If it was intended as a SP map you likely have the skills to port that old mario bros hidden coin block
Make the only way up by having to jump from one of the debris piles and trigger a new platform or tele or whatever,You could make it even more entertaining if you use a hidden tele to drop the player from above right back down to the bottom, unless he exits the tele at an angle or something.
I always look for a way to jump from one tele to another to make a hard target like on aerowalk, its quite fun.
Wish I was home to enjoy this with all of you,Just keep it all going till I can get my hands on my RL!!!

Should I attempt to finish this map?

If I do resurrect this unfinished map, is there at least one of you with some radiant skills that will be willing to help me?

If I get a few yes's to at least the first question I will revisit this map as an SP.

I have a lot of maps on the shelf - I know how it is. I look at things sometimes too and ask myself if I should finish them.

You need to find it in yourself to finish something.

As you know, I will answer any Radiant or mapping question if I can. I can't really do brushwork for you though, but perhaps that is not what you meant.

I'll merge and reopen the old thread.

edit: I'll change the title if you want, too.

@ - I have a lot of maps on the shelf - I know how it is. I look at things sometimes too and ask myself if I should finish them.

There was a bunch of that but I was also wondering where the epic war was that made me stop making this map. (lol) I thought really hard back in time to this. Was this a delete the war session? That doesn't fit cause generally I'm the only one deleting and there is no negative posts in this thread. So, my only conclusion is that there was no war, I just stopped and I have no idea why.

@ - You need to find it in yourself to finish something.

No doubt, but if there is seriously no one here that has any interest in seeing this map finished then I wont waste my time.

@ - As you know, I will answer any Radiant or mapping question if I can. I can't really do brushwork for you though, but perhaps that is not what you meant.

Well, you know I don't need you to answer any radiant questions (q1 style) I could write a book on it inside and out but, I guess you can say I expect you to do what you did in this thread all along. If you go through the posts one of them said (basically) I would be open to brushwork help that an intermediate radiant user wanted to give, and that you were not allowed to help in that way because you are too good. Basically, I was repeating that sentiment in my last post.

@ - I can't really do brushwork for you, though.

We've already established that you are too good to help but, I am curious as to your reason behind this.

@- I'll merge and reopen the old thread.

Thanks , I was sad it was closed. It felt like it was taken away from me. I'm not saying it was. I'm sure inaction over time closed it due to some scheduled task in the forum software.

@ - edit: I'll change the title if you want, too.

Not necessary. I'm thirsty right now (lol). If you remember (or recently re-read) I named this thread this cause I was thirsty when I started this thread and I didn't have a map name at the time. The maps last established name was Parkour due to the "obstacle course" feel I was going to create. There is no reason to believe or understand this but, I have grown much as a mapper by not mapping at all. Just like I grew as a musician by putting down the guitar for over a year. I believe it has something to do with simply growing as a person period and then when you pick "whatever" back up you have a different view and feel than when you last put it down. I could write a book on radiant and I could write a book on music theory. These things have been true for a long time so, whatever reason that I'm better at these things has nothing to do with knowledge. Basically I'm just rambling away at the fact that I'm not gonna make a map where you have to skillfully jump all over the place just to play, so Parkour is not going to be the name, and that means I'm back to no name, so the title is fine. Oh wait, yeah you can change DM to SP, other than that the title is fine.

Edit: Maybe I dumped this map because the lights were seriously pissing me off. We have some better light tools now and I intend to use them if I revisit this map. I follow both of your blogs and always have. I don't participate cause I'm not really sure what to say in response to your posts. My MO is generally to add critique but you are awesome at this so there is basically nothing for me to say. I do however, read everything you write. In short, I'm aware of the light and shadow upgrades to quake.

I'm not too good to help. I can't really do brushwork for you because I have a lot of other stuff to do. Also, mappers are generally expected to build their map themselves unless they're a total beginner asking for help or it's a chainmap type thing. It really should be obvious.

If it's feedback that you want, I'm sure you will get it from myself and others here.

I don't think there was any war, and yeah, I guess the thread was auto-locked because of age.

It was obvious. I was trying not to assume so, I simply asked.

                Hi

The map looked quite promising from what I could see. I like the random "broken" feel of some of the scenery. There's a couple of talented Players/Mappers from europe called Xeno and Stalker who both indivudually often use a similar technique on some of their maps and personally I think it adds to the experience. It seems in keeping with the overall atmosphere of Quake. This is just my humble opinion of course
Unfortunately I can't offer any advice concerning radiant but if you need someone to test play it, etc let me know. If you want someone with a really keen and experienced eye for Quake maps to test it you might consider talking nicely to Peg to see if he can spare a little time to run through it for you.

                Kind regards

I haven't visited or thought of this thread in a while. It is still a desire of mine to finish this map. Next Sunday I'm going to load this map up, switch my tools to tyrutils and take a stab at moving it closer to completion. I've reread this entire thread and I'm going to keep in mind much of the advice posted here.

So, I decided to go find this map and get all set up so when I am ready I can just roll. Only problem is, I can't find the latest version of this map. What I did find (and find out), due to a search for .map on my computer, is that I have 168 uncompleted maps. I know what you are thinking (maybe) "How much of that is just test junk?". Well, I thought a whole lot of it would be test junk but I kept opening up maps that are not junk. I went through probably 30 or 40 maps to see what they are and only like 5 were test junk. That doesn't mean the 120ish that I didn't get to aren't all junk but even if they are... 30+ unfinished maps!!! That's a FEW games of maps.

I found some really cool stuff. I tried to remake e1m1 (same layout and access but very different brushwork), I built some crazy fortress that is actually pretty good. I built sort of an island ruin that is also pretty good... there is more and more. I can't even remember everything I just looked at. Oh I built a kung fu set. I remember this one. I picked an old old kung fu movie with cool sets, paused it and mapped right off the movie still but with quake textures.

One thing I have come to realize in looking at all my maps this way. I must loooove arches, columns and prison bars, cause they show up in everything I make. Hold up, Imma get a screenshot of my e1m1 remake....

back. Here's some of my e1m1 shots

Not too shabby right? I did more than the first room but, it's all screwed up outside (explanation at bottom of this page)

Here are some shots from my ruin

Well, I guess that isn't really a ruin but, whatever. Right now all these maps are a little borked cause I recompiled them with tyrutils but I have a bunch of build settings that these maps didn't originally have. Thats why the 3rd "ruin" pic looks so black. There was never supposed to be sunlight (or maybe not the sunlight I have my build menu using). Currently outside of my e1m1 remake everything is black for the same reason. That's why I didn't take screenshots of it.

well I like your re-designed e1m1 map, it looks like some sort of a server room lol

but yet it has a calm tranquility about it and nice soft darker lightning (than the original), it'd be cool if you post the rest of it

Id actually be interested in that kung fu map you made because I would like to practice navigating or perhaps fighting in it lol if you ever get on a quake server and actually play make that a quake fu fight hehe

actually this brings me to another idea. I propose a test server, where users have access to directly upload maps and play them in real time afterwards, I think that would be real dandyy

so yea post your maps plz

@post map - I was thinking about getting all the decent unfinished stuff together, recompiling it with tyrutils and different settings that actually go with each map and releasing the bsp and map files in one big zip. This is going to take time. The compiling of my maps is pretty quick but going over each map and figuring out what compile settings to use is not going to be quick.

If I do this (probably will), I will also have to upload my exact radiant setup (it's portable anyway) cause it is NEVER as simple as opening my map up in an editor. There are numerous wads, paths, compilers, build_menus, .ent and yadda yaddas that need to be used/considered. I can make the whole thing drop and go but it is not gonna happen in a day or 2. I probably wont even begin til sunday.

I'm not going to upload the maps under their current condition cause I make a lot of outside stuff and my outside stuff is half black due to a very low sun that isn't supposed to be there.

@QungFu - my map looks like a kung fu set but, there is no code written for kung fu. I started the map a while back cause I was going to tempt phenom to get back on the QungFu project, and because I love Chinese architecture and kung-fu. I didn't post pics cause for some reason it is fullbright. All of the drama in the set is gone. I didn't feel like figuring out why there are no lights so I cached it for now.

oh ok.. Im not really sure what you're talking about in some areas as Im not very techy but Im good at playing lol

the most i know is , type in console map "map name", so it goes to it. so put your maps here as .bsb's I suppose

when I said upload your maps, I didnt mean all of them at once, it does seem like a lot of work over a short period of time. I meant, possibly a few that you have around and are completed

the sunny parts of maps, thats a new idea that Ive not heard before. The most sun we got in quake is on dm3 outside area, at pent, but that'd be real cool - I mean, some sunny areas and shades too.. it creates a more realistic effect on a map

I also had some idea but Im not sure if it can actually be done in Quake. Regarding the kungfu set map, it is smashable walls, is it ever possible to have a section of a wall take damage over time, like an enemy, and up to a certain amount of hitpoints just crumble?

I think that would be real cool, that idea came to me when thinking of this kungfu set map and remembering that in mortal kombat, upon certain arenas an uppercut would send the opponent flying through the roof into a different room lol
The gemstone of gaming is Quake, so load it up and play some

@I meant, possibly a few that you have around and are completed - ohhhh you want me to upload completed maps. Done. All my completed maps are linked below.

                            re:....is that I have 168 uncompleted maps.

It may be more accurate to say that I have 30+ incompleted maps and 120ish other files with a .map extension. Who knows what's in the other 120... prefabs, junk, more Incompleted maps?

The last 4 images in my last post with images are a map named iiwii (it is what it is). I'm messing around with it right now trying to get the light and dirt halfway decent. I believe this map has promise. There are a lot of little ways to go and from ost places in the map you can see other spots in the map which aren't even on the same level you are on. I don't think I'm gonna worry about being the next sock or gb with this (or even attempt it). I think I'm just gonna finish the map and that's that. It will be a very small map, maybe 50 monsters (a quickie) but, at least I can throw my hat in the ring as someone that made a map. There are a few ways that my map is a bit different from what you guys expect. I think people will like it for what it is.

I think I'm going to release what I have as like a spoiler, tonight. I just want to work on the light a little more first. There is nothing to do do but walk around but the environment is interesting.

Well, I guess it isn't really happening "tonight". I just spent like an hour and a half trying to figure out why all of my sunlight disappeared. I figured out how to fix it but I have no idea why it happened. The fix was to select all my sky brushes and reassign the sky texture (whacky). Sigh, so much wasted time and I have no idea how my sky became "corrupted". I got my sun back but the lights in my map look like shit and I'm going to bed.
