        I hate to say it but these days Quake multiplayer is strictly a preference for action DM-fans who specifically are masters with the Q1 rocket launcher and ultra-powered lightninggun and supernailgun;
Even in its own field, it's up against Deathmatch Classic (the exact same game only on the Half-Life 1 engine), Quake 3 Arena (which is more balanced and DM oriented version of Quake 1's MP) and Team Fortress 2 (which is basically a hyper-balanced Team Fortress 1- and also free).

Well, the best way is to make others aware as you know. I did so by making my QUAKEPC Website
Home - QUAKE GAME SITE for Everyone Quake 1-Quake 2-Quake 3 Arena Game Site This didn't happen overnight & I update the site as much as possible. I have had a GREAT Success on using My Quake YouTube Videos and their Descriptions for Advertisement. I use a Site Tracker and it seems from that and my members are mainly "Old Schoolers". People from when they were a kid or young adults came back looking for quake. Also introducing people to Quake helps too. I set up a server on my laptop and invite others to DM. I get hits and traffic every hour of the day and night. Odd enough form ALL over this wonderful world too.
          Turkey,Poland,South America,Germany,Japan,India etc

I do have a good percentage that are teenagers too! Theres nothing better than Dm on Quake 1 2-3 a.m. on Work nights. You also have to keep people form getting bored too! Taking a DOS version of Quake and throwing that game into DarkPlaces (One Word?) Engine brings New Life to the game. There are THOUSANDS of Add-ons and Mods that Players should know about.
ALso still some people cant go and run most new games either. QUAKE becomes a man's best friend when they own a 500mhz PC.

          Well- this should help.

          Keep Fragging!

i honestly don't think there would be much if any success trying to attract "new" players (people who've NEVER played quake1), i think the newer generation of gamers is a lot of different and would probably see a lot of gameplay quirks that us old school quakers appreciate so much as being 'flaws' and what not, not to mention the graphics

granted, i've seen the odd player here and there who seems to be completely new and i'm always floored to see that someone who never heard of quake all of a sudden picked up in 2011 and managed to get into the online aspect anyways.

i think the most success would be trying to attract some old/ex-quakers to come by once in a while. IMO quakers sort of play in cycles, and we often disappear for months/years at a time but a lot of seem to always come back or just pop in once a while, i think if we could increase the amount of those infrequent players then the community would seem more lively.

another option would be trying to attract some of the north american players (altho theres only very few of them) from quakeworld to move over to netquake

You've got an illegal download on that site. Pirating Quake is uncool. It may be an old game but it's still illegal.

it is only the items and such in the levels NO MONSTERS? levels running on FUHQuake? I checked it out and there's no monsters.

I could be wrong could someone double check? I don't want to remove it if its legit, that would be ignorant, wrong and uncool.

There is nothing one can do to increase the interest in this game. Let it burn mother fuckers, let it BURN...

It's not about increasing interest, but to get back some of the older players..

For about 2-3 months we were able to get back a bunch of old CTF'ers for a weekly Sunday night matchup.. it started expanding to almost every day playing for a while until eventually it dissipated

Welcome back Auf. It's good to see more players from the god old days returning. You will find most of the northern european players at bigfoot.quake1.net or any of the flanders servers. I'm pretty sure that there are a number of regular players there whom I believe are Swedes (confused?, Bigfoot?, BloodyMary?) along with the old faithfull crew such as Peg, Polarite, Jer, and Sir Henry (many of whom speak multiple languages).

Don't forget there is an FFA tournament coming up which may also attract more players and the breaks in between matches may be a good place to find swedish players for your LAN

                            Hope this helps

I've seen people get Quake 1 for the first time in 2011 thanks to Steam sales. Almost all of them just play SP, but they do like it. I think some more emphasis on custom SP maps and adjustable MP bots on the site would attract such people. Thinks like Youtube "tips and tricks" videos for popular Quake 1 SP mapsets, along with a video or two demonstrating how to make bots work and adjusting them to your skill level, would likely help attract more people.
