    UPDATED this post on 10th.07.2011

    Now all animations are done.
    - Ancient ghost of the fallen
    - Vengeance of the deceased

    Dear all,

I took your feedback and suggestions from the WIP thread and this thread very serious and updated this animation to fulfill your demands.

Most of you said, this animation looks boring, has the wrong sounds and is more or less useless. I picked that up and searched for improvements.

This is what I finally implemented (in order of appearance):
    - winged-demon fades in above the corpse (aligned to face towards player)
    - rising evil-particles appear
    - corpse overbrights
    - 2 different animation are spawned randomly:
A: winged-demon flies upwards and carries the soul with him
B: winged-demon flies upwards, attacks the player and carries the soul with him
    - soul and winged-demon start to fade out
    - until they finally vanish in a cloud, that slowly disappears
    - 5 lightning strikes appear from within the cloud (4 of them in random direction, 1 straight down)
    - Beware, if you stay too near, the lightning strikes will hurt you ! (of course adjustable via cvar)

You have these cvars for this efect:
    - "souldamage" [0,1] if you can to receive damage or not (from cloud & winged-demon)
    - "soulattack" [0,1,2] depending on which animation you prefer
"0" = only the animation without attacking spawns
"1" = only the animation with attacking spawns
"2" = random animation with or without attacking spawns (50/50% chance) == default

The damage of the clouds lightning strikes is randomly 2 or 3 (if you stay too near)
The damage of the winged-demons lightning attacks is 1 (if you stay too near)

I had this in my mind during development:
The pitiful souls of the enslaved have not suffered enough
Now, that the evil monster has been killed by the brave player,
the evil winged-demon manifests to tear out the condemned souls and
drag them into a parallel world, full of pain and horror.
For a split second the door to the terrifying world is opened,
and screams of unthinkable torture and grief echoes through
just before the dimension gate closes again for eternity,
leaving behind deadly lightnings of sore to warn the careless ones.

Thank you all for your feedbacks, helping me to finish this animation.
I hope the Final-2 version can meet your expectations.

It is fully integrated in the small mod compilation.
    (together with the 3rd animation).

Please feel free to use the souls.qc in your own mods.
Please read included documentations for details.

Unfortunately the particles and effects are not properly visible in the youtube clip, but nevertheless I linked one to give you an idea:

    Kind regards,
    Seven

PS: I work in parallel on the 3rd animation (vengeance of the enslaved), which is in a prefinal state now. I found a totally new idea to bring back the shocking moments to the player, but dont want to spoil the surprise now.

      Hi Seven,

It's clear that you have put a lot of work in to that and the results are of a high standard as always. Personally although the rest of it looks very good I'm not sure the wings bit work for me, but I'm sure the DP users will get a kick out of them.

Just as an idea, but my kids were watching the old 1990 film "ghost" today and it got me wondering: If you ever revisit this in the future I wonder if it might be possible to consider whether the souls, newly released from their tortuous lives, would be keen to enjoy their freedom instead of just being passively dragged off to presumably their eternal damnation in hell

Try 1 hour 39 mins into this film to see the sort of thing I'm talking about
      .
I think there's another example at 1:52:10 but he doesn't resist his fate as much - What a girly! .

Like I said, it was just an idea, please take it in the same well intentioned way it was given

Keep up the good work Seven.

      Kind regards
      Monty

Hmmm.. After watching the vid I think a winged demon will look better carrying the soul instead of simple wings.. Just a suggestion Seven..

          Hi Seven,
Wow, I was beginning to wonder what you were going to decide about this mod. I have a question. Will the sound of the wings and the tortured scream at the end also be adjustable via cvar?
Thanks for all of your hard and dedicated work!
          Regards,
          Jeff

Well doing the whole demon carrying them away would be easy to do, just make a demon model in the position of lifting something (from its legs like a bird of prey) and replace the present model. It however would look odd with the spirit spinning though.

So what about if the winged demon spins too?

Seven you should try a simple but nice touch from Quake 2 for a death effect - fly's
Corpse on ground, after 15-30 seconds flys appear (simple black dot particles or sprites)

Nice idea! Did you ever played "Clive Barker's Jericho"?
The game has that death effect..

Could it be possible to have just wings without the corpses ? I don't like very much these statics bodies that turn around like piece of dead wood.

                      Great work Seven

Off topic: are you using an improved dog model?
Sorry if my english isn't clear, is not my native languaje.

                        Dear all,

first of all, I want to thank you for your honest replies.

It is my second attempted for this effect and the second flop.

But hey, I learned a lot QC during its development.
So I take this as a good side effect.

I have no idea what to do with it now...
Unfortunately I have no animated demon model, nor anything else to replace the wings.
Even without them (as my attemp 1 have been) it was a flop.

I think we should skip it and I should concentrate on the last effect:
                        vengeance of the enslaved
Hopefully this will meet your expectations a little more.

Fortunately you can decide via cvar which effect to use for which enemy in the compilation.
So you can avoid this one

Thank you again for your feedback.
It is really important for me.

                        Kind regards,
                        Seven

PS: Arioch, no it is the ID1 model with a mixture of different High-Res textures on it.
If you are interested, feel free to PM me.

I liked the first version better than this version with the wings. Would it be possible to "shrink" the body while it rotates? Turning & shrinking, exploding, gone. Or maybe Turning & expanding, exploding, gone? Both without the wings of course.

                            Hello,

I should have know myself better....

I couldnt sit still, until I pulled my last card.
Too many hours have been spend in this little thing to throw it over the board.

So, please give me one last chance.

I made a new youtube movie with 4 different clips:
                            1.) Standing "demon" without rotation
2.) Standing "demon" with slow rotation
                            3.) Flying "demon" without rotation
4.) Flying "demon" with slow rotation

Please tell me, if you think one of them is good.

Thank you very much for your feedback on this new clip.

                            @ grave_digga

I had this scale idea in my mind since the beginning.
Also Nahuel suggested it to me via PM.
                            The positive:
DarkPlaces gives as a function that can do exactly this: DP_ENT_SCALE
                            The negative:
It is not possible to make a fluent animation with it.

The scaling seems to need a lot of cpu usage, and therefore there is a clearly visable jurking/jittering in the animation.
So I had to drop this idea.

What I can do for you is this:
I can add a cvar to enable/disable the "demon" and leave the rest as it is at the moment.
Please tell me what you think about the new movie clip in this post.
                            Can you accept it ?

                            Kind regards,
                            Seven

Sad to hear that it is not possible. Well if i had to choose from those 4 animations i think number 3 is the best. This without the demon will look nice, maybe white lightning (shambler style).
