NewDM: A new look at Quake Deathmatch

  • Now I know I'm totally ripping off TF2 with this idea that I didn't come up with but it's awesome anyways and I don't mind trying it sometime.

    FFA DM:
    When the match ends, the server announces who won the match. This person instantly gets Quad Damage. Everyone else will lose their ability to attack forcing them to run away from the winner. Respawning is disabled during this time. After 10 seconds of that, the scoreboard will be forced for default intermission time, requiring someone to hit jump or attack to go to the next map.

    TDM:
    Same rules as above except it's the entire team that gets QUAD and it's the opposing team that loses their weapons. The winning team can't harm each other.

    Tie in FFA DM:
    The tied winners get QUAD but can't harm each other.

    Tie in TDM:
    Everyone loses their weapons because they're all LOSERS!!!

    This is just a fun idea I want to try out sometime. I'll have time to code after the 3 weeks of January.

      Rewarding the victor is one thing, rewarding them after the game is officially over is just silly, and making the losers helpless is even more silly.

        LordHavoc, lots of people find it annoying that the projectiles come from the center of the screen instead of the bottom. Would it be possible to set another sv_gamefix option to make everyone happy? Let me know your thoughts.

          What do you mean by center of the screen? I've never seen what you're talking about. Please explain, or show screenshots/video.

            Maybe this explains it better.

            To all honesty this is an issue I don't find bothers me one bit but if it pleases the majority..

            I have a darkplaces wishlist on the first post of this thread:

            * non-dp client disconnect fix [I think this was solved already ]
            * the ability to mask ips (C*S request)
            * item pickup updates in realtime [I'm not sure if this is still an issue]

              And that is optional, sv_gameplayfix_delayprojectiles 0 will restore the Quake behavior that looked bad (rockets materializing several feet infront of you), either way the projectile sits in one spot for 50ms before moving (Quake protocol limitations).

              Clientside QuakeC in mods can make a projectile appear at the gun and begin moving immediately (by using their own protocol that adds velocity).

              DarkPlaces betas currently default to 72fps (sys_ticrate 0.0138889) matching QuakeWorld, which makes this problem imperceptible regardless of the value of that cvar. (The DP7 protocol rate limiting takes care of the potential overload inherent in 72fps operation)

              Worth noting also that running any Quake server at 72fps gives the QW physics (I.E. bunnyhopping with good air control, higher jumps, rocket-climbing walls), evidently the only actual physics change in QW was that getting out of water is easier, the rest is entirely framerate.

              Note that DP could very easily rate limit non-DP7 protocols but doesn't currently (will change that).

                • the projectile appearance thing made it, for me, unplayable. it felt like quakeworld; i really had absolutely no idea where my rockets were going--thats also the reason i dont play quakeworld. i understand you might have been trying to improve quake, but i think this is one area where it will resist improvement

                    I saw you on the server for like 1-2 minutes then you left. It must have really traumatized you.

                    I'd like to get everyone's opinion on the how the server handles your BestWeapon on weapon pickup. Now that the SSG and SNG are just as awesome, I find it's a little frustrating that when I kill Rocketguy point blank with the SSG while he has the RL, I pick up his RL right when I kill him and shoot a rocket at the wall all in that moment because my trigger finger hasn't come off +attack yet.

                    Do you think I should get rid of server weapon switching, modify it to only switch your current weapon if you're holding axe, sg, or ng, or leave it alone?

                      don't give me lip. you asked me to come on the server and give feedback so i did, even though i was busy doing other things at the time. frankly i thought i was doing you a favor. if you don't want honest feedback, then don't ask for it

                      • What I'm asking in feedback is for people to play for around 30 minutes so they can understand how the mod is different from vanilla DM and other mods, then post their thoughts on the it. You can really only experience the mod as it should if you're DMing against other people. You came on to say hi and a few other things then left. So please play at the server for a longer time then post feedback again. I never said I wasn't taking your feedback into account.

                          We need a NewDM! To me, Clan Arena, Team Deathmatch, Rocket Arena and RuneQuake don't cover all the types of play I like.

                          We don't have an FFA deathmatch that focuses on ammo management like NewDM did. I really liked being constantly challenged on the ammo side of things.

                          It felt like having ammo was a bonus because it was so hard to accumulate; it really made having a couple of rockets special, instead of standard Quake where on some E4Mx map you might have 80 of them rather quickly.

                          No other mod made having 5 rockets feel like it was time to kick some ass!

                            Do note that there are some parts in items.qc, player.qc, and weapons.qc that I did not comment changes on. I look back on it now with regret.

                              nj1 and chi1 aren't on the front page.

                              /I really wish Solecord could make it so servers with >1 players automatically are displayed on the front page.

                                edit: Ya I know of two of those servers but I've never seen a TEAM DM going on. Mostly just FFA. Of course I'd love to be proven wrong by someone showing me a server with a TDM I can join in on
