drake power-ups HD

  • decided to do the mirv-launcher next

    this is what i got after some playing around in blender

    dunno yet if ill continue this, or just start over and base it on any real rocket-launcher

    .

    also, could use some help from all of you on this:
    i was looking a bit at the mirv-launcher, trying to decide wether or not it might be (partially) based on any real rocket-launchers?


    i dunno much about rocket-launchers at all, so i used google image search to search simply for 'rocket launcher'
    this one came up, which i think might partially have been inspiration for it perhaps? (at least the basic pipe-like design)



    i know i have have seen rocket-launchers before which had that square sight thingamajig on it like the mirv-launcher has....
    anybody have any idea what that sight is called, and perhaps is able to provide pictures of a sight like that?

    or anybody have a better idea what might have been the inspiration for the mirv-launcher?
    if you know of ones with parts those are good too, i assume the mirv-launcher is most likely a mix of parts
    .

    • while i was just looking at the mirv-launcher again in blender, i noticed it seemed to have quite a bunch of parts with bad texture-alignments or stretched textures

      decided to go ahead and 'debug' the weapon, fixing the models' UV-mapping so the textures do line up properly everywhere,
      and so that theres no more ugly stretched brown mess on front of weapon, nor on top of sight-attachpoint anymore



      I 'debugged' both the hud- and ground-models
      thought that some people who prefer the original low-poly models might like to have this weapon debugged to fix the stretching and misalignment of textures

      GET DEBUGGED MIRV-LAUNCHER HERE

      .

      they are MDLs, so they can be used with any engine
      to use with any other engines, just unpack the pk3 with winrar or winzip or such
      .

      • just did some work on the square sights-thingy

        rounded the corners and added those inwards-pushed squares to it

        was thinking to mebbe have a flat face inside it which has transparency and has green text and a lil crosshair in center,
        something kinda like this, but then only the lines and text

        and make it seem like it has something like a scanner inside it,
        and have text on it so it looks like theres data about whats aimed at on it at right side and that thats what the sights are for

        that, or mebbe only a crosshair on it

        .


        also, i decided to roll with the original design and add details to it,
        like making the handle look more detailed and adding trigger and such

                I absolutely love love loooooooooooooove the drake mod,
                and totally wanna help make it even more epic then it already is with fancy HD models and textures and such <3

                and most of the models of the drake mod are quite basic models, which are within my ability to make with my beginners-skills in blender.
                also, making all these models makes for super practice in modelling.
                ive learned a lot of techniques and tricks and gained a lot of experience in modelling and UV-mapping and animating and such along the way
                with each model i make i learn new things about modelling i didnt know, and my skills improved with each modelling session i did.

                when i started i wouldnt have been able to make that fancy chest,
                but while making all these models ive learned what i needed to be able to make something as fancy as the chest

                i will also be applying some new things with this model that ive found,
                which are tutorials on shadow-mapping and ambient-occlusion -mapping from within blender which'll add a lot of realism to shading on my models,
                and which will automize the process of shading cuz blender will calculate the shading for me.

                .

                also, just yesterday i found a superb tutorial which shows how to rig and animate a bow using armatures and bones,
                which gives a real great realistic result while being relatively easy to do

                and the tutorial included blend files of start and of finished bow with animation so i could see it and play around with it.
                for fun played around with the finished bow, trying to change the animation to match the crossbow to see if i understood how it worked,
                and tried exporting it for fun as md3 and dropped it in-game and it worked perfectly

                so after this one i will be doing the crossbow or 'Buriza-do Kyanon' as its called in drake, and will be using the tutorial from that clip to animate it

                also, another lil' update:

                UV-mapped the pipe and sights, and i increased the thickness of the pipe a lil bit since it felt a bit thin

                • another lil 'update'... sort of
                  while looking at pictures of real rocket-launchers through google, i noticed that most of them had 2 handles,
                  one halfway which had trigger, and another one at front to hold it with other hand.
                  and i noticed that the mirv-launcher on the other hand only had one.

                  i then looked at pictures of rocket-launchers with only a single handle,
                  but those all had the handle placed more towards front instead of at back of the pipe, which mirv-launcher has

                  thought about it for a bit, and came to the conclusion that the mirv-launcher looks like it would be a 2handed rocket-launcher, like this one

                  which means the original model is missing the front-handle.

                  and thus, i decided to add a second thinner and slightly less long handle at front


                  good idea, yes or no? what do you all think?
                  its a seperate model, so i could easily just remove it again

                  • just for fun joined all parts into one model and let blender do smart UV-mapping for it and bake an AO-map which i used as texture,
                    just so i could export it and drop it in DP to see how it would look in-game

                    looks great right, but.... guess we gonna need an arm to hold that front-handle eh?

                    mebbe i could modify the arm from the shamblers castle axe for it

                        • tried adding the arm from shamblers castle axe to the mirv-launcher and make it look like its holding the front-handle

                          played around a bit with adjusting angle and size a bunch of times till i found what seemed ok.

                          what do you all think of it? is the angle and size of arm good like this?

                          • to me the arm looks a little wonkie... it just dose not look natural. but it looks better then with out the arm at all... i say keep playing around with it...

                            as far as the cross hair in side the box can you offer the model with and with out. i always use the cross hair when i play and it may look funky if you add in one to the model.

                            also have you ever played fantasy quake it uses a normal bow and arrow so sometime if you could set it up a replacement for that with the bow you have that would be cool!

                              what about the arm makes it look 'wonky' to you? and how would you suggest to adjust it?
                              rotate it? and in which direction? or adjust scale?

                              any suggestions for how to make it look more natural?

                              also if course about the crosshair, i did plan to do that,
                              that if i added a crosshair to the sights that id make a version with and one without

                              .

                              fantasy quake? you mean the 'future VS fantasy' mod?
                              if so, no ive never actually played that mod myself

                              • try to make the hand look like the middle set of nuckels points towards the target i guess...

                                i like the mod but the maps are not all that... but i like fighting the crossbow guys... the bow and arrow set up in it is messed up the arrow is on the wrong side of the bow but still better than what i can do
