However, the 2.7GB version that I tried first takes forever to load up when entering a new map, or changing options, so I ended up downgrading to the 900MB pack which works beautifully.
One thing that would be nice for GNU+Linux users would be a tar.bz2 file with the textures hardlinked so that there's no wasted hard disk space (for all the duplicate textures). It's a shame that all the space must be wasted. Another possibility for releasing a smaller one would be using an ISO, as that supports the equivalent to hardlinks, and then people can unpack it with RAR or using something like DaemonTools/Linux-loopback.
There's only a couple textures from the pack which I don't like, one of them was already mentioned, the "alien-looking" face on the wall. It is much too tall of a face, and doesn't look demonic-bullhorns like the original. Overall it is a wonderful pack, and I can't imagine playing Quake without it now! I've tried going back to the original Quake textures a few times, to be able to remember what they look like and am blown away with how blurry they are! Heh.
