Cheese, Ice Cream, Cookies, And 2Forts?

by Vorro, 9/20/98
Whenever my mom drags me to the grocery with her (i know, its sad that im 18 and she still manages to drag me there sometimes)... i notice a very disturbing thing. We walk down the cheeze aisle... all you can see is nothing but cheddar, swiss, jack, and mozzarella. There's no edam, brie, parmesan (except the grated shit), anything different is damned to rot in the overpriced foriegn foods section, where nobody ever shops anyways. We walk down the Ice cream aisle, and everywhere you look, its nothing but bloody chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. sure, there are rare traces of different flavors scattered about... but not many, as few people ever buy it. One look down the cookie aisle and its nothing but damn chocolate chip or oatmeal... and all the infernal spawn of chocolate chip... of which, the only good one is chewy chips ahoy... but you already knew that.
I come home... and i get on the net and get gamespy running... and i see a very disturbing sight. One good look shows 2forts almost all the way down. Theres one server running rock1, another running rock2, one more with analzone (mispelling intentional), a couple of hunted maps, and one server is actually running 32smooth. But, we've seen these maps already... where are the new maps that have been made? where is the new stuff to add to the variety? I'll admit that i can enjoy 2forts, but hot damn it, im tired of it all the time. If i was a server admin i would never run 2forts... just as if i was a farmer i would learn how to make something other than that infernal cheese quartet and ice cream triumvirate... and as a baker i would put nuts and other strange things into my cookies... but alas, i have niether the time, nor opportunity to do such things... and i am left at the mercy of the Manufacturers who believe that these unoriginal flavors are all we ever want and need... and at the same time, we are left at the mercy of server admins, who either love 2forts to death (like Hal claimsto do) or, dare I say dont seem to have the balls to run anything else in fear of not being a popular server.
If you fall in the first category, then i don't really have anything to say to you besides i hope you feel better someday :).
Now for the second group. I understand that without the servers, we would have no game to play... but damn it, we have several hundred servers out there, and about 85-95% run 2forts... people like me cant afford to admin a server (or just dont have the connections), and our voice asking for servers running new maps seems to go ignored constantly... I don't make maps, but from my POV it seems that mapmakers undertake a very unfulfilling and thankless task when they put hours and days into making a new and groundbreaking map that is never played... If this keeps up, i'm sure we'll eventually run out of creative mapmakers quick, and the ones that remain will simply crank out 2farts clones.
If you make it they will come... and i'm serious. If one server admin would just set up a server that ran a map like colony, i would love you. There are so many good maps out there, but nobody knows about them cuz few servers take the initiative to play them. And i see this happening in TF2. Every time i play starcraft, everyone plays the same damn map, and if i try to start a new game on a different map, nobody plays. It happens in many games.

In closing, I WANT SOME VARIETY!! :)
Thank you.
Vorro

2Fort5

by blsteven, 9/20/98
This may be as wise as messing with a baby bear, but I surmise that PUBLIC (mind you) 2Fort5 games are nothing but Quake DeathMatch with classes. It's not about working with your team to cap the flag, it's not about team communications to overwhelm the enemy's attempt to ravage your base. It's all about violent revenge.
Almost every time, one team gets loaded with a bunch of snipers who think they are SierraHotel. Unfortunately, then usually end up cannon fodder. How many times have you visited the Nest to see 3 snipes, running around like chickens with a fox in the house. *Sigh*, I've given up on warning them that a evil medic, spy, whatever has slipped up the ramps and is going to splatter them. Why bother, they didn't warn the defensive players that "Gee, someone made it across the bridge, because I missed, uh ... I was too busy dodging incoming ordinace."
Lots of team members get distracted with killing someone back than acting as a team. When this happens, everything breaks down, similiar to grade school kids without the teacher in the room. Remember substitute teachers? *big grin* The flag is merely a guise, a distraction, something to do when you want to "really shine", I propose let's cut the Bull and Demand 2Fort6. And call it (map) for what it really is... DEATHMATCH! [shudder] Loose the flag, loose the ramps, loose the nest, shoot, loose the bridge, let the killing be quicker and quicker, running is just a waste of time. Throw in the teleporters! I pray to God that Public TF2 has something better to offer. ]Sand[Man (Public 2Fort Hater *with option of future opinional change*)
