen numerous times in various communities.

You simply cannot strong arm your members when its so easy to start up new sites.

Also, I'm surprised the guy who says he admins a wiki mentioned those examples. Clearly he does not know the history of wikia and wikkii.
