  • Any update on the progress of RTLights?

Love playing through some of the maps with the HD textures but with no RT lights they look a little odd

They're coming, sooner than may you think Anyway I've restricted the number of maps/episodes: too big stuff will have no RTlights, too much FPS drop. Anyway name some maps/episodes you are intersted, if I have them I can send you via PM the prerelease version

      • Hi BV,

        Thanks for your reply!

Well - anything really. Beyond belief? Any of the retro/mapjams ?

        I'd be honored. Thanks!

        • Beyond Belief sure, just finished the new ones, I'll drop you a PM now. About the retro mapjams those maps are too huge and will really slow your FPS count, but they have colored lights, I think the only doable of those maps is the retrojam1.

            • Hi BV,

Thanks for sending me the Beyond Belief Rtlights! Looking forward to trying them out (i'm at work right now).

I am curious about one thing - the recommended lightmaps setting of 0.5.

Usually I play with lightmaps off completely - as I thought the purpose of RTlights was to avoid the old style of lighting (lightmaps). Would it be too dark with lightmaps on 0?

I also play with r_shadow_bouncegrid enabled and r_hdr_irisadaption enabled as well. So perhaps they won't be too dark

I would be interested in the Mexx9 RTlights (probably my favorite map series of all time), the IKSPQ and Shadow over innsmouth.

Looking forward to trying out the Beyond Belief RTlights!

              Thanks again!

Yeah they would be too dark and much more lights (and more fps drop of course, vanilla Quake maps are greatly smaller compared to custom maps that were released later)

                • What are "r_shadow_bouncegrid enabled and r_hdr_irisadaption" and how to enable them. Anyway Bbelief can be played also with lightmaps to 0.100, very dark but visibile while with lightmaps totally off you don't see nothing in certain areas (only black)

                  • Bouncegrid is a lighting technique that LH has added recently similar to global illumination in more modern games.

Basically light sources emit invisible light "particles" and those particles bounce and scatter off of surfaces, imitating how light bounces in real life. At least that's my understanding of it.

I think it works well in certain maps, in others it can look quite overblown. It helps to lighten up certain areas that are pitch-black or too black.

Iris adaptation adjusts the r_hdr_scenebrightness cvar dynamically depending on brightness levels within a certain radius of the player's viewpoint. It works pretty well and helps to brighten areas that are a little too dark or dim areas that are too bright.

Just set r_hdr_irisadaption 1 in console and r_shadow_bouncegrid as well. Bouncegrid has an intensity setting (the default is 4, i lowered it to 2) as well. I'm using the latest autobuild of DP if that matters. I know LH has done some work recently on bouncegrid.

The RTlights made for the id1 maps work rather well with lightmaps off - but as you have said they're much smaller than newer custom maps. I thought the main reason for rtlights was to improve performance drastically and improve looks as well. I have a 980Ti graphics card and by far the performance killers for me are reflections/pretty water (especially reflections coupled with reliefmapping). With r_water disabled most maps run fairly smooth even without RTlights files. I could only imagine it would be better with RTlights

EDIT: not that i don't like my Quake dark this is Missbubbles well of lost souls map :

Just checked with latest stable Darkplaces build while doing new Soul of Evil RTlights......I've noticed a HUGE improvement in performance and almost no fps drop even with 400+ lights (and with high resolution, anisotropic filter on and dp pretty water) while sometimes maps with 150+ lights gave me troubles. If this applies also to the other maps I'm working can open the doors to many interesting things....

                            • Nice! Yeah that's about how it should perform with RTLights files.

Just tried out the Beyond belief RTlights, love them. Most areas are really well done

If you wanna send me the mexx9 rtlights as well i'd love to try them out. Mexx9 is by far my favorite series and i'd love to play em through again in HD glory.

                              Thanks.!
