Usual advice applies if a mod doesn't work with DirectQ; make sure that it's set up properly by following the steps in the readme, and check it in another engine to try help with isolating the cause of the problem.

You can also use the Options menu to select a game directory instead of using -quoth (bonus: if it doesn't display in the Options menu then it's not set up properly so that's what the problem is.)

It said that it also requires -hipnotic in the command line. Following the installation instructions, it fails to load in DirectQ
( place inside \Quake\quoth , run with variables -hipnotic -quoth )

It's even showing up Quoth turned on,inside the options/gamedir changing sections, reads Quoth as you suggested, but still breaks upon attempting to load ne_tower.bsp

      perhaps im still missing something

It's okay,it's become the expected results of playing and dabbling with newer clients, even today. Greener pastures ahead im sure though.

Standing at the bottom, looking up. You may need to move around a little to find the spot that really crushes performance.

Timedemo demo2 does 1135 FPS in the RMQ engine, by the way.

                        It runs on that?

Wow, I must have done a better job than I thought.

It actually runs better on that than any other Quake client I've tried.

                            540 fps on demo 2
                            640x480 16bit everything off.
                            1600x1200 was about 525 fps

                            AMD 64x2 4400 2GB pc3200 ram
                            ATI Radeon4850 1GB

                            Edit^^^
JoeQuake and DP actually run great at 1024x768 on a Voodoo 5500 AGP. RTL on DP kills it though.
DirectQ wont run on WIN98 though ;-)

A deliberate choice which also happens to be influenced by a number of technical issues, not least the fact that the minimum D3D9 version required for DirectQ (it's shaders won't work otherwise) isn't available for Windows 98.

The fact that I don't have a Windows 98 machine to test on is also important here.

I suspect from the framerate you got from the 4850 that either (1) you're using 1.8.666b, which is a bit of a ****-up and has several performance issues, or (2) using 16bpp is not very friendly to your GPU, and if you switched to 32 you'll actually go faster. You should really be timedemoing around the 1000 fps mark with that card.
