The advantages of such a defence are simple:-Especially in narrow passes an enemy can be held up indefinitely, as he cannot throw his entire army into the offense-In most maps the natural features will be expecting such a defense: natural features will therefore always be favourable to this defence. The disadvantages will also be clear to the reader:- An enemy might choose, if the area is suitable, to simply circumvent your defense. -In large maps your line of defense can be really thin. To illustrate: try to defend a mile-wide postion with five persons.-If the enemy breaks through in the base the outer wings of your flank troops will not be able to do much about it. I will not mention any specific battles here, as this is the most natural and classic form of defense there is: most battles had elements of this in it. World War I can serve as an example of a war fought from position defenses. |
