gb, that mentality is probably the #1 reason why forums split. I've seen it happen numerous times in various communities.

You simply cannot strong arm your members when its so easy to start up new sites.

Also, I'm surprised the guy who says he admins a wiki mentioned those examples. Clearly he does not know the history of wikia and wikkii.

Admin experience is admin experience.

And really, I'd rather have a forum split because of a few whiners than have said whiners take down a forum because they won't shut up. That way, the whiners can circlejerk themselves all they want and let people from the original forum stay in peace. For a small community like the Quake 1 community, having the whiners exile themselves and whine on their own small forum is a lot better than have them ruin one of the few remaining active Quake 1 sites out there.

let's say you're someone that's rediscovered Quake 1 after many years and you wanna see if there's any cool stuff for it. You google search Quake, and you end up here. You start looking through the forums to see what's going on today with Quake 1, and the "Quake Central" forum is flooded with Magnus, Omri and the others whining and jerking each other off while saying they're "true Quake patriots" or whatever. I'd say "fuck this", grab all the cool stuff on the "finished releases" forum, and never come back.

That's exactly what admins and the like don't want. It stifles new users and veterans from participating and instead turns the forum into a whine-fest for people who will never be happy something in Quake 1.

I'm sure the management of wikia would strongly disagree with your view in hindsight, but before wikkii's emergence they probably shared your view point.

There are in fact at least 3 quake 1 forums, probably more. Quakeone.com may not be the one someone new finds. The others are less professional, less popular and less organized. The inactivity of them is enough reason to turn someone away.

Splitting this forum would also lower the activity of an almost dead community into near terminal levels.

Your post history indicates that you've taken zero participation in any threads that you seem to dislike so much. It seems like you are the one who is just taking this opportunity to jump on the complaint bandwagon.

This forum, going back prior to your registration, has had many big topics. Kimp, DM3, CAx/DM, Trucks, etc.. where people from both sides have contributed.

If you are so thin skinned as to be turned off by conversations that aren't all roses, butterflies and fairy tails than a forum about a game where you shoot each other in the face with rockets and than watch the corpse explode into blood and guts is probably not for you. The disney forum is probably more your style.

If all you are looking for is the finished releases, then what you're looking for is a wiki. From what you say about your background it seems you would favor wiki's over community forums anyway.

I certainly do not want to see this site become a wiki of information at the expense of losing the community discussions.

I do not want this website to be just info. What I'm trying to say that if a whole website is filled with mean-spirited people, nobody's going to want to go there. Why sign up and post something like "hi i'm new here! I wanna play online with you guys! I sure loved this game when I was a kid! " when everybody is at each other's throat? If the community is filled with so many jerks, then why bother signing up in the first place?

I'm not saying we should all be be hugs and nice forever. There's a place for legitimate negative discussion, like how dm.quaketx didn't have any anti-wallhacking measures until a day or two ago. What's not okay is constantly bitching and complaining about everything. That just aggravates users and puts them off from chit-chatting about Quake.

You may be able to deal with constant whining, but others aren't. An admin's job is to keep the peace and be a constructive force for the community as a whole. If people are constantly shouting and flaming each other, then an admin needs to come down and calm everybody down in order to keep the peace. You don't sit on your ass and say "oh well it's not that bad they'll sort it out" because it can and usually escalates more and more, like it has recently. The whole point of admin tools like banning and deleting flamewars is to give people time to cool-off and (hopefully) come back as more constructive users.

Also, the reason why I'm participating because I'm a bystander that's getting sick and tired of the constantly flaming and whining in this forum. This place is packed with neat conversations and useful info, and it'd be a shame to have it all go down the drain because a handful of users won't stop whining. Just because I wasn't here for things like kimp's glory days doesn't mean that I can't give my opinion. It's a forum; anybody can contribute.

Honestly, if you are this upset about what's going on, just voluntarily leave Quakeone for whenever amount of time or even start your own forum. If you think there's a problem in the Quake community or whatever, be a part of the solution instead of creating flamewars. If you think this community is shit, go to another one or start your own. "Community unity" doesn't mean much when most of the users are tearing each other apart.
