      • looked up pics of medieval hinges, and found this design which i quite liked


        so then i tried making some fancy looking hinges for the back-side inspired by those


        .

        hmm, looking at it and then seeing the pic of lock-part...
        i might also add the top-part of the hinge to the lock-part at front
        .

        • Looks superb!

          super picky and anal: the arc for your lid is slightly tighter than the arc for the edge. I seriously doubt this matters. I'm just noticing things...

          I don't know how detailed you want to go but, this image looks like a really cool decorative hasp to me. I don't think you are stupid but, if you don't know what a hasp is, it's where you put the lock. I've said "hasp" many times before and was met with "what is that" (by other people). That's the only reason I'm telling you.

              • lastly i think ill redo the lock itself, it kinda looks way to modern for the chest

                looked up pics of medieval locks through google,
                and it would seem these two styles were most common medieval locks

                the first one i dun like and wouldnt be fitting for a chest, so i then searched for pics of the second style

                .

                after a lil bit i came across this particular one which i thought looked nice and would be fitting

                • Naaaah, hasp is too small and rinky-dink looking for the rest of the chest. It looks like I could smack it off with one hammer blow. I know you made it like that because it has to fit the trim, but the rest of the chest looks really bulky and tough in comparison.

                  Maybe if you made the hasp an extension of the trim for that part and enlarged it. Bigger lock too. Medieval stuff wasn't very compact. I think the hasp/lock combo should be closer to the size of the handles.

                  Just my opinion (even if I sounded more like a manager - I'm just writing fast and short)

                  • yeah its that small cuz it has to fit the trim, in the original texture they didnt keep stuff like that in mind at all, and the lock isnt even anywhere near the trim at all

                    also, made a lock based on that pic:


                    and yeah, ill def have a look into making the trim bigger so that i can also make the hasp bigger

                    • thickened the rim and made the whole hasp+lock part 130% of what they were


                      and also did the same to the hinges on the back, scaling them up to 130%

                      • It does look better but I realize now what is weird. You are using the bat as the "flap". Which means you are trying to focus too much detail into a very small part. It's also creating disporpotionale poblems. For instance if that was a real hasp, lock or not, you would never be able to open it without unscrewing it and sliding the entire thing off the "lock loop". The bat part should probably be more like the largest (lower half) semi-circle in the below image and have another flap that comes from the hinge which overlaps it. It would cover the bat head, but that is already such a minute detail it probably would have never been noticed anyway. Maybe even slice off the head and flush the slice with the straight edge of the trunk. YOu would still have the wings and it would allow you to make it even bigger without sticking the "lock loop" on the bat head to compensate...

                        Doing it this way would also allow you to make the bat part of the trim, like as if the trim has this whole extra decorative chunk forged into it... this is really hard to explain

                        • yeah, using the bat itself as the flap is prolly indeed what caused all these issues

                          its a good idea indeed to make the bat be part of the trim itself and add a flap which goes over the bat instead, ill do that soon

                          • I decided to make breakfast and since programming with one hand is a waste of time, I chose to use my free hand to draw an example for you. As it turns out, drawing and eating breakfast isn't so easy either - that's why this looks like shit, BUT it does make visual what I was trying to say in my last post. Notice the bat technically IS some trim. Ignore the two really light grey lines at the top of the wings that cut the trim - that was just poor editing on my part. I gave myself til I finished a sausage egg and cheese on sourdough sandwich to finish this...I'm a dude and that's like 7 bites or something.

                              • oooh and what if the other end of the hinge (not shown in my example) was the bat head. Now, that might be pretty spiffy. Head-flap combo overlapping the body...me likey likey...LOL!

                                Anyway, I gotta split... I'll check back up here late tonight before I sleep.
