The main topic of the following arguments is the Demoman class and the use of the weapons available to him, except for grenades.
There seems to be some arguments floating around that using a 255 second detpack is somehow 'cheating'. Let me clarify the situation, it isn't. Detpacks currently come with 3 preset times that can be bound to the key of your choice. The TF documentation also contains the instructions on how to vary the detonation time to whatever you wish in the same way it also allows variation in the scouts scanner range. It isn't cheating to vary the time of a detpack as the option is expressly condoned and explained by the creators of TF in the manual. To quote the manual "The demoman can use preset timer values using the +det5, +det20, +det50 aliases, or the demoman can specify the exact amount he wants to use. See the Pre-Impulse section below for details on how to do that." unquote, this is clearly an endorsement to use it as you will. To claim that it is a cheat or somehow not in the spirit of the game is simply a misguided opinion. You may not like 255dets but your dislike doesn't make using it a cheat.
The same goes for blocking ladders/exits with 255dets, that's not a cheat either and it's not 'gay'. It is simply making use of the demoman classes abilities to defend his base. Using Dets to block ladders etc isnt a new event, if the TF designers had wanted to they could have changed the detpack into an object that DIDN'T block movement in any of the versions they produced and did they? No. If your class cant disarm or remove detpacks then either go as one that can, get one to help you or -Heaven forbid- go another way. Most of the 'problems' associated with 255dets seem to be more related to map design than anything else. For example there are few (if any) useful applications for a 255det in Well6 but Bam4 and 2fort5 have several.
Now on to Pipe usage. If (for example) you keep walking over pipetraps every time you go via the 2fort5 spiral then maybe your tactics suck. Its no use complaining that the demoman is gay or lame. WTF do you think yellow pipes are for? The same goes for a demoman firing 6 redpipes at a target to kill it, I have heard players call this spam. Spam? Is firing 4 rockets at a target spam? The demoman has a magazine of 6 pipes, for those who would say 'spam' this means he can fire a maximum of 6 pipes before he must stop to reload. No one in their right mind would accuse a soldier of spam for emptying his 4 rocket magazine at a target so why accuse a demoman because he empties his 6 shot magazine at the same target? To accuse someone of 'spam' because they used their main weapon the way it was intended to be used is a bit stupid don't you think?
As far as I know the only 'official' definition of spam is on the Otfcr
website. Read it and you'll find it refers only to gren2s and then only when using them in your own base. This is intelligent and reasonable otherwise napalm, gas, and mirv spamming would be epidemic.
A word on ingame whining. Speaking for myself I find it hard to credit much of the whinging I see in TF games mostly because its almost exclusively done by some of the most highly skilled players. They get repeatedly killed by pipetraps and its 'gay', an enemy attack player chases them and takes em out and its 'gay', they die by an unexpected attack or are tricked and -you guessed it- its 'gay'. Is that a reasonable view or just the complaints of someone who is annoyed?
