I hope this is the right place to ask for help on Doom?? I just managed to finally download the nashgore mod for Doom. I don't know where to put the wad file in my Doomsday folder to make it work. Can someone help and ignore my ignorance. I've tried it in several places with no luck.

Quake will always be my favorite.
DooM will always hold a spot for me though. It was a longtime favorite and still has my favorite enemy - CyberDemon (DooM 1/2 version only, not 3).
The issue for DooM in modern aspects is the lack of the basic features like jump and all. Yes engines added it, but it then breaks the level designs as you can jump over or onto things you couldn't - making the need to get a keycard void.
DooM 3 did the right idea for style. It's how DooM was intended to look. Sadly they changed too much. The enemies were not recognizable or were completely different and even absent too and then they made it more of a survival horror. DooM was that BUT it was always fast paced and action fueled - they slowed the gameplay down ALOT.

Speaking of which, can anybody recommend a relatively decent, sane and faithful source port? Most of the ones I've seen appear to be about adding MD2s, moving skies, looking up and down, a console and other crap to the game. I don't mind the occasional graphical whee-gee so long as it's not obviously out of place, but I would like to be able to play it again much the same way as I remember it from first time around.IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/

Hello MH,
please look into this thread.
Spinvis is the right person to ask I guess.
Doom has as far as I know, the greatest number of enhanced engines.
They are all listed in this thread.
It is like with Quake:
One port is ideal for multiplayer, while the other is best for single player with new features as you described.
That beeing said, I still want to suggest Doomsday because of its multiplatform support.
With almost every OS you can play it.
And dont forget: The fact, that this engine CAN support external files,
it doesnt mean you HAVE to use them.
You can still play Doomsday without any external file.
Only your .wad file is necessary.
You can then choose in the in-game menu the old play style.
You should try it. The feeling is then almost as it was back when we were young
So just like your wonderful DirectQ engine for Quake.
Hope I could help you a bit.
Kind regards,
Seven

ZDoom works, but:- comes with it's own PK3 file; won't run without it.
- fmod DLL required for sounds.
- Crap decals (and how to turn them off is not easily discoverable).
- A lot of gameplay-changing and original behaviour changing stuff is enabled by default.
Guess what I really want is something that's more like the FitzQuake of Doom ports. Basic, ultra faithful, no additional crap or baggage (and definitely no additional files needed - neither content nor DLLs - just the engine.)Last edited by MH; 04-26-2011, 03:51 PM.IT LIVES! http://directq.blogspot.com/

So, has anyone played any of the original (Ultimate, 2, and Final) DooM lately?
After playing a good amount of TF2, I'm much more calm when playing the fast-paced DooM, in control.
Currently on map Nirvana (21) of DooM 2 on nightmare. Some tough stuff.Who would win: a death knight, or a gremlin with a double-barrel?

Plus, I like how BooM adds different colors to the hud icons. You can only look at the slate-gray background template and the blood-red icons and text for so long.Who would win: a death knight, or a gremlin with a double-barrel?
